Title: SnoCo / Everett Area bowhunters?
Post by: Bow_mon on October 18, 2015, 09:35:16 AM
Hello.

I am in search of a compound bowhunting partner in the SnoCo area to chase deer up in the Cascades between Darrington/Oso & Granite Falls for day trips and more.

I am a native Washingtonian who has grown up all over this state. I’ve backpacked and camped through out this wild state and have recently taken up bowhunting. I come from a family who doesn’t hunt so this is all adult onset for me. I don’t have elders who have taught me the ways to track, stalk and ultimately dress an animal. I am 41 y/o and in good shape & live in Everett. I ran the Seattle R&R half marathon this year, Tough Mudder, GoRuck, I lift weights and am active in Crossfit 3x/week. I’m married with two kids so my time away from my family is difficult to make happen and when I am away what ever I’m doing I also take seriously. Especially when I’m hunting as I’m looking to bring home meat for my freezer and my family. I’m not going into the woods to sit in a blind, drink a ton of beer or smoke a bunch of weed.

I’m a fan of Steven Rinella, Cameron Hanes, Donnie Vincent, Tovar Cerulli and Hank Shaw.

I’m really looking to do some day trips out into the Cascades to hunt blacktail deer as it’s easier for me to get day pass than overnights at this time since my children are pretty young. With that said, if we gel and hunt well together then I also dream of high country backpacking hunts. I’ve got another group of friends that i’ve done some bowhunting with, but they are more about the whole wall tent experience and using that as a base camp. Which is cool too but I also would like to try a more of a backpacking/hunt trip sometime in the future.

Going forward, if your interested I think it would be wise to exchange a few emails, perhaps meet up for a burger and a pint and get to know each other, what our collective skills are, etc. and then perhaps a scouting trip before we head into the woods to actually hunt.

If this resonates with you and your interested hit me up and lets chat.

Might be too late for me this season, but I'd be interested in doing some off season scouting for next year.

I'm just outside of Monroe and just started hunting blacktails this year.  I have a lot of experience archery hunting whitetails and mule deer, but am spending a lot of time out in the field, learning what I can.  I'm in.  Sounds like we could put together a Snohomish County group and share knowledge!

I'd be interested in a get together as well if time allows. Might be cool to meet at the 3D shoot in February at the Granite Falls Sportsmens club. Shoot a round then go grab a burger and a cold pop.

I'd be game for that Jackelope.  I checked the GFSC website and didn't see a shoot scheduled for February.  There is one in late March.  Are you a member there?

Hi guys I'm new to bow hunting. This is my second season hunting and first with a bow. I'd be interested in joining a group and learning what I can. I'm in the Mukilteo area.

D-Rock,
Although I've been bow hunting for 20+ years, I've never gone to a 3D shoot.  I understand a bit about them, but regarding the targets, are the yardages known or are guys using rangefinders, or are the ranges estimated by each shooter?  How many stations are there?
I definitely plan on going, getting some shooting in, and learning about the club.  Kenmore is a bit far for me and I'd like something closer and less of a traffic hassle!

Haven't shot my bow in 2 years.
Calendar is miraculously open for that weekend. I'd be interested in the 3D shoot as well.

back to the OP - I have never bow hunted, YET so I am no use at this time   Hope you find some good guys/gals to hunt with

Well Widgeondeke,
If we do form some sort of informal group to explore BT hunting with a bow, I don't think there would be any requirements.
Have you been hunting waterfowl Widgeondeke?  If so, where do you hunt?

I actually took these season off from waterfowl, but I am a public land hunter 95% of the time.  typically I hit Skagit HQ, Welts property near Edison and the "quality hunt" spots up North.

If you're shooting as a registered shooter for score, no rangefinders are allowed. Yardages are not posted.  I believe the shoots that D-Rock puts on at Granite Falls are usually fun shoots, so rangefinders are allowed as long as you're not a registered shooter.
Don't know how many targets there are, other than a bunch. Probably 20-30 I'd guess??

Why don't we start at the 3D shoot in Granite Falls?  That is, unless someone want's to get together beforehand for a bit to eat and trading stories.
Yankee, are you from the NE?

Yep, born and raised in New Hampshire.  I've been living out west (Utah and then WA) since '96.

Hey Scott- I've got a membership to Kenmore and shoot there regularly.  Let me know if you'd like to hit the range some time.

