Post by: BigBullDreamer11 on October 02, 2015, 07:04:15 AM
Anyone do any good up there so far? I seen acouple 2 points and got busted by a 3 point before i could get to full draw but after elk season wasn't getting into buck as much. I think they have got nocturnal.. Post pics and story  if you were successful..

All I've seen up there so far are does. Did have a nice bear step out at about 100 yards and take a drink out of a mud puddle, 11:00 in the morning 9/30. Looked up at me for a second then  bolted.

I have multi season tag too but passed on a bunch of doe. It was hard but I managed to wait. I drove around last night probably 50 miles on the bridge gate side where I saw a bunch of bear sign a few months ago and didn't see a single deer. Saw 5 bulls though and a grouse. Not even a bunny. Which were going down if I saw them.

Heading to Kapowsin Sunday and Monday. IF I don't get luck will head out Thursday through the 31st.

Hoping the hunting pressure slows down a bit. I am using the Buckley Gate area. Felt "all alone" out there all year not the pumkins have invaded. Still, isn't that bad, almost happy to see people out there.

If you a Silver F150 XLT out there, that is me. Planning on sitting in my little blind watching the edge of some cuts. Hoping the deer start moving around.

If that does not work will move into the woods a bit from the cut and rattle.

Would you guys/gals rattle in a cut watching the edge?

First light in the mornings, by far, I have seen the most deer in the cut edges. Undisturbed, I can sit and watch them feed until they slip away into the timber, or lay under a tree, or next to some brush, up until around 8:30.
After that all hit and miss. I would say the first hour of good shooting light.
Don't get me wrong, I consider myself lucky and in the right place at the right time when I tag a deer. I just hunt areas where I see the most activity. I have alot of vacation time available at work, which helps big time.
I know you have heard about the 10:00 to 2:00 time frame. I have killed most of my deer during that time in my hunting life.
Don't forget all the overgrown roads between cut areas, with timber in between,  lots of light and miday feed. I know of a certain road that has had  3 bucks killed on within 100 yards of each other. Slowly walking and sitting, always mid-day.

My niece got her first solo hunt deer out of there beginning of modern. Only been hunting 2 years and she's 2 for 2! Her boyfriend has been working 7 days a week so she decided to hunt solo for the first time. Got a cute little 2xspadeXspike.

Not exactly where of course, but what was the location? Edge of cut, 50 yards into woods? Again, big grats. Going to hit it Friday and Saturday.

Hunted hard today, walked/hiked 8.2 miles. Walked lots of new ground had never been on before. No luck, but felt good to get out there. Going to pass on it last day of season/Saturday. Took today off to be out of the crowed. Found some new areas to hunt and will be scouting those getting ready for late season.
Was more fun scouting before season. It is like all the deer have vanished. Was almost running over and falling over them a few weeks ago.
Lots of nice elk including bulls on my trail cams, but deer vanished start of elk archery season.
Hoping late season the deer a running around again.

I went in on Thursday from 1pm til dark.  Glassed two cuts.  One had  6 does in it.  Watched them for a couple of hours hoping a buck would show himself but didn't happen.  Was nasty out (raining sideways and fog) which prevented a lot of good glassing time.

Feel like a candy-ass but waiting until late season. Hit it hard Friday but didn't even bump anything walking just inside the forest next to cuts.

Where do the deer go this time of year? Not seeing on trail cams either. But do see lots of Elk.

Into thicker cover than a human can hunt easily. They seem to move less too unless at night.

Story of my life when it comes to blacktail hunting. I bust my hump all season and draw a blank. My neighbor goes out 1 day and shoots a 3pt in a clearcut at 10:00am. The things are frustrating.

I read all the posts and replys to hunting blacktail and I just gotta say I love it... and ease don't take this wrong, but I love peoples frustration when it comes to blacktail  :chuckle: they done call them the grey ghosts for nothin.. :chuckle:... my daughter and i seen 11 yesterday, 4 were bucks, two spikes a two point and a 2x3 , she didn't want to shoot any of the spikes and the branched bucks we seen at different times but they were walking through the timber and she just couldn't get them lined up good enough to crack one.. one huge thing about huntn blackies, is that its alot different than hunting muleys or whitetail. Keep after it fellas..good luck all..

We saw a bunch of deer yesterday, when the rain finally let up. My son shot at a spike, twice, and missed him. I thought it was odd, since unlike his dad, he is a pretty good shot. A little latter, he says deer, bails out of the truck, and disapears. Comes back a few min later, and is pissed cause he had a 2 point and his scope was fogged, so he didn't get a shot at him. I start cleaning his scope up for him, and notice his front mount is loose. Hmmmm, maybe that's why you missed the first deer!! So we get that fixed up, and later right before dark, we are driving out and come around a corner, and I spot a small 2 point in a Christmas tree patch. He gets out, the deer takes off, straight away, no shot. No tags filled yet, on to late buck.

