Who is coming to visit our fair state for deer or elk this year. What species will you be hunting and if you want to say what area
I'll be hunting deer and elk both in unit 39, as well as my second deer tag for the wildlife refuge 5 min from the house.
-
Leaving next Thursday for elk, 2 weeks of bliss!!! 10a.
-
Trophy just elk or deer as well?
-
I'd like to try and head over the week before thanksgiving for whitetail. Never been over and it would be a shot in the dark but you have to start somewhere. Hopefully something works out, if not, I will try and plan again for next year.
-
Headed over in November for deer. Can't wait. First Idaho adventure for me.
-
Two trips for deer end of October and med November. Two different units.
-
Good luck to you all
92xj if I were you I'd look into some of the areas on the Palouse. Lots of landowners willing to allow hunters if one is willing to knock on a door and ask
-
Already logged 10 days with archery tackle. Headed back with rifle in hand.
-
Rolling back from eastern Idaho archery elk now. Will post story of the Idaho Family Hunt in a new thread!!!!!! :IBCOOL:
-
Headed over for our annual november deer also. Hopefully lots of grouse again this year also, was fun shooting those little buggers after we tagged out. Looking forward to maybe getting a shot at a wolf also. My brother missed one two years ago there. Lots of tracks
last year also.
-

just elk this time, pretty sure we are going back in mid November for whitetail, can't wait!
-
All depends on when i notch my deer tag here. If i find the right wa buck early enough ill head to unit 1 for more deer hunting. I tend to be picky and let lots of bucks walk though. This year i have the quality permit, so ill probably be even more selective. We will see
-
Elk in unit 26 for me.
-
I was in Avery for 9 days, 2weeks ago wolf hunting. Does that count for anything ? :chuckle:

Still on the fence for late whitetail wolf hunting extravaganza. If I leave W.A. I might not come back and I have to see my daughter graduate. :o

-
I be in 10A hunting deer and elk.

Rattling whitetails in 10a with my daughter. Probably heading over around Nov. 16th.
-
Ill be the guy following you! 8)
-
Didn't get my permit so I may be heading over around thanksgiving to hunt late archery in 39.
Let me know if that happens because unless I see a real monster during rifle I'll probably be spending a little time chasing them with archery tackle as well
-
I will be moose hunting for the next week in 1-2. I already spent a long weekend scouting/hunting and only seen 2 below average bulls, so hopefully I find a decent bull this go around
-
Missing role call this year. Will be back in 2016.
-
I was in the Pioneer zone from the 6th-14th last month. Won't be till next year till I'm back in Idaho with a tag in my pocket.
-
Got a bull the first week of September in Idaho and headed back for a late mule deer tag in November. I'm pretty excited because this is the first big game tag I've ever drawn besides a spring bear permit.
-
Leaving on the 23rd for a week in unit 11 for deer with my youngest son, which should be fun!
-
Got approved for the 11th-13th off work. Headed over to 4a for my second annual Idaho deer camp.

I have a Clearwater whitetail tag and an 8, 8a, 11a elk tag. Gave it hell for the archery season with no luck. I'll be back over for rifle deer season and muzzleloader cow or spike.
-
Was chasing elk from the 15th through the 26th. Toughest year yetbut but still had a blast. My cousins bull that he shot.

-
Oct. 18-24 units 8/8a with a deer tag. Hopefully back in November if I don't tag out. If we are on them I can always pick up an elk tag as well!
-
Anyone who will be hunting 10A want to meet up at The Vug in Pierce for a beer? Anytime between the 18th and Thanksgiving.
-
My cousin and I will be over Nov. 11-18th for whitetails.
-
I helped a friend get a North Idaho Moose last month. Heading to Southern Idaho for a 5 day MD hunt this week. Might head back in mid November for a WT hunt.
-
Leaving next Thursday for elk, 2 weeks of bliss!!! 10a.

3nails,
I believe The Vug is shut down, at least it was last year between Nov. 8th-23rd, 2014 and this June when I was up that way.
Our annual white tail camp will be the 7th thru the 22nd this year. I will only be in attendance the 7th thru the 11th then have to head home to help my 13 year old with his quality mule deer draw hunt.
Should be an above average year after the mild winter last year. Good luck everyone

Headed to the Selway oct 21-31st. Deer and Elk.

Bummer! Oh well, no takers anyways. Every rut report that I've read so far is predicting an early rut. Most say peak chase activity the 1st through the 11th. You may hit it just perfect!
-
Whitetails here in NW MT are showing signs already
Saw a couple 3 year old bucks sparing the other night
Might be early this year

It seemed a bit early last year also we set camp on the 8th and I shot the "double money" buck on the afternoon of the 9th. (We have a pool, $ for first buck and $ for biggest buck.)
-
Where I belong!!! Good luck Idaho hunters!
I truely love that sign!!!! Idaho really stands up for the sportsman and the wildlife. Keeps predators under control as well!!!!!
-
Found this guy (seven scorable points) on a property that only my friend and I have permission to hunt. After not tagging out on this last trip, I am chomping at the bit to get back over there and see if I can't put him in the ground. Odds are I'll probably shoot a doe, but holy crap he would look nice above my fireplace.
-
Leaving the evening of November 10th after work for a 10 day white tail hunt. We hunt from Emida north to Clarkia. This is the third year that I've been fortunate enough to go. I LOVE IDAHO!

