I can relate. When at my little brothers funeral in NC, His friends kept asking me if it was true that we would spend two weeks in the woods elk hunting, with no running water, a toilet, shower etc.. I said of course, it's what we do. We are hunters. They then looked at the photo logs that my brother kept of his experiences and the things that he saw, things that you can only see in the woods, and began to understand what his passion was about.Most states it is pretty hard to get away for more than most the day. Like a lot of the northeast, you can see through the 'woods' from one highway to the next.

I just got back from 9 days of bowhunting in Idaho. I hate when people at work as me where I am going - I just tell them that I am going backpacking and they say "oh, ok" approvingly. :chuckle:

I do the same thing with the new ones... then I ease them into the whole hunting thing. Every once in a while someone surprises me and is actually interested in hunting. :chuckle:

That's one reason why I thoroughly love being retired!!! I don't have to answer to anyone!!
Same with being in high school. I just have my dad call and say we'll be gone for a week. No questions asked. If we get something on the last day and I have to stay a little longer, mom calls and says I'm sick.

This year I turkey hunted a week, and will leave on the 30 th for muzzy elk ,come back on the 12 th. Leave again on 16 th Oct . Till 27 th.
All of it tent camping. This year breaking in my new canvas wall tent.
I tell folks all the time that the best sleep I get all year is on a mountain is in a tent.
My wife joined me last year for four days during deer. She doesn't hunt but had a ball holding down camp and relaxed.
Can't wait.

Good times in camp and the mountains are my reset button for all the stress and grind of my daily life. 9 days with the guys, hunting, laughing and making memories that I will never forget keep my young and looking forward to the next go-round. We got a bull tag in camp means it is fun for everyone. Love to cook and keep that table time after dark light and well fed so we can go all day doing what we love.

There is not a place I'd rather be than the elk woods, the more remote the better, in September. Many don't understand it but accept it with a mild curiosity.A breed apart.

1st person back at work always asks, catch anything? YupI get asked the same thing. I tell them I couldn't run as fast as the deer/elk so I killed it. :tup:
And when they ask me where I'm going on vacation I tell them I'm going hunting because after working with them for the past year I have to go murder SOMETHING. :chuckle:

The hardest part is being away from the family sounds corny but since we had the kids I have only been taking a week off. My wife and I think the kids are going to be old enough next year to go out so she is getting her Hunters Ed done this year so we can all go out and hunt next year. This was the first year both kids were able to see a dead animal and it didn't bother either of them. My son is 3 and my daughter is 5 both cant wait to get into the woods.