Frank,
Thanks for bumping this thread!  I think some posters were planning on going to the 3D shoot at Granite Falls next weekend, but it's been a while since anyone posted on this thread, so I'm not sure what the plan is at this point.

Is anyone still keeping tabs on this thread going to the Granite Falls shoot next week?  If so, what day and time?  Perhaps a bunch of us can still meet and grab a bite to eat after shooting.

I'll have to get my bow out and adjust my sights for field points and do a little practicing.

Dave

It sounds like there are quite a few folks interested in getting together, but not necessarily at the shoot in Granite Falls this weekend.  I'm all for getting together for a bite to eat somewhere either on a weekend or during the week.

I live near Monroe, and I'm guessing anywhere along I5 in the Everett/Marysville area would be fairly simple for a group to meet, perhaps even in Snohomish if there is a good tavern/restaurant there.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where to meet?  We can plan it for a few weeks out from now at the earliest, trade some hunting stories, show some pictures, and try to figure out where to get after some good bucks!

Also, chime in with what time of week works best!

Well, we have a few responses.  Anyone favor a particular night of the week, weekend, etc?  If I don't get any feedback regarding day of week or time, I'll just schedule for some weeknight and pick a place and let you guys know.

I figure I'll call ahead and see if we can get a table for 10 or so, and we'll just eat and some will drink and we'll share stories.  I'm thinking the week of March 7th will give us some time to plan, and it's the week after the MDF meeting in Issaquah.

So far, I've got specific interest from:
Jackelope
jkthomps
h20hunter
frankmrf
DaveMonti

Other folks interested in a get together:
yankee
frankmrf
RudyP
Bow_mon (OP)

I sent an e-mail to the Skookum Brewery inquiring about reserving a table for 6 PM on Saturday, March 12th. I think this gives some of us some time between the Sammamish MDF meeting on March 1st and our social gathering.  I'll let you know what I hear from the brewery.  I suspect this will be the date and time.

Thanks!

I know it's kinda late.  Here's another place to consider if Skookum doesn't work for some reason.  I haven't been there yet, but from the sounds of it I believe it to be a good place.  Anyplace that allows dogs in is a step up in my book.  That's part of the reason previously we've met up at Skookum.

I'll send out a reminder the week of March 1, and hopefully get a head count.  Looking forward to it!

For those of you who cannot make this get together like my I would also share that Silver arrow bowmen in Mount Vernon I5 exit 224 is having a 3D march 19-20th. Not too far away since we are only a couple of miles off the freeway. I will be there and we put on a pretty good shoot.

Thanks Goldeneye!
I did hear from Skookum.  No need for reservations, but I'll call them a few days ahead with a count.

Here's the info:

Date:     Saturday March 12th
Time:     6:00 PM
Place:    Skookum Brewery
Address:   17925A 59th Ave NE
                 Arlington, WA 98223

Bring your stories, pictures, and questions!
Although this will be a "meeting" of Everett Area Bowhunters, anyone is welcome!

The website for Skookum Brewery is
skookumbrewery.com

I'll send out a reminder the week of March 1, and hopefully get a head count.  Looking forward to it!

Dave
Is this still the plan?

The plan remains the same.  I have been flat on my back for the last 6 days with the worst flu I've ever had.  Just now getting on my feet, but still a long way from being better.
Skookum said there is no problem accomodating group of 10 (my estimate) but we may want to call a day or two and they will put some tables together for us.

The place closes at 9, I believe, so getting there at 6 gives us plenty of time.

No problem.  It is limited to public use for rifle and pistol but the Monday night shoot is quite popular with bow hunters because of the access, range use, and two 2alk through courses. They do have events posted online open to the public from bullseye pistol to the 500 yard rang events.

Not exactly,  public is welcome to shoot scheduled events.

Correct, they can join competitive events and scheduled practices when held as well.  Thanks for keeping me in line H20...   ;)

Rifle and pistol ranges are not open to the general public except for hunter sight-in weekends in September and October. We usually refer public target shooting to the Kenmore Gun Range located in Bothell, WA or Everett Sportsman's Club on Ebey Island, Everett WA.

All competitive events and practice schedules on the Range Calendar are open to non-members and the general public. NRA membership is required to nationally register your competitive scores. NRA membership is recommended, but not required for practice times.

Good Morning!

I am preparing to move to Seattle next weekend from Baltimore. I just started bowhunting this past season here in Maryland, Ohio, and Kentucky. I am looking forward to the challenge that Washington will bring but am looking to get some insight into where I should start out there. Also am interested in an experienced hunting partner who can help show me the ropes and is willing to hep me learn more as I grow as a hunter. Based on the posts on this thread, I thought this would be a good place to start and reach out in this forum.

Welcome Bowhunter35!
Where in the Seattle area are you going to reside?  I made the move from the Philly area about 8 years ago.  I'm happy with this area of the country, but WA hunting regulations and permitting just flat out sucks.
As far as deer hunting, you'll have to let us know what species you want to hunt.  On the West side (west of the Cascades), there are Blacktail.  On the East side of the state, you'll find Mule Deer and Whitetails.  All have different techniques.  The most challenging will be hunting Blacktails.  However, there are places to hunt for BTs within an hour+ of Seattle.   If you decide to hunt Muleys or Whitetails, you'll have a good drive from Seattle to get to them.  There's also elk to hunt, but you'd better be in good shape!
Look us up when you get out here and we'll probably have another get together.  It's really just social, telling stories, and talking about hunting a bit.

Another thing that I suggest is to go to the Snoqualmie Chapter Mule Deer Foundation Banquet on June 4th.  It's about 15 miles East of Seattle on I90 in the town of Issaquah.  Send me a PM and I'll get you some info on it.
As for the other "members" of this Exclusive Snohomish County Bowhunters Club, I expect you all to be at the Snoqualmie MDF banquet!!!

Thanks Dave! I'm going to be in Queen Anne for a month and then trying to figure out where to move to once temp housing is up. Any suggestions there? Would like to be relatively decent drive to downtown for my wife.

I wanted to get on some Black Tail and work my way up to Elk. I am in pretty good shape but know that Elk hunting is a beast and can always be in better shape, that's for sure.

I will definitely be interested in the banquet. The more I can learn and talk to more experienced hunters, the better I'll become as well!

Did this group die?

We only had one social event planned, mainly to get some Snohomish County bowhunters together to share stories, maybe talk about different places to hunt.  Everyone seemed to have a good time at the event, a gathering at a brewery on a Saturday early evening.  I didn't attend as I had the flu that week!

I'm sure folks would like to get together again, but I'm not sure how many would be able to make it in summertime!  Sound off if you want to get together one of these days and we'll try to plan something.

Ad D-Rock said, there's a shoot at Granite Falls on July 16th and 17th.  We could plan something in the afternoon or evening after the shoot for those attending and others who want to join.  Otherwise, we'll pick a date that works for all of us.  If we wait too long, we'll be into the archery deer and elk seasons, so chime in folks!

To all those who went to the previous gathering, I am gauging interest in another get together on JULY 9th, late afternoon or early evening!  Please chime in if you are interested and are not on vacation!!!

We will get together in the Everett/Marysville area for a few hours to tell stories, pictures, and discuss bowhunting!

Please reply by this weekend if you're in!

Now why would you leave Montana to come to Washington?!?

Summer is a busy time.  Hopefully we will be able to schedule a get together for the Snohomish County folks that want to BS and share stories and tactics.  There hasn't been much interest recently, but perhaps we can try to get together during one of the upcoming weekends before the archery seasons get going.

When I find out what my next few weekends look like, I'll check on interest.  Anyone can chime in with their interest and availability in the next few weekends in August.

Silver Arrow Bowmen is having its Summer Fest 3D shoot. Aug 13-14 I will be there both days and likely be setting it up as well.  The City Council will be walking the course a few days afterward. We could really use the help on FB by liking and sharing the event.  We are still in the middle of "Educating" the mayors office and City Council about the Club.

Special T,
If I'm in town, I'd love to come by the shoot and help out or participate in any way I can.  I think it's a great way to support the sport and the challenges the club is facing.  At this point, I'm not sure if I'm going to be in town or out on a scouting weekend, and my bow is in "mid setup" after I made some changes, but even if I'm not ready to participate, I'll try to come by and check it out and support the club.

Setup takes place starting at 9am friday the 12th at the club. When we are done you are free to shoot the course if you help setup.

I know its Bear hunting season which is why the Club needs all the FB help it can get. For those that cant come but want to help that can make the most impact in our current struggle with the city. I will be calling out for action when we need it.

Hey Rudy,
Congrats on the new job!  It's been a busy summer and now it's hunting season for a few months!
I'm prepping for a trip to Montana in a few weeks, then some WA deer hunting.  Maybe some grouse hunting in there somewhere, and some waterfowl later in the year.
I hope everyone gets a chance to go out and get hunting!

Dave