Worked hard all day yesterday.  Ended up finding a 2pt at 10yds in the reprod after the rain let up around 5pm.  Heard a lot of shots throughout the day, but took me all day to find mine.  10yds with my 300 win mag and he took off just fine and didn't bleed a drop.  Finally went back for a flashlight and found him 50 yds away.  Not one of the big boys I've had on trail cams last few months but after holding out last year for a big one and coming up short I decided I wasn't gonna pass on any branched buck.

Early season losers lounge for me.  Missed an easy opportunity at a nice forkhorn on Wednesday.  Stuck and stayed with the does I found the first week, but it never really payed off.  The big bucks seemed to be pretty locked up still.  Onto late season, hope they are still rutting.

Not to worried, I've shot a few bigger deer late season that were still in rut mode!!

Remind that Kapowsin is closed November 7-18th for Elk Season.

It does kind of suck, because that is exactly when I want to be scouting hard.

At least the trail cams can be working November 7-18th. But that does leave only the first day of late season rifle to gather that data.

Oh Well.

I am really curious, maybe I should start a poll, but I doubt to many would answer truthfully, but i am curious who here hunts just to hunt! Or who hunts for the " so called putting meat in the freezer" or who hunts to just enjoy the thrill of what might be hiding behind the next Bush or over the next bump? I see from alot of posts and responses that some , actually alot get all worked up if they don't get " THEIR" deer or "THEIR" elk. Everyone has their reasons for huntn, mine is I luckily was raised that way and its my favorite time of year and there is no better sport or quarry than a mature blacktail buck!! I really don't care if I notch a tag or not, I could have notched it a total of 6 times this season so far but didn't squeeze the trigger. My daughter gave a good go at crackn one but just couldn't get things lined up, I think it was buck fever, but she wont admit to that... I am curious as to why some people hunt though :dunno:

I am a meat in the freezer type at the core. But a huge part is also "hunting" in itself. Meat in the freezer and hunting are so closely bound I don't know how to separate the two.

Hunting for me connect my body, mind, and spirit to life, god, universe. Even if I am hating it getting rained on and falling over crap as I walk through the woods, I feel alive.

Also it is the only "risk" many of us ever take. A person could get killed out there in a few different ways. Like once I ran into a Bull Elk during rut season and it wanted to kick my ass.

Hunting is how I shake off humanities over-domestication yearly all I possibly can.

I hunt because of the thrill of not knowing what I might find out there. That monster buck who's antlers have never even seen the daylight!
looks like Kapowsin is closed right now. According to there website, it is opening back up Nov 3rd.
Road damage from the recent storms.

I got a lot of the same opinions as Jackmaster, maybe that's cause I've known him since he was a little snot nosed kid!! But ya, I just want to be in the woods, All the time, I don't give a crap if I shoot anything or not. I hunt all year long, not with my rifle, but with my desire to see what's over the next hill, find sheds, put up a camera and see what walks by. We all got so much garbage that this world throws at us, the further I get from town and the deeper into the woods I get, the better I feel. The hunt is the main thing for me, if I am blessed to tag an animal, that's good, but not my main reason. I could just walk through the woods and look at all of Gods creation all day, every day and never get tired of it.

I'm right there with most of you guys. I don't hunt to kill. I hunt because I was raised around it. I love the outdoors and everything that comes with it. One of the things I enjoy more than anything is taking a newbie out. I love taking kids out. And when that glorious time comes when they actually harvest their first animal I'm just excited as they are. This year when I harvested my bull I was shaking uncontrollably. My wife had to actually look at me and tell me to calm down  :chuckle:

Kapowsin. I enter through the Buckley Gate.

Well Craig if you just keep walking those roads like you are you will get a chance, thats all it really takes, just walk roads, even if people are driving right on by, the trick is to not pay attention, blacktail bucks know when your not paying attention and presto, opportunity will knock.. Hopefully the big deer loosen up a little more for late season.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F29%2Feae6e3552d6c341ff7022664f84c567f.jpg&hash=de5dfba12c3bde20391b37ea399f7dcbdc5b3a8b)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F29%2F055233584507a213c466cb5086c21b30.jpg&hash=a9b25e36c1e96c7e4dc143926e7f010ffc22fe03)

Not exactly where of course, but what was the location? Edge of cut, 50 yards into woods? Again, big grats. Going to hit it Friday and Saturday.

Sorry for the late reply. The big 3x3 was taken crossing a road from clearing to thick nasty reprod and the smaller 3x2 was taken 20 yards inside timber off a grass road.  The heavy 3x2 I took in the monsoon on the 30th was standing with a doe in dark big timber. Was cruising through there off the road to stay a little dry compared to the old brushy right of way.  They're definitely there and the rut and the nasty weather really helped.