We went up on the 9th got camp ready. Hunted the next 5 days with one bull down. Nice spike. Went back to town for a day to get supplies. No luck the next few days. Gave it 2 days to settle down a bit and me and one of my hunting partners went back up to camp. Next morning we both went diff spits and both tagged out on 5 pt bulls. Awesome way to end the hunt. I saw a total of 5 bulls thru the season. One pushing 350. Just cldnt get it done. Another pushing 320. Guess I'll get em next year.

Nice job, way to stick with it. It was a tough year for us over there, 2 spikes out of 3 guys.

Ended up with this guy. Nice big body and nice antlers. My widest buck to date at 20 inches.

heading over for a week on november 21st to try and rattle some white tails in 10a. this will be my first time hunting idaho and I'm super excited!! already notched my tag here in wa on a 5x3 mulie
-

-
Pioneer zone archery, tag soup. Had my chance(s), can't complain too much. Bro in law and buddy just got blanked for deer in units 33/34.
-
This week in Idaho, I pulled over on a narrow road to let a local jalopy drive past.
"Go back to Warshint'n in yer fancy truck!" He growled as he clattered and banged up the rocks. :chuckle:
I didn't know a 2000 Dodge Ram was a fancy truck. After forking over $500 to hunt deer and wolf in Idaho, the least he could say is thank you :chuckle:

I'm headed over for whitetail the week before Thanksgiving. First time for me and my buddy
-
Well, I am going to give it a go. Some good friends of mine have invited me to get an Idaho whitetail tag, and I live just seven miles from the WA-ID state line (closest Idaho unit is Unit eight). I am excited, but I really don't know how it's going to go! I have only hunted with modern firearm 2-3 times in the last eight years (most of my hunting is with muzzleloader). The Savage .243 is sighted in with some 100 grain bullets. Think I will give rattling and grunting a try as the rut heats up.
-
Im over here right now...nothing yet

The bucks are scraping- first thing I saw when I stepped into the ponderosas was a fresh scrape. I saw a large buck chasing three does just off the highway on the way to the property, but didn't see any out hunting. The surprise conference call for work at 1:00 PM sure put a dent in my afternoon hunt! Grrr. Good luck to all of you out there!
-
How's it looking over there guys? Snow levels? I still have five days to go before heading over :bash:
-
There was snow on Sunday night above 3200' on Moscow Mountain, but I bet the snow level has risen with the warm rain last night. There is a colder front coming this Sunday night, but highs are supposed to return to the mid-40s at low elevations. If you are hunting much higher, snow may be a concern, though! Good luck.
-
Thanks for the update! I'll be starting around 3000 ft.
-
You might have a good skiff of tracking snow... And the rut is starting to heat up a bit for the whitetails.
-
Heading out early tomorrow morning. Hope to hit the rut just right.
-
Hey MountainTracker- my hunting partner in Idaho said the bucks are indeed starting to lose some caution- he said a big whitetail ran across the highway in front of his truck today. So you may be hitting it just right! Good luck!
-
We were there all last week. Around Bonners Ferry. Very little if any signs of rutting bucks where we were at. We got snow, a few inches one night and we bailed out a day early because it was snowing hard another night. We were camped at almost 4K'. 3 of us ate tag soup. Tough country to hunt with it being so thick. Had visibility issues with the snow and fog. Maybe next time we go a little later in the year so we have more reliable rut. We had a good time though. Thanks to all of those who shared advice with me.

