Wait... You can kill Pope and Young animals in blue jeans?  :dunno:

Way to go. Beautiful buck!

New archery equipment is amazing. I love up and close but when you make a great shot on an animal at 60 plus it is very cool.  :archery_smiley:

WOW!  Freekin' monster!  You look unhappy, like the big one walked out just after you shot this guy.  Perhaps just because the season is over so quick.

What's next on your list?  Slay a dragon?

I don't know? it is a nice buck but I'm calling *censored* on the 90yd frontal shot and if you choose to shoot it that far and facing you, you deserve to have your bow taken from you and beaten with it.

What is with calling the guy out on his shot.  What is ethical for you and your skills is not necessarily ethical for another hunter.  Obviously, by the damage and the blood and yardage after the kill, it was ethical.  Proof is in the shot and how quickly the animal died.  Jeez, it is a great deer and a hell of a shot.  This is no different than long range shots with rifles.  I would never dream of a shot over 300 yards, I am not comfortable, nor do I practice enough for that shot, but there are plenty of hunters that make shots way past that. :dunno:

Very nice buck, congrats. You posted the distance you chose to shoot on a public forum so responses are quid pro quo I figure.  You ranged that animal at 90 yards and decided to take a high odds chance at wounding him?  Ridiculous. You were very, very lucky, plain and simple to put an arrow in a softball size kill zone at that distance.

When u group a paper plate at 90 yards then maybe u could do it... U just need some practice I guess
Or u just live in the city and can't shoot that far in ur back yard if u have one  :chuckle:

Most QB's shouldn't throw back across the field off of their back foot......the really good ones do it when they need to and they make plays. This guy obviously felt comfortable doing something that the average guy SHOULDN't! Maybe he's not average!

No, I have never lived in a city and do not now. Sure, I practice out to 60 yards for the possibility of an opportunistic second shot on my property in the country. I'm sure you are "very" aware of what can and oftentimes happens while an arrow is in flight at even 40 or less yards to a previously stationary big game animal.  Hitting a paper plate at 40 or even 90 yards does not guarantee success every time on a hunt.  After nearly 40 years of bow hunting, I know this. Big game critters seemingly decide to take a step, flinch, or whatever many times right at the second we touch off an arrow. Long range shooting is risky to say the least. Those who think otherwise more than likely, wound more than they care to admit. I'm not that hungry that I'm willing to take those chances. Just my old Hunter thoughts. Again, congrats on a very nice buck.

You won't be able to tell this kid anything, Phantom. He knows everything.  I call that a lucky shot. You can hit a paper plate at 90 yards. Great.  You can't reliably hit a potentially moving target at 90 yards. Who knows what that deer's  going to do in the time it takes that arrow to reach its target. If you're going to shoot that far you should just use a rifle.

Well thx for ur opinion my father has also been hunting for 40 years and he shot his buck last year at 93 yards... And he used to hunt instinctive recurve just like me... His last bow was bill Stuart's last bowever made that he named the deerslayer for my dad.. As time change so does technology and the capability of shooting farther distances if u don't like that I'm sorry.. and huntnnw i dont care about ur opinion at all lol...

You can talk whatever crap u want but all it does is make u look jealous... truth is 10% of the hunters on here kill 90% of the animals and u fall in the 90% that kill the 10% so hate all you want please.. Makes me feel even better about myself  :dunno: :chuckle:  :IBCOOL:

Don't have a samurai... And we four wheeled out to it...
How far did you for wheel out to it?  About 90 yards?   :chuckle:

I think this applies

"Ability and ethics should go hand in hand. Even when you are confident of your ability at a given range, extenuating circumstances should always take priority. When cross winds, an animal quartering away too much, or branches in the flight path cause concern, the ethical bowhunter will let down unless a quick, clean kill is certain."

I do find it kind of funny that when people say they practice with a rifle at 1000 yards and take a long shot on something, that it was okay because they practiced, but the same conversation for archery renders a person foolish.

Say what you want about a 1000 yard rifle shot, but NOBODY knows what the wind is doing between here and your target, you can only guess.  Even a 0.5 MOA rifle shoots a 5" pattern at 1000 without the wind and any twitch of the shooter.

Most people let the rifle shooter off on the "practice" excuse.  Most seem not to on the archer.

For the record, I don't personally have a problem with it if you have confidence in your shot and the situation.  Especially if you seem to have good luck with it year after year.  I'd say the same thing if you had a long proven track record with the Texas heart shot.

Also, most of you must realize that you're pawns in BillDos online entertainment.  He's likely beating you at his own game that you're unknowingly participating in....  I think watching this I'm going to take my deer this year and rub blood on its butt and make the same claim from 80 yards just to watch the circus. :chuckle:

I have to agree with the group that is saying that they don't prefer the 90 yard shot, especially with a facing on shot. You made the shot and that is great, but for me personally, I have a set limit as far as distances go as well as animal positioning when taking the shot. I am confident out to 60 yards with my bow but will only take that shot in perfect conditions with a calm/unknowing animal so that I can take my time and settle in. As for straight on shot, again just for me, it would have to be 30 or under and again with almost perfect conditions. This all really has nothing to do with my abilities but more so just my belief that I would rather not take a shot then risk wounding an animal and not recovering it. I love hunting and killing an animal just as much as the next guy but also have a great deal of respect for what I am doing and set my ego aside while contemplating a shot. This is just my opinion so take it for what it is worth.

First off I want to say that is a really nice deer and a great shot.

I know Billdo likes the drama but here is what I think for the others that actually want to discuss ethics and effective range.

Everyone's ethics and effective range are different.  So you took a long shot, you hit what you were aiming at and made a clean kill.  Something can go wrong just as easily on a 25 yard shot.  We have had guys in our hunting party wound animals at 5 yards, it happens.  A new hunter with an effective range of 20 yards can still screw it up.

