This year's contestant. You're looking at the entire blood trail. Took her away from a very, very vocal 6x6.

Good Job to everyone who has been successful with elk it's a huge accomplishment
-
From Oct 6th on the westside. Couldn't tell if she was hit because she stood motionless just looking at me and I always keep shooting til they're on the ground. Turns out she was pretty much dead on her feet long enough for me to reload 3 times. Pretty crazy.
-
Good to have buddies on these days. 57 yards.
-
Good job all. Hope to have a pic to add in late archery.

There's a couple options. You can either use img tags like this [ img ] [ /img ] (without spaces) and put the image url in between them from a host such as imgur or photobucket, or the other option is uploading as an attachment. It's below the text box in the full editor. "+ Attachments and other options"

The forum requires a pic format not supported by the camera; however, just pull up the pic in your photos and screenshot it. Press quickly on power button and navigation button. The screenshot is supported.

Drove to Bumping 356 on Friday of last week. I had spent time in there this summer scouting and saw lots of good animals. Traded PMs with a few on here too.
I was in nice looking cows on Saturday (5), Sunday (9), Monday (2), and Tuesday (1). One cow and I stared at each other for 10 minutes before she pranced off. One cow barked 5 times so loud, I thought my ears were going to pop. I was only 30 yards from her. I could have had great shots every day, except my tag wasn't valid until Wednesday. I saw a nice bull, a Billy goat and his mate on the East face of Goose Prairie rock outcropping, and a heck of a lot of miles. In the eight days I was out, I put on almost 80 miles. There is a lot of great hunting ground in Bumping and I only saw a fraction of it. Found multiple kill sites, from other hunters and a nice lower jaw from a herd bull someone got and was planning for a euro mount. I'm bummed - skunked for the season. My boy was rear ended in August while driving to work. He still can't turn his head much. That hurt as I expected to spend time together on this hunt. It's hard to work the area by yourself and feel you did it justice.
Wednesday morning there was a hard frost, everything was crunchy or frozen. I bumped a cow at near 50 yards. I wasn't prepared and I blew an opportunity - that stunk. It was like being in a Looney Tunes cartoon. She was spinning around and running in mid air, all while I'm trying to get my gun ready and leveled for a shot. I felt like Wylie Coyote and she was the roadrunner.
Thursday, it rained like crazy. I had two cows across a ravine at what I thought was 300 yards. Turned out I underestimated the distance at over 400 yards and I undershot. I didn't know at the time, so I decided to go check and as I climbed the hill she was on, she climbed the hill I came from. Dang animals. I should have just waited.
Friday, I bumped three cows in the dark thick trees with no visible way to shoot. Sounds like a freight train the woods sometimes. Can see a blur of brown, branches cracking, and rustling trees, but no visible sign of the creature.
Today, I was skunked. As soft as the ground was and wet, it was optimal for walking through the woods. I put in about 4 miles of great terrain. Perfect tracks, sign, but no animals anywhere.
Every time I got busted from Wednesday on, it was my movement that did me in. I just can't believe I'm done. Wife's birthday, so I came home to take her and the kids out. Good luck to you still out there.

My dad had a 340 Cow tag so we went out Fri- Sun, we hunted hard and saw elk every day! Started in the LT Murry but didn't see anything there besides tons of people. Moved to a completely different part of the unit and that's when things started to happen. First day 8 elk in our new area at about 2000 yds running plus about 50 deer including some dandy bucks along with several groups of rutting bighorn sheep. I saw my first ram that broke a full curl, he was a full curl and a quarter; huge! We put on lots of boot miles and truck miles. Saturday 3 cows that crossed the rd in front of us at about 100 yds and then vanished into a clear cut. I'm pretty sure they are called timber ghosts for a reason. Saturday night I found a spot that everything was funneling down into so planned on being in there Sunday morning for our last chance. Headed up the hill Sunday morning to our new spot and right at daylight about two miles lower on the mountain we had about 30 elk run across the road on us and into a canyon. We pursed and had a few glimpses until we finally made it happen. 1/4 mile pack job with the game cart for me back to the truck but all worth it. Great three day father son hunt.

None for me this year. Drew Washougal but couldn't find them :'(

Naneum cow 9/20/15 at 7:15 am. 32 yd shot went 25yds and fell back down hill. Doubled lunged, heart and broke left front leg. All on film is the cool part. 1 1/2 mile drag out.

When you guys say 1.5 mile drag out are you doing this whole? Sounds like way too much work.

1 1/2 mile drag? A full size cow elk? :yike:
I wouldn't drag a deer even half that far. Man! How was your back after that? :o

Daughter's first elk at age 13. Took Veteran's day off for the first time since I got out the military 21 years ago to spend the day with her, the wife and the youngest daughter in the woods hunting.
Awesome day for sure.
Favorite quote so far, "these are a lot bigger than deer." :chuckle:

How was ryderwood this year? Plenty of elk? Last time I hunted ryderwood was when I was 15 with a youth doe tag. Saw quite a few elk back then.

Thank you! She only ran about 20 yards before she piled up nice and close to a logging road. Love it when it happens like that ;)

Ryderwood seemed busier with hunters this year than in the past. I've been hunting that unit for the past 7 years, biking in on the Sierra Pacific land and this year I ran into hunters around every corner. I was hoping with all the extra units open this year that there would be less people in Ryderwood. Guess everyone else had the same idea lol. A couple of times I ran into hunters down on spur roads at first light that I know did not bike or hike in the same way I did. They had to have come up from the bottom. I think SP still has a problem with people on quads sneaking in through the creek bottoms. Gets pretty frustrating for those of us who work hard to get back in there.
As far as elk they seemed pretty sparse this year. I saw a number of bulls early on while bear hunting but I think the bow hunters thinned most of them out. Out of our party of 4 we got 1 bull and my cow. One of our guys clean missed a bull at 80 yards otherwise would have had another. I didn't get my cow until the second to last day of season. Just happy to have gotten my meat since us muzzle loaders no longer have a late season in the Coweeman.

Here is mine. Harvested 11/8

She was about a 2 year old cow, backs were fine more sore in arms from holding log up to drag. Adrenaline was pumping for sure through all us guys being it was my first.

No field pics but got this Rimrock cow on Friday of general season. I crested a jeep trail coming out of the timber and sat against a tree to listen for a bit. She trotted through some windows and I couldn't get on her. Thinking she was gone, I stayed put and in a few seconds she appeared coming towards me at about 75 yards. She stopped full frontal, then continued towards me. I waited til she quartered to and let one rip. Tikka 300WSM with 180 gr. Barnes TSX. No follow up shot required. No loss or damage of meat. She ran past at 25 yards and crashed through some trees and crashed 75 yards down hill breaking her lower jaw when she face planted.
Another camp left the Jack-o-lantern and we rescued it. Pretty cool carving....
Things were pretty slow for us in that unit. I did see a nice 6x6 one evening and saw elk every day but not a single spike for 6 of us. My buddies wife did get a great 5x5 on opening day of the bull tag.
Still a great time to be in the woods with a great crew of friends.

I so wish I could transfer a cow tag to someone. It's been killing me sitting in bed unable to get out there, knowing we were so close to them. Combine that with the snow we got... :'-(

Forgot to add this important one, my cousin and his boy celebrated with his sons first elk. He was a little discouraged with the regular season wrong place at the wrong time but made it all better the second week with the Yakima North youth tag after all the hunters left the woods. Got into a big group of elk and made a great shot on the big ole lead cow. He is hooked for life.
