Title: Any last tips?
Post by: police women of America on September 19, 2015, 08:16:05 PM
Almost hunting season for me!!! Any last tips on calls, tactics, ect. Are very appreciated! This will be my first year hunting I'll be going with my dad who has never been hunting. I'll be hunting Blacktail in a buck only zone.
I'll be hunting with my .308 bolt action rifle. Thanks!

Eyes and ear open and keep a PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) at all times and most of all be safe. Best of luck young lady.

Find a good view (quietly and slowly) and start glassing. Its crazy how many times you can glass an area and not see anything then glass again and they start appearing. NEVER let your guard down. The second you do youll jump one. Calls (aside from rattling antlers during the rut) is typically pretty useless on the wetside. Walk slow, walk light, be ready and be calm when something does jump up. 2-5 year old cuts are typically great places to hunt. Hunting blacktail can be miserable at times. But its worth the reward if you stay persistent

I remember being 11 or12 and a buddie and I getting dropped off up in the big W. and I actually shot a forker. That's when the fun begins! You or your dad ever gutted a deer? Be safe and have fun.

If you think you're walking slow, slow down even more. Watch where you step and keep your eyes moving at all times. Take a couple slow steps and stop and look.  When you find a place to sit, be patient and sit and sit and keep your eyes moving and glassing. Look for big vees between the reprod stuff, could be ears attached to a head staring directly at you and not moving. Look for white spots, could be the neck or the hind end of a deer. Look at the reddish brown rotten stump areas they like to bed on those. Watch for a flicker of an ear or twitch of a tail. Good luck.

I'll second going slow... if you think your going slow enough then slow down more. I haven't been able to get a Blacktail yet myself, but have just about stepped on a few because i was to busy trying to get to another spot. That and youtube is your friend watch plenty of gutting and field dressing videos, as far as butchering its pretty straight forward just follow the muscle .

As a fellow Wetsider', like all have said slow, quiet and stealthy. The second set of footprints isn't going to help much, but if you can set up on a clearcut, watch the edges, be patient, still, and enjoy your surroundings. There are some recent cuts that I have seen deer in recently. If you want you can PM me and I will give you some ideas on some locations that may be useful if they are near enough to you. Best of luck to you!

If you step to the edge of a clearcut and glass it over for a bit without seeing anything although it looks so promising that you think there should be something out there just back off the clearcut for 5 minutes out of sight. Take a break or have a drink or a sandwich and then check it out again thoroughly. On several occasions I've done that and spotted animals that were there all along but wouldn't move because they saw me come out the first time.

Take your oppurtunity when it arises, it may be the only one you get. Don't pass a deer on the first day you would shoot on the last. Make sure to take pictures if successful, and above all else you and your father have a blast together! Wish you the best of luck, and thank you for your daily duties!

When is your season?  If you need any help packing, gutting, or whatever don't hesitate to post on the site and ask.   :twocents:

Lots of great tips on the blacktail threads w/in the last few days.

One I have not seen is to take a step, stop and look into and under the cover with your binoculars.  Repeat, and if you think you are moving slow enough - move half that fast.   BT can be really hard to see sometimes.

Don't worry or get discouraged if you're not seeing many (or any) bucks the first weekend.  Most of the bucks are going to be nocturnal until the rut starts.  The last week of October you will want to make sure to be out looking for deer because they will start moving more during daylight hours looking for does.  :twocents:
