Hey All,
Have some extended family who recently purchased 40 acres of private land to the right of Hwy 2, a couple miles from Coles Corner. It would basically be considered "lower" chiwawa unit in my opinion.
It will be my first time hunting this area and I plan to setup camp close to the highway then hunt 2-3 miles northeast from there. Have done some recent scouting and have seen your typical Game trails on ridges, deer along with bear/cougar poop and some bedding areas near clear cuts and food sources.
I imagine there will be quite a bit of other hunters during MF general season opener coming from the Plain, WA Area... So what I'm wondering is if
anyone else out there as had success in the lower 245 Chiwawa unit during Modern Firearm General Season?? Any tips for this area? It's fairly thick timber with random clear cuts and plan on hunting the ridges up to 4500 ft. elevation Spot and Stalk.

Chiwawa during modern rifle – my advice is stay safe, wear lots of orange.

Certainly Will CP.. Have you hunted Chiwawa and had success?

I've been hunting there my whole life and have never had a problem with anyone, but there can be quite a few hunters for sure, so stick to your private property if you're seeing signs of animals. The big boys will still be up high until the snows come, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few nice resident bucks around. Be patient, and stick to your plan. There's a lot of ground to cover in the Chiwawa. Most of the areas that can be accessed by road hunters are going to be swarmed, so I'd say your private property is somewhat of a golden ticket. I've seen huge bucks in the flats around that area over the years during the hot weather, so you'll probably have an opportunity if you work at it just right. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info Sean! Best of luck to you as well this season

I'm staying close to the river

It sounds like you will either be hunting the lower end of Round Mountain (west of WA 207) or Natapoc Ridge east of 207. Those spots can get good when there is enough snow to push the migratory deer off the high mountains. Don't expect to see many, if any, hunters in your spot. There are plenty of local bucks so have fun. Send in a hunting report.

Cool timber - not a bad idea!
Mule racks - I think your right on that as I did my scouting heading northeast from HWY 2 towards Natapoc Ridge 3 miles in. Good to hear on the hunter situation and local bucks! Will send in a report for sure
Best of luck to you guys as well!

There are plenty of hunters on Round Mountain and Natapoc. You won't be alone.

Hi, was in,out of this area,6 doe's , a couple of 2x2. creek bottom's. very little sign up.Today was fog up top.Going to the river up toward Trinity tomorrow.Looking for a 4x5 I saw last week.!

Been an abnormally slow year around these areas in my opinion. Lots more hunting pressure than normal as well. Hoping this week when the weekend warriors head home and we get some more of this weather things get back to normal. Good luck gentlemen

The weather and the hunters have all pushed the deer into the thick stuff. We had a good Opening Morning (I shot a 3pt and our party missed a shot on an ok 4pt). Ever since then, it's been nothing but the occasional group of does or the lone spike. The high winds and hot weather are really keeping them hunkered in, even in the middle of the week with fewer hunters around. I'm headed back out this afternoon to guide for my dad and my uncle. Hopefully we can get another one down before the weekend warriors show up for Rd 2. Good luck guys.

Thanks for the update Sean, I hear ya on the weather and only seeing groups of does. I actually decided to give Eagle Creek and West Van Creek a shot today and and tomorrow before the weekend warriors since they have recently logged up there in the Swakane Unit. Best of luck to you and the 6 days we have left!
