Opening day for the muzzy season came and I had a bull tag in my pocket.I hunted the so called "elk highway" were I had located a bull a day before the season. I got in there opening day and there were hunters everywhere, but no sign of the bull. :bash:
-
Tag. Thank God Plat isn't telling this story. Lord knows it would be entertaining, but I just can't handle the anticipation.
-
You know, for as much as Bob is getting paid you'd think by now he would've made a popcorn eating emoticon... :dunno: :chuckle:
-
35 min. Between paragraphs!! This is going to be EPIC!!!
-
Well I hunted there and seen a few spikes, and cows but no bulls. I at mid-day I went to another area, and hunted till dark, but I didn't even see a single elk.
-
How could you possibly pull this off with the bald one ? :chuckle:
-
No-hair, shhhh...it's story time right now brother, you don't interrupt the elder when he's telling a story. :chuckle:

Now where's the pics?

The second day of the season came and my caller didn't want to get up. So I ventured out on my own with hopes of finding some bulls. I started to hike before sunrise, I reached a deep draw and I let out a location bugle. I got one to respond immediately down in the draw. I made my way down to him, but I got busted by the wind when it decided to change direction. :bash: as I stood there in the draw I heard rocks falling coming down to me, then I seen a few cows walking down to me about a 100 yards out. Then I heard a bull bugle, but he sounded small. As he appeared I seen he was a small 4 point standing broadside at a 100 yards but I decided to pass.
-
I really hope this is not a trend...
-
We could have a pole of how many pages before we see it.
My guess is 8 pages... He will show the elk at page 8
-
I say 3
-
Page 4. :chuckle:
-
He's posting at nearly paragraph every hour and 1 pic every 4 hrs so I say tomorrow page 3. :chuckle:

Day three came around and I was set on hunting the area I had hunted on the second day, but I remembered what a member on HW said "don't drive by elk to hunt elk." So as I was driving I remembered I had seen elk in an area, so I stopped the truck and set out a location bugle. He responded immediately 200 yards above me.
-
When he responded it was 545 am so I had to wait an hour before daylight. As daylight approached I made my way towards the creek bottom. He was bulging light crazy cows all around him. I hit him with the phelps cow call and he would respond and then I would cut him off with a challenge bugle. He came running in and then he hung up in the brushy creek bottom. This went on for about 2 hours of me chasing him, and calling to him. Eventually I walked right up to a raghorn bull ( which I thought was the herd bull) he was in the brush so it was hard to tell. He had me pinned so I took a shot at the part of his neck that was visible. After the shot I seen him bust out of the creek bottom and over the hill. Clean miss :bash: I searched for blood, but there was nothing. I went up the hill, and there was nothing. As I was trying to track the bull the herd bull took off over the hill barking away with his cows :bash:

Man...now I know how you guys felt... :chuckle:

Well after the morning hunt I went home to shower since I hadn't showered for 4 days :chuckle:. I was home with my wife, and 9 month old son feeling real comfortable. When I received a text from " one with the elk" he said he wanted to meet me at my camp so he could call in a bull for me.
-
He said he would be there by 330. So I got to my camp at 3 and waited patiently for "one with the elk" arrive. Well he finally arrived, and he asked if there was an area that held elk near my camp. I told him of an area just were I had located a bull a week before the opener, so we decided to give it a shot.
-
So we got into the area where I heard the bull bugle, and started hiking up high. We reached the top and "one with the elk" let out a sharp cow call. The bull responded down in the draw. He told me to stay 50 yards in front of him and to move in as he keep cow calling. This went on for about 15 minutes until finally I was within 30 yards of this guy, I couldn't see him.

:yike: now it's getting good.....

Looks like tomorrow is coming

I don't have the patience for this...let alone the patience to right a story up over multiple days. Lol. Just joking. I'm only half serious. :hello: we're all on the edge of our seats. Thanks for taking the time to write your story.

He's actually moving pretty quickly here compared to this story.....

See what you did Plat!
-
I pulled my pack off as the bull stood there bugling, and chuckling. "One with the elk" gave him a few more calls after the bugle and he came charging in. I couldn't see him the brush was in the way, but I knew he was no more than 10 yards away. I had the wind in my favor so I wasn't worried about busting him. When was 10 yards away he let another bugle out, talk about exciting when you have never experienced a bull bugle so close. It is something I will never forget.

:yeah:
-
As I sat there a lot of things went through my head. Was this really happening? I kept asking myself. I also kept telling myself don't screw this up lol. Well the bull started to move way from me towards an opening about 30 yards away. I stood up knowing I would get a shot, and there he stood not more than 30 yards away. What a magnificent animal the rocky Mountain elk is! I raised my smoke pole for the shot, and connected the dots on the open sights. I aimed for the boiler room, and pull the trigger. The knight bighorn had spoken.
-
 Yaaaaaaaaaa. ..finally
-
Its been 40 minutes. He MUST be finishing the story now... right?

I have at least 2 meetings to go to before pictures are posted so I want to be able to find it again.
-
"One with the elk" is Plat by the way. So after the shot the bull disappeared, and the tracking began. He went about 100 yards and piled up. My shot went in slightly quartering away and came out to his front shoulder. The bull was still alive so I had to put another in him to finish him off. I couldn't believe my eyes this was my biggest bull to date!
-
So big, that his picture won't even fit on my screen! :dunno:

Heck I seen the pic yesterday!!! Must suck to wait :chuckle:

Almost there. ..... :chuckle:

Here he is not the biggest bull in the woods, but he's my biggest. He is my third elk, and first muzzleloder kill. I couldn't have done it without Plat. I hardly knew him, and I told him my caller had left camp, so I was trying to do it by myself. He offered to drive up to my camp and help me call in a bull. I guess you can say scouting paid off with this bull, because I had located a bull in the area a week before the season. For those of you that haven't meet Plat he is a good guy that is very happy to help hunters succeed. There is no way I could ever possible thank him for what he did for me.
