Just for fun I thought I'd post a pic of a buck and was curious how many guys would call this (in the field) legal and how many would let it walk...

From the photo supplied, looks to be a pretty slick 2 point unless, his left side front has that tiny crab that is so common with these. Don't see any eyeguard points. If this was my best view in the field, based on that, he would walk.
EDIT after second photo: I still let him continue to walk away, that cab claw does not appear anywhere close to 1" in my opinion.

I would let this guy go...unfortunate. I have let deer like this go before.
-
close but no cigar. I'd let it walk...

:yeah: I swear an hour or 2 of every season is spent with these type bucks under the spotter scrutiny... not once have I made the decision to shoot.
-
He'd live to see another day.... Not enough there to chance it.
-
depends on what side of the mountain :sry:
that could be a just West Blacktail :chuckle:
ok, now that I can say that appears to be the dry side and that is a Muley, he only gets shot by the camera
-
That's not even close to being a 3 point.

I disagree :chuckle:

Close...but not a shooter!

That little kicker on the right is close, but that deer gets cussed at and lives another day if it's me. :twocents:

:yeah: :bash:

I'd need to be about 25 yards from that buck to see it good enough to know if it's legal. Based on the pictures I wouldn't shoot.
-
That little crab claw isn't big enough to be a three point. I wouldn't shoot.
-
Very hard to tell from pics.
-
Noooooooooooooooooo
-
Assuming this is a 3-pt or better unit, I wouldn't shoot with those views. I'm about 70% sure it is 1" but that isn't enough to risk it.
-
No way.... But I would pass on him even if that sticker was 2" anyways :chuckle:
-
I don't see that kicker being 1", he walks.
-
I have the same exact deer that hangs around my house. He's tall and wide and a 2 point..
-
Shoot first and ask questions later is what I say!
If that little tang isn't an inch long, you have 3 choices, 1. Leave it as it lays, 2. pack it up at night and head home, 3. which is always my favorite, duck tape a 6" branch on it, then it will be a legal 3pt.....

Must be something in the water, Grant Co. Seems to have a lot just like that guy.
Wonder how many times that deer has been to. Cross hairs, safety off, finger on the trigger. :chuckle:
-
From those pics i would pass, an inch is not much but that looks way to close to call.
Why do i the feeling you may have a pic from a different angle to show us.
*
I shot a buck almost exactly like this years ago, saw him at dusk and he was a slick 2, but some other bucks same in after shooting light that were legal so i went back the next evening to wait them out, out came this 2 again and with a different angle he had grown a front 2inch crab over night.
-
Too close to call, it's a 2.5× lol :chuckle:, have to let it walk.
-
They need to open up a youth 2point mule deer draw...

Why? I thought the restriction was in place to let some bucks survive the hunting season.
-
Have you seen the number of large 2-points over here? The gene cops need to get them out of the pool before that's 75% of the herd. :twocents:
-
It's my thread and I don't care if it gets sidetracked some....
Mature buck 2 points would be something I would be in favor of seeing harvested. Can't say I like to see culls like this left to get all the ladies.
-
Shooter all day!!
-
Is a 2 point inferior in some way or is it only because hunters like bucks with lots of points that you'd like them out of the gene pool?
-
Mature 2 pts are inferior. They can't be harvested and will remain "safe" to spread their inferior seed.

Honestly I think mule deer hunting needs to change. But that pesky manageme t is necessary. Im not sure how much time youve spent in the basin area, but there a LOT of those big 2points out there. I belive we are selective breeding mule deer to have 2 points since they get hunted so hard, at least in that area. My sugestion is mostly to mix the genetic pool back up. Its possible to do the same thing several different ways. But im always incli ed to give a special chance to kids first. You could also make archery 2 point or better. I dont think there a whole lot of archers that kill many deer over there. 2c

That point isnt 1/2" long its 12" long with a 2" point coming off of it. The definition of a point is all antler points have to be 1" or longer measured from the longest side so which point is the main and which is the kicker from the main. All i know is that one of the 2 is connected to the main beam!! It would be interesting to send that pic to a lawyer with a copy of the regulations.

I shot a buck that had three little points like that coming off a big two point and my thinking was that one had to be at least an inch. I was wrong. The biggest was about 1/8 inch short. I didn't hide it I didn't call my self in I just chalked it up to a lessoned learned. I could tell my hunting partner was dissappointed in me and that alone was punishment enough.

I shoot 0 points - it's all about the law. If a 2 point was legal, I wouldn't think twice about taking it on a general tag.
-
nice two but let him walk
-
I say 2X3. Looks like a point off the back left side.
