So my 2015 deer hunt went from a whitetail buck hunt to we "we only have 3lbs of ground" back to a whitetail buck
-
HUH?
-
2015 started out by not being selected for a mutiseaon tag, so archery it was.
I really wanted a whitetail buck this year, been a few years since i have targeted and killed one. Figured this year that will be my goal.
Labor day weekend was spent setting up camp, shooting some grouse and checking on things and maybe finding a bear, but deer would wait.
Got some grouse, no bear but a yote, and saw some deer with one nice 5x5 mulie with a right side sticker....but i was after a whitetail. Scouted a more whitailish area away from my place and found some promising prospects.
Decided i would return on the 16th for 5 days, hang some cams, put out some apples

Ya know Frank, I know a rancher who owns thousands of acres of land all a over the Bunch Rd road area.....it's all posted, " NO HUNTING " with big white signs and red paint lettering..

Got to camp the afternoon of the 16th, was relieved to find that since i left it on labor day no one had taken down, moved it, or crapped in it etc :chuckle:.
Got all settled and decided to go and check out a spot about 10+ miles from camp, see what the game trails are like and see if i want to set out cams etc..
s meat most years, but this year i wanted a whitetail buck, no trophy mind you, just a whitetail......no mulie...
I was informed before i left that we only had 3, 1 lb packages of ground venison in the freezer.. :yike:

Nope, but lots of property on bunch... ;) we gonna get together and kill a bear this year?
And stop jacking my thread old man :chuckle:

After finding my camp still intact i decided to double check gear, bow all set with my new 100yd pin (just installed), ultra light arrows cut 2 inches shorter that my draw length with expanding broadheads and lighted nocks....all set
tossed a few at the hay bail in the meadow, hit the paper plate 1 out of 3 times...im good

So the area i wanted to check out was a transition/bedding area between two clear cuts, one recent and one a few years old.
a section about 1/4 mile wide, it had been thinned years ago so should be a good start.
I had brought a trail cam and some apples if i found a place to put them, left them at camp first night so i could just do recon,
Hiked up to the upper corner of the older cut, lots of trails and no signs of free range cows (good if i wanted to put out apples) decided to sit on a heavily used trail area and watch what developed for the evening.
About an hour before sunset the deer started to come down, a mulie doe with a whitetail doe and her fawn..., they pass by and head to the clearcut.
A little while goes by and some more deer are making there way down the same trail...a few whitetail does and two whitetail spikes...
I have always been a shoot on the first day what you would on the last, and those does were bigger than the spikes...but i wanted a bit more.

I spot 2 deer working there way down through the trees on the trail im posted up on, tucked into 2 christmas tree size spruces.
I can see antlers on both, a 3x3 whitetail (4x4 if you have a small :chuckle: and a small mulie buck, 2x for sure cant see anything else...
They are just walking right down the trail towards where the does went, not a care in the world only if they keep going they will walk past me at 10yds..arrow is nocked but i need a window to draw...
They pass my 20 yd mark, still walking then stop!!!!! The mulie looks ahead, ears alert, no way they saw me, he is looking ahead, i dont know what he is looking at because i cant turn and look without spooking them...
He turns and looks behind him, the whitetail looks back then forward and begins walking again. then stops and looks back.
I draw, he is still looking back, basically facing me slightly off center with his right shoulder exposed, he is well within 20yds, brown fills my peep...i hold on him and let it fly...THWACK..

THWACK, a dead tree stump ?
-
Drilled him just right of center on his brisket (yeah i know, frontal shots...but i was not at 90yds), he drops down on his right side then springs up and runs right past me, i watch him go aways then lay down...i let him lay a bit and wait....i move towards him and he gets up,dragging the right side and goes about 10yds then over tea kettle when he drills a large rock with his antlers.
-
I move towards him and i cant believe it he rights himself and tried to get up, i nock another arrow in case and he tried to get up, goes about 10yds again and piles up...
As he lays, Little Buck Down.

CONGRATS MAN!!!!!!!!!!
-
So i fulfilled both goals, a whitetail buck and meat in the freezer...and a spot i will hang a cam and hunt for a few years if need be...
-
Nice going' Frank.
-
Congrats
-
Sweet! Way to get it done, love good stories and success makes it better.
-
All theses success photos are making me super excited for Muzzy Season!!
-
Dandy little buck and he will eat up just fine.
I think I may know that cut.....if you are coming "out" is the cut pretty big and the cut on the left....kind of circling around it? If its the same one I was thinking of doing some calling there to see if we could pull any yotes in. We load up and head out Sunday morning.....thanks for the intel and I'll keep you updated. Don't have to worry about those 3 lbs now...you got fresh meat! To bad you won't be out...we could of shared a dinner and sipped a little fireball.
Again, nicely done and sounds like a fun hunt.
-
Nope, completely different area, one that i never even got you guys close to. I usually don't venture more that a mile or two from camp but with the logging, thinning etc this area has gotten better, there is actually about 5 different cuts of varying years all around each other with timber strips dividing them...
Will be there next Sat calling for a yogi..
-
Got it......We will be heading out Friday.....our focus will be up where we hunted last year and will do a little grouse killing up around where you know where we will be.... :chuckle:
-
congrats buckmark. Nice whitetail. Good eats
-
Nice buck! I've only shot one WT (doe) here in WA, would like to get a WA buck sometime.