My guess is most on here would stretch their effective range if that buck was standing in front of them.  Maybe only 5 or 10 yards.  Whatever their effective range is or ethics say.  Maybe they are good out to 50 yards and the buck is at 56 they would still take the shot.

Anyways, ethics and effective range can be argued forever, everyone has a different opinion of each.

I am of the opinion that you shot a great deer and made an awesome shot, I wasn't in your shoes or blue jeans  :chuckle: so I don't know what I would have done.

I think the biggest thing is the facing on shot. 90 yards is a long shot in itself but there are guys who can make that shot and are confident. The margin for error is just so much smaller in the chest so I think that is what the grief is derived from.  :twocents:

Very nice buck, congrats. You posted the distance you chose to shoot on a public forum so responses are quid pro quo I figure.  You ranged that animal at 90 yards and decided to take a high odds chance at wounding him?  Ridiculous. You were very, very lucky, plain and simple to put an arrow in a softball size kill zone at that distance.
When u group a paper plate at 90 yards then maybe u could do it... U just need some practice I guess
Or u just live in the city and can't shoot that far in ur back yard if u have one  :chuckle:

:twocents:

Our camps last 5 elk have all been shot at 80 yards.  Clean pass through shots.   Killer shot and keep it up bud

What bow are you shooting and what grain arrow??
(NO WAY IN HELL IS A HUNTING WEIGHT ARROW SHOOTING 342FPS!

(For comparison, my 2015 Xpedition Xcentric is 356ibo. (One of the if not the fastest 6in brace bows on the market) and with my draw 29.5 and a loaded string and a 430grain arrow shoots right at 300fps. So unless your shooting WAY under the legal arrow weight or one of Kevin Strothers 130lb bows your full of *censored*!!!!!!!!

Now as for the shot at 90? Broadside un-alert deer I will take that shot all day long. Frontal obviously looking at you, nope. STUPID!

So I hear a lot of debate on how long you should shoot. I have my own comfort levels and stick to them. I know an archer can easily screw up a long shot with the smallest little error. But I also know an animal can jump the string up close causing for a bad shot too. So with that said bildo can I just have an honest answer since I know that you guys do take longer shots. how many animals you've lost in say the last 5 years bow hunting?
For me and keeping my shots under 40 in the field on deer I can say I have had one blacktail jump the string which I didn't recover years ago. Chip shot at 18 yards. In the field anything can happen. So that is my honest experience.

Perhaps maybe he is bending the truth to get underneath peoples skin. One thing is for sure Bildo has succeeded in finding drama. So what if he killed the buck at 90 yards and it was a frontal shot. That's his business.

I feel I made a valid point about close mishaps versus long mishaps. Close they can jump the string. Long they can take one step to feed or whatever causing a far back hit. All situations can be looked at differently.
I was just looking for a answer on success ratio versus failure to show people valid points.
Like me for example. I've shot at 4 deer. Lost one. Because it jumped the string at 18 yards. Close simple chip shot with a failure in the end.
Shot two elk. Got both.
I felt my question was a simple question that could be answered but appears not.
Congrats on the great animals you have harvested over the past few years.

Why is that? Cause I obviously know more about the BS your spilling then you do???
I could give a *censored* less about you killing the deer at 90 yards. Great on you. ALL I WANNA KNOW IS THE SPECS OF YOUR BOW AND ARROW. If you cant give us that how can anyone believe a damn thing you say???

MXracer532 why do you care about all that? He showed pics of the buck and told you how he did it. Don't you think that should be enough? Bottom line is he killed the buck. Who care about the rest, why do you need an explanation of the bow. All it would do is open this thread for more ridicule. I think his pics are enough.

If indeed a bow shoots that fast I'd love the specs on one to get one for myself. That's over 80fps faster than my hunting setup.

I shouldn't have to give u anything that's the best part... U can't believe another hunters story then constantly proves 90% of the people on this forum the only people that believe me are the 10% that kill 90% of the animals on this forum how ironic hahaha :chuckle:

When you make false claims that you cant back up makes people think everything you say is BS. I never said I didnt believe your story of your shot. Just tell the truth about the bow and the specs. Maybe you dont know???
Trust me im in that so called 10% and could careless that I am.

The garbage IS the point of the thread. The only reason Billdo ever posts anything is to troll. Period. He wants this circus.

The only issue that I have with this thread is the need to even say what the distance was.

And, here's why I care.  My son reads this stuff and he's a pretty good shot.  But, you fill his head with feats of grand archery shots and he's going to want to see if he can do it.  So, he'll move the target out to 90 yards.  He'll figure where he thinks the top of his leveling bubble puts him and that is probably about 80 yards and then just hold a bit higher.  And, after a few tries, he'll hit that target at 90 yards.  And, he'll probably be better off for practicing at 90 yards when that 90 yard opportunity comes along.

And, 90 yards is possible.  But, its more likely that he's going to miss in field conditions.  Or, worse, he's going to wound.

So, whether this is a troll post or not, doesn't really matter to me.  It was a dang nice buck and I wish that was all that needed to be said or talked about.  But, because of threads like this, there are going to be more people than should taking 90 yard shots this year.

You've made my job as a parent just a whee bit harder than it otherwise should of been.  Though you may not wound animals because of your superior skills, in your own little way, you may have caused a few animals to be wounded that would not have otherwise simply because you had to tell people that 90 yard center punch frontal shots are the way to get those big bucks.

So, whether you are trolling or telling the truth probably doesn't even matter.  I'll give you that threads like this can be entertaining.  Just understand that you may be doing harm by telling some archers that 90 yard shots on the big bucks is where its at.

Just something to think about.
