Title: Backcountry Tripods
Post by: robescc on September 21, 2015, 10:09:14 PM
I am looking for some recommendations on a light tripod for a spotting scope that i can use sitting and standing. I am 6 feet tall and have a straight spotter. I am going on a backcountry elk hunt in October and this is one of the last pieces of gear I need. I would like to stay under the $150 mark.

Have you looked at the Vortex Summit SS and Summit XLT?

Good tripods for the money.

I would look at Vortex too.  I picked up a vortex last week and like it (SSP).  The tripods come with the same warranty as their scopes.

It may be hard to find a tripod that goes to 5 1/2 feet that is stable and that you want to carry.  You may want to try looking through a scope/tripod combo while standing up, imo it is pretty much worthless.

I really like the Promaster tripods. New they run around $250, but I picked up a used one on Amazon for $150.

Slip compact II, less than 30 dollars and weighs just over a pound. Used one for 3 season until it broke, just bought the same exact one and will use the old one for spate parts.  ;)

I always have problems with my tripod. Every time I lock it down and then let go it drops or moves some. Most of the time completely off my target. Any suggestions or is this normal?

You need a better head. Try a Manfrotto 700rc2, or an Outdoorsman's, for panheads, or there are a lot of good ball heads on the market.

Thy do weigh a lot!! The only reason I put a fluid head on my tripod is cause we film our hunt and want our footage very smooth.. I couldn't do it with a ball head cause it was to choppy.
