Title: Gun Safe, where to buy?
Post by: h20hunter on September 08, 2015, 03:21:33 PM
So, now that I have the space and a little cash I'm looking to buy a stand up big boy gun safe. I've been told to buy big and will pretty much go as big as I can afford/fit in the room via access points. I'm not to hung up on brand but will stick with known manufactures. The question is....where? Costco? Cabelas? Home Depot? I need delivery and transportation into the gun room. This is on the basement level so I've got plenty of support underneath it.

Sportsman's is another place to look.  You could have a BBQ and beerfest for HuntWa and probably get it moved down into you basement.

Northwest safe in Enumclaw. They have delivery and a bunch of safes on the show room floor including most of the bigger name brands. They also have their own brand that is a good deal cheaper than the big names and has all of the same specs. I picked up one of their 24 gun safes back in April and am happy with it.

If you want the best.....

http://www.nwsafe.com/

They will deliver and install anywhere you want it in the house. I had them deliver and install on 2nd level out at Granite...I think they charged something like $300 for delivery.

Also keep in mind, no sales tax on safes so you can bump it up a bit without hurting the wallet

Their website is pretty crappy and only shows the liberty line. I know they also carry Summit and Superior along with a few other brands. They also regularly have scratch and dent safes that you can get at a discounted price.

I bought mine at Del's Feed in Monroe. They matched pricing for me.. I got the Cannon 48 gun ($800), plenty of room for future procurement. I loaded it in my Dakota and the wife and I moved it up 4 steps, thru the house and into place. I used 2x4's and a 2" wooden dowel to roll it thru the yard and house. "picture Fred Flintstone"  :chuckle:

I just helped a friend get his upstairs. We used an appliance dolly. took 4 of us, but only 10 minutes.  :hello:

By some beer and have a BBQ, it'll get moved for ya.  :twocents:    Plenty of us in LS

Also, Costco is a good route, but their inventory is always changing.

I did something similar, but used a come-along to get it up and down the stairs.

What did you hook the comealong to? cross beam in a door frame?

Another thing...if you do drive down to Enumclaw, they will want pictures, the number of stairs, how wide the hallway and stairs are with and without handrails, dimensions of landings on top and bottom of stairs....thing's like that. Gather all of the information beforehand and safe yourself the headache that I went through.

I originally purchased the Fatboy and as soon as I got home and had all the information, they told me that they couldn't install it where I wanted to so I drove back down there to pick out a different safe that would make it up my stairs. Not a big deal but quite the drive for us north-enders....

Yep, put a 4x4 across a door frame and used some ropes to tie to a heavy piece of furniture to take some stress of the frame.

If you want the appearance and "feeling" of protection buy from any of the above mentioned vendors.

If you want a quality safe that offers actual security, get a Sturdy Safe.

After moving a gigantic safe for a neighbor(4 guys total) I decided to go with multiple medium sized safes.  I can move them myself, they aren't as likely to cause the floor to buckle, and the investment overall is not that much difference in $$$ if at all.  I bolt them down so it is highly unlikely they will be packed off. :twocents:

depends on what you want for quality and brand.. there are some very nice high end safes out there as well as junk.. have seen the videos of the tip over flat and pry bar the doors open, quite an eye opener regardless of most levels of quality. so my recommendation, regardless of the model is to lag it to the floor or wall to help prevent theft..

Last December I bought a Cabelas Signature series. when I'm throwing down that kind of money I like to be hands on and look at what I'm getting. Their Signature safes are made by Liberty which has EXCELENT customer service (I had no problems with the safe itself just the lights it came with). I bought REALLY big and had a 3rd party that Cabelas recommended install it. It cost a bit to install the new one, but I moved my old safe to a buddies house which according to my hernia meter was about 600lbs. the new one was almost twice that so there was no way I was gunna mess with moving that SOB (plus they bolted it down, ALWAYS bolt it down). I do recommend buying the WIRED light kit and a dehumidifier rod. the safe comes with battery lights which are pretty much worthless and eat batteries like tic tacs, and the dehumidifiers to protect your investments obviously. Any questions PM me. Happy Hunting!

gunsafes.com sells many of the different safes on the market.  They seem to have competitive prices and offer a lot of information about the different safes they sell.  They include free shipping as well.  They're Idaho based but I'm guessing everything is drop shipped from a distributor.

I can't emphasize this enough, do your research before you purchase a gun safe!  DO NOT go strictly off of price and brand name because nearly all of them have their less expensive line/s but it'll still have the same company name.  If you just want something to put your stuff in and lock the door, well, just about all of them will accomplish that.  BUT, if you want a safe that truly protects against fire or break ins/theft, you're going to have to step up and pay for that security.

I saw first hand what a fire can do to even the best gun safes.
safe was rated for 1600 degrees at 45 minutes.
A fellow member showed me his guns after his house burnt down, over a dozen pieces of steel is whats left. all the wood is toast. His family is safe & healthy, which is what matters.

FYI, I paid $1180 delivered for my Liberty Fatboy and installed into me secret, booby trapped area. North 40 in Omak was the dealer.

I went with a nice wood cabinet and good insurance. A determined thief will steal your stuff and fire will over take a safe but my insurance will cover all of it. I keep a thumb drive with pictures and serial numbers at my place and in another location.

I would recommend a safe man. These days most thieves are the smash a grab type, a wood cabinet isn't much of a deterrent...in fact its none at all. Same with people you just buy the metal gun cabinets that can be broken with tin snips.

Yes if someone REALLY wants your stuff they will find a way, anything made can be unmade. That doesn't mean make it easy for them, you still lock your cars and house up at night don't you?

And yes the insurance may cover your lost items, but what about the people that your guns will be used against?

not trying to bash you man but don't be so dismissive about keeping guns secured, the anti's love stuff like that.
