Title: I need MATH help. (Big spreads)
Post by: boneaddict on January 17, 2009, 05:58:53 PM
I practically majored in this in college.  Its either been 1 too many beers(in college) or the fact I have a slumber party going on with 4 (seems like at least 20) gigly girls and loud dance music. LOL

I need to solve for Z

y equals 22inches which is also equal to 48 units
Z=75 units

Is this right?
22inches = 48x
x=.45833
75 (.458)= 34.37 inches

Yes thats right. X is the conversion ratio from units to inches.

Did you try your math against a smaller buck to see how it works out?

Very nice pic by the way.

You sayin thats a 34+ wide mulie? You don't see alot of those anymore.

That's what I got.

Z=75*22/48=34.375

Check it with a 20 inch ear width.
Title: Re: I need MATH help.
Post by: lazydrifter on January 17, 2009, 06:30:17 PM
there is an easier way. 20 inches from tip of ear to tip of ear. and he is sticking out 7 inches on each side. So,    20 +7+7=34.

31.25 Bucklucky if its 20.    My 33+ inch buck is 24 ear to ear as is my BIGUCKDOWN deer and so is my Idaho buck from a couple.  My benchleg is 22.  I figured 22 is pretty conservative on this fellow.

Are the ears set right ? Most muleys I have mounted are right around 20 . Or were those measured on the deer itself??  That is something I need to measure next time I get some bucks in is ear widths eith the ears alert.

I just cont see 34? Not trying to argue or nothing, you know bwtter than me thats for sure on Muleys! I think I said 29 before, but looks like a definate 31. Id go 31 that way if I was shooting him I'd be happier when I put a tape on him at 34  :chuckle:

Nice buck, the math looks correct didn't run the numbers but it looks correct. Just solve for X. Since it is 48x that is taking 48 and multiplying it by x, so get x by it self by dividing 48 out on both sides. That will make x by itself on one side because they will cancel leaving the otherside with a number just over .5 (no calc on hand). Once you have that substitute it back in for z and multiply the two numbers and bingo you have your answer. Glad you graduated high school and don't have to listen to me...  :chuckle:

Interesting enough.....with Sliders deer, and I need to look at some other pics to try it on.  His ears are really pinned forward.  If its 20 inches with them pinned really forward on the right side.....

20/26= .7692
.7692(49)= 37.69

A true 38 inch monster.

If it was more typical of a large mulie, at 21 inches......
21/26(49) equals a whopping       39.5 inches

23 is average for a large muledeer  if they are attentive BUT not pinned completely forward. Thats in my experience.

this is 24 ear to ear

I was going on pinned @ 20 so that make sence , I thought that bucks ears were pinned in the picture, probably not?

So 38 on Sliders buck! Damn!!

Post by: boneaddict on January 17, 2009, 07:27:12 PM
My big one is 23 pinned back so flared would be 24.....obviously just estimates in the field.  I always go 23 at attention but not pinned if that makes sense........
being conservative I picked 22.  Even with a 23 inch ear, thats 35inches.......Even conservative with Sliders buck WOW....  Great bucks for this state.

Here is another one. I had guessed 26. I gave him 21 inches pinned.
21/72=.291666666666
.2916666(90)= 26.25

20/72=  multiplied by comes to 25 inches.

most mule deer I've shot or have been around end up right at 24" between ear tips.  White tail are usually 18"
math on the other hand...that's what a calculator is for.   :o

What is the general equation. Sounds like it is usually pretty close. I would like to be able to use it to help field judge an animal.

Out in th ewoods figure 23 as your average ears relaxed or slight attention.  Deer hears something and puts head up and listens.  Deer is intent on you they "pinn down to under that usually.  I would go 21 average for that.  If you want to go conservative and be surprised when the deer is on the ground, go 22 and 20.   Thats the tool to use while out in the woods.  THIS METHOD really only be used to measure photos.  You have to have a fixed reference.  You can then extrapolate once you have squared the antlers and figured out their outside spread with a square.  I have about 12 deer mounts so I am going to measure a couple other items, such as total ear length(one ear), distance between eyes, etc. to see if I come up with a more concrete variable.  On the most part almost all of my racks are 24.  I'm going to tease CHarlie....he's been measuring too many blacktails.  I think 20 is oftly short for the average big Mulie.

Tease away Bone  :chuckle:

I did just check a whitetail I have pinned and its 14 1/2 . The pinned blacktail I have  is 15 1/2 and has 6 3/4 inch ears. My Mule deer, granted its a small buck is at 18 not pinned but one ear had about an inch ripped off of it and that ear is back abit, his good ear is 8 inches long. So he would have been right about 20 tending not pinned. The blacktail and whitetail ears are earliners with butts so they are set correctly for a good pinned measurement. I wish I had some muleys for good measurements. Seems like most muleys I mount have 8-8 1/2 inch ear lengths measured like your going to order liners for them.

I still think hes 31  :chuckle:.........just teasin  ;)

See , this thread has done me some good, Ive gone up at least  :chuckle:

I went back and checked head widths on the big muleys I have done. Now these are measurements done off the head itself before they were caped. This is measured usind calipers and the widest head was at 6 1/4 at the upper brow.

whats the average.

That buck was eastern washington, by colville I think. That is a dead measurement too so might add 1/2 inch to that. Bout 6 3/4 on a heavy head I would say. I'll go back and look through some more recors too see what other measurements I have.

The widest part just above the eye. If I knew how to do that square thing on the computer I would use it to see waht the differance is between the and then move it over to the pinned ears on that 26 inch buck picture. That would get it pretty close so you know the width of the ear pinned which looks close to 6 3/4 by measuring my screan. ?

Excellent post. Should really help in field judging bucks in the future. I am a Professional Land Surveyor and I agree with others, thats what calculators and computers are for. I suck at math! :chuckle:

I'll get to it when I can on my laptop (meaning when I am not at work and can see the pic and the Mrs. isn't standing there with a stopwatch making sure the computer doesn't get more attention than she does squared.)
