Title: Moose calling tips and techniques
Post by: buckmaster_wa on September 14, 2015, 07:32:10 PM
My hunting partner drew a great moose tag. Idaho Unit 1-1. His hunt runs from Sept 15-Dec1st. We are making a 5 day trip over there Sept 19-23rd. We should see some rut activity. I have watched a few videos of calling Moose. I am just looking for any tips that some of you guys might have. How long of a call sequence to use? Do you call from the bottom of drainages or from ridge tops? It sounds like the Bulls are generally up higher on the mountains this time of year. Should be an awesome hunt. Im excited to process all that moose meat.

Good luck to your partner.  I have a 1-2 tag in the same time frame, so I am heading over this weekend for a couple of days to see what's going on with the rut activity.

bulls are definitely starting to move around. Just call like you would to locate elk such as places where your call travels the furthest and being able to hear a lot of country. Listen hard as moose calls are not loud.

In my experience, If you hear a bull grunting or raking brush after you call he is definitely coming in. There's my tip.

I drew my WA moose tag in '08 for 49. Every moose grunt I got in response to my grunts that bull came in for a look. The only that didn't was when I had him coming to grunts and I did a cow call. He had a cow with him and when I cow called she got upset and started calling very aggressively to him and he left w/her. They never cleared the brush for a look at him.

a old bone or wooden boat paddle work good .... beat the crap outta suff ..... game ears work good some times hard to hear , not easy if windy so stay alert.

So do you mostly do bull grunts or a cow call to get a response from a bull?
