Title: Deer near Wauconda?
Post by: highhunter on January 18, 2009, 10:07:57 AM
My family has just acquired 200 acres north of Wauconda near Lake Bonaparte. I have never even been to that part of the state but the photo's from the agent show that it is a mix of open grass/sage, aspen stands, and ponderosa pine strips, bordering National Forest. My bro and I are meeting with a biologist on the property in spring to come up with a QDM plan and implement habitat enhancement projects. Are any big muleys ever take or seen in that part of the state? I have o idea what's available but I bird, deer, elk hunt, as well as fish for anything that swims. Any suggestions or opinions? Pm's are more than welcome.

You have a gold mine, I'd say good luck but you won't need it, love that country up there.

I love the Bonaparte area! One of my favorite in the state!

Tons of grouse, rabbits, bears, and some big whitetails! Apply for the East Okanogan late whitetail permit if your a rifle hunter!

Good smallmouth fishing in the lake as well as brook trout.....

Awesome Brookies (1-3#), very respectable rainbows (4-8#), but way too many little smallmouth in there (-1#) I have caught them up to 4#, but I like catching the Mackinaw (6-17#!) lots of whitetail, bear and mulies in area and as I stated before Moose.

Very good area.  We turn northeast at Waucanda and go up the Torado Creek rd till we hit Nicholsen creek rd. That's where we stay during Deer season but most of our hunting is up in Curlew. Waucanda's a hopping town.  One building. It's the store, post office, gas station, restaurant, bar, and whatever else happens there.  I will eventually wind up living in that area.  I call it God's country.

There are some decent mulies there. Some very nice whitetails too. The Native Americans also have learned which roads to hunt from over there

Thanks for the info guys. The property is a couple miles east of Bonaparte Lake up on the ridge. I've never taken a good whitetail and it's at the top of my "wish list." Hopefully I can post a pick from the property this next fall!

If ya get tired of the action at Waucanda, you can always try the night life in Bodie :IBCOOL: :chuckle:
Or stop by our camp down the road if we're around the campfire.

My brother has property on the Toroda Creek Rd, and a few other places.  We camp just east of Bodie, and hunt that area.  Made a hunt from the top of Bodie Mt. this year....lot of country.

I know a realtor in that area who hunted a friends private land over the years and took a: 31, 32 and 34" muley. Saw photo's and the fresh cape and head of the 28" another fellow realtor took from a different parcel. They can get big over there and yes I've seen pickup loads of deer in back of the "road hunters" pickups (12 one time). The bigger deer are savvy from all the road hunter's, you will not find them by the roads. I had three opportunity's at mature muley's over many years of hunting over there and all were 2-3 miles off the nearest road.

my Grandpa has property off of Nicholsen Creek Rd. as well.  we didn't do to good this year the number of hunters not wearing orange is going up and the number of quality bucks is going down where we hunt.

Yes I'm a teacher at Curlew. This is my 5th year at the school I teach science and math. In regaurds to the Nicolson rd  area being not as good hunting its because of all the new mine traffic. I hunt private land in that general vicinity and we still get a few goods one out of it every year.