My first Idaho hunt could hardly have gone better. It was not exactly a wilderness hunt, being in the farm and forest mix of the lowlands, but the cold temperatures, the skiff of snow in the woods, and the sunny blue skies made it a classic early winter experience.
*Short story* After a day and a half of grunting and rattling in thick timber and brush, I set up to wait for a good meat doe on a friend's hay pasture. After just 20 minutes, I was blessed with the appearance and quick harvest of a beautiful mature whitetail buck.
*Long write-up* On Saturday, I headed out with a friend who wanted to learn about hunting. We did a number of ground setups with rattling and grunting, but the only deer we saw was a doe at long distance through the ponderosa pines. We did see a lot of wildlife, though, including sharp-shinned hawks, wild turkeys (loud!), and numerous songbirds. On Sunday, my hunting plans with friends fell through due to a small family emergency on their part. I called another friend of mine, and he told me there were more than enough deer to go around on his property, and that I was welcome. I help him with some farm chores until about noon, and then slip into the timber. I set up over a brushy draw with the east wind in my face, and spend the next two hours grunting and rattling occasionally. I call in two deer, both of which I never see. One comes in through the brush and mature timber down the draw to my right, making noise but never stepping out. The other came in behind me through a ten year old ponderosa plantation, and I hear footsteps turn to hoof-beats as the frosty breeze carries my scent to his infallible nose.
Half amused and half frustrated by how both the deer and I shared "success" in my calling session, I return to my friend's hay field, which he assured me brings out 2-3 does on a very regular nightly basis. With only this weekend to dedicate to my hunt, I give up on antlers, and decide that a doe is a very good use of this particular Idaho tag. I set up under a pine near an old hay barn, with the wind in my face. The low November sun cast a golden shine to the larches, pines, and Douglas-fir, and the green sprouts in the hay pasture had thawed from their frost. Looking out through the low branches, I decide that the longest shot I would have on a deer is directly south, to where a lobe of the pasture sits between a young pine plantation and a brushy patch at 200 yards distance. I spend 2-3 minutes getting my shooting sticks and stance just right to make a shot there. And not fifteen minutes later... it happens. A large-bodied deer emerges at the very spot I have set up for, and I glance with the binoculars. My jaw drops, and I do not need to count points to begin scrambling to get my rifle to my shoulder. The buck walks fifteen yards down the field edge, neck stretched as he tests the breeze for the scent of does. I wait, with a pounding heart, as he turns broadside. I hold a little high on his vitals, and steady the .243 Savage on the shooting sticks. A trigger pull, an explosion, a staggering run into the pines on the part of the deer, and a breathless 90-yard blood trailing job lead me to where this beautiful buck had fallen among the snowberry and the tall grasses of the forest edge. A waxing moon rises as I perform the rituals: tagging, field dressing, and placing the "last bite" ('letztes Bissen'- German hunting tradition of last respects) of grasses in the mouth of the fallen champion. I am mostly a meat hunter, generally a taker of does; but over the course of my life I do not see it as inconsistent to take the occasional trophy buck, and be grateful for the gift of both meat and the memory-keeper of antlers.
Best of luck to all of you for the rest of this fall! And HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Well after hunting quite a bit during late archery and knowing that I had an empty freezer and family to feed I decided it was time to shoot any deer(yearlings not included), I spotted a few does feeding on a ridge within about 1/2 mile of the road in a stalkable location. As I peeked over the rockpile I thought they would be behind I saw nothing. I noticed another rockpile about 100 yds away and thought to myself I had made a mistake and gone to the wrong rockpile. I went back and grabbed my pack which I had dropped before sneaking over the rocks. I turned and walked right back over the rocks I'd just been standing at and the deer busted from 10 yds downhill, I laid down immediately and they settled down when they got out to about 90 yards, then the biggest doe decided she needed to investigate. She kept creeping closer and when she went behind a bush at 55 yds I drew. She took a few steps into the clear and stopped and I let fly and watched my arrow sail over her back. She took off and circled around to the uphill side of me and started creeping back in still unsure of what was going on, this time she reached 70 yds and I let fly and again watched my arrow sail over her back. This time she had had enough so I went and started searching for my arrows. I planned to retrieve my arrows and head back to my truck but I found fresh deer sign all over the hillside while searching and decided I needed to investigate a little more. I headed over the next couple of little rises and found deer everywhere. I probably glassed up 100-150 deer from the spot I was sitting in but could hardly find a buck amongst the various groups. I found a decent 3 point in the one group and they were in perfect position for a stalk so I worked my way around and above them on some rimrock, but when I crept over the top the buck was nowhere to be found. There were several does still there however and meat was goal 1 so I picked a nice fat doe, ranged her at 55 yds, stepped back and drew my bow. 1 step forward to the edge again and she is turned back licking her side with her head and neck covering the vitals, I held at full draw till she turned back forward and let fly. She took off like a banshee and I thought I had missed again but she took a tumble about 20 yards out and I knew I had found my mark. I watched her lay down and expire within sight but decided a little bloodtrailing practice is never a bad idea. This is what I found(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F03%2Fba88fd9efb366f03f1e25b5ed04c0e76.jpg&hash=640e62461bb5416babc8d8dbca51f713d1bdbe7c)
I followed it the rest of the way to my deer and got to work. Here's a photo of the deer(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F03%2F926706cbcd0e856860fa250dbe8b4646.jpg&hash=347bfa9bc03fa8dacb96ef870bc95f1ad31a9bb5)
After I was done dressing her out I started putting things away in my pack and turned behind me to find a large group of deer had wandered into the draw I was in(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F03%2Ff912121184d071d79c29619612dc2749.jpg&hash=35c0c171501a48d45628c8996920e24fa3a17739)
No reason for that pic other than just a bunch of deer and an idea of the kind of country I was hunting. This doe is tasty(they always are)
