Title: 2015 Blacktail thread
Post by: trophyhunt on October 18, 2015, 04:47:51 PM
Can this be sticky posted?  If there is already one, please delete.  I thought it would be great to have a blacktail only thread, lets see them.  Good luck guys.

I'm all for it,plus tells us what time was it ,when you made the kill.so we all can be more alert.
           What was the weather pattern?
clear cut or timber
  ferns and maples

Have not shot one yet this year, but seems the deer love rain... Seems to bring them out during the day. West Side at least.

My favorite part of the story "drives INTO clearcut, shoots monster blacktail, drags it DOWNHILL, heads back home.."

Some guys have all the luck.

I am sure hoping see can spank a nice one ..she has improved dramatically this year .. she can spot them better and she sure knows how to run her rifle ...good luck to the rest of you !!  I really hope we can put a few more pigs on this thread !!   Shoot straight and be safe !!

Found one I wanted tonight. 426 yards. Had to wait for the 3 pt that I was gonna shoot to stand up and start fighting with this guy. Waited over an hour with crosshairs on the tree he was behind. This 4 was bedded behind some Doug firs and I couldn't see him until the 3 pissed him off. They got done sparring and he turned around made it out of the firs and I dropped the hammer. Nicer than I expected. Good buddy came and helped quarter, cape, and pack out to the truck. I'd still be there packing if it wasn't for him. Now next week it's time for the wife to lay one down!

For me every deer is a blessing! I was more than happy to put this one down and in the freezer. I was returning from the timber back to a logging road and he was watching from inside the timber on the other side. You ever have the feeling you were being watched? it was quartering to me steeply, took kind of a front and down shot. I found a spray of blood at the impact site but nothing around. Those TSXs don't hardly put any blood on the ground but they sure do kill them dead. Found him about 15y away exploded heart and shattered scapula.

For B&C a mule deer has to have a min of 180, and B Tail has to have a min of 125. So id say 125 in.

Here is my Blacktail from last Fri. Finally caught him slipping up at 10am when he followed a doe into an opening about 150yds away. Sorry no great pictures, bad part about being solo. A little weather coming, it should be a good end to the modern season for those who still have tags!

Took this beautiful buck this morning! It was an excellent season. Covered a lot of ground, found some good areas and ended up coming out yesterday with a couple of old sheds (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F26%2Ffefe5b445111fe71b03e43bbb671e947.jpg&hash=a821e6c726bcc4973ac9980a7f41ab15b4a8bc6b)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F26%2F50405d3a53854088d3305f7fabcac9bc.jpg&hash=d75d036ea0e4caabd1fb90e398fc313e087f72cc)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F26%2F5ddcd8aeeb2172315cf5dedf8382296f.jpg&hash=615b28a765242ee76c1b629e7684021fca97082c)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F26%2F4f897c472e058ce3cea9bcbd6c3d2fed.jpg&hash=04de9ebe1cd66e56831ee7b50c22ba2f24ab144f)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F26%2F46a491f67917bffa3712f5a103187d09.jpg&hash=b7559b53dcb866411bd8352f41ae87c5dd312dff)

Took this guy with ten minutes of light left Thursday night. Think he poked his head out of the brush just a bit to early and got lucky and caught him.

Out done by the wife again! I got my mulie last Friday and came home this weekend. Had yesterday off work to get some stuff done around the house and unpack from my hunting trip. Was taking the dogs for a walk when I noticed a buck chasing a doe in my field. After I saw what a brute he was, I called the wife and told her to get home quick because the buck might still be there. She drove the hour home and was able to put this guy down right in our field. Safe to say I didn't get much unpacking done yesterday.

Good job !!!  Good luck to the wife ...
Couldn't talk her out of this one. Only saw 3 deer in the last 3 days... Actually, it's hard to talk her out of it when your mouth is already telling her to shoot it.

Missed the second biggest buck I have ever seen before last night. Almost got physically ill.

Went back to the same spot this morning. Rattled for two minutes and this dude came in ears back all puffed up. I let the wind out of him. Has a fresh cut ear and broken eyeguard. Probably just got his but kicked by the big one.

I like big two points.

Tjv28, I think I have pictures of that buck from last year. I'll have to see if I can find them.

Got my buck 10/25. Waited for foul weather to show up in the afternoon. Walked in to a selective logging area. Waited a while. Moved little. Saw this 3 point about 100 yards away. Stalked to within 15 yards and nailed him with my 20 gauge. Not a big one but nice and tasty!

Nice buck axle... I think I saw mine last year too, hiking on the mountain. Here's a trail cam pic. He had 8" of a carbon arrow in his chest cavity. Full scarred over. Arrow looked several years old (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F10%2F30%2Ffb9dc1c0f203aed8ba0bc4c68b2f0554.jpg&hash=c8ea8fc7839b1f9508fa4f44e27f24b90a6ff955)

Yep, that's him. I'll upload a couple pics of him tonight.
He ran out in front of my car about this time last year. I almost got to tag him in an unconventional method  :chuckle:
He seemed slow but he also acted like he had a good ability to reason.
I hope you are having him mounted.

70 yard shot with about ten minutes of light left. He was leaving reprod to enter timber with salal and ferns.  He stopped broadside and looked at me for a perfect heart shot.  This is my second buck with my hand loads, first with this load so I'm very happy.  Used my Ar in 6.8 spc.

Posting this for a friend. The picture don't do this buck justice. I measured his width 18 1/4 wide, 2" diameter at the base and estimated him to be around 4-5 years old. A really beautiful buck, I wish I had taken better pictures but I was wet, cranky >:(

Ok Tjv28, let's see if I can get your buck pics to load. My son took these with his cell phone last year. He was so excited that he couldn't hold still enough to take a clear picture. This was in a neighbor's yard.
There was one here 20 years ago that was a bit bigger than this one. He had width and height that I've never seen on a BT before. His legs were uncharacteristically long too! One year there were 2 large 3 point bucks that hang around him and he made them look small. I saw that huge buck next to a full-grown doe and she looked like a fawn standing next to him. With that buck's height, I don't know how or if he managed to breed. That big buck ran across Iss-Ho rd right in front of me in '95 and I was so tempted to hit the throttle instead of the brakes  :chuckle: :chuckle: but I didn't.

So glad to see your buck in the freezer instead of dead on the side of the road like so many end up.

Yep. I watched him for a few years. This could be the year he maxed-out on antler growth. Congrats on getting him!
Get him scored when you can. Many of us are curious what the numbers will say.
If he had width across the top, he would seriously rock the scores. Not many BT bucks get racks like that.

A friend of mine found a shed antler in the woods nearby a few years back. I'm going to ask him to cough it up for a picture. It was a monster shed that had been on the ground for a while and if I remember correctly, it was not only large, but it was very heavy.
I love blacktails! Then again - I love all deer  :IBCOOL:

Serious question. Fees for liscense and tags for a Washington resident to hunt blacktails in BC?

Am I looking at an arm and a leg plus my first born?

I grew up on kodiak. I've shot a truck load of Sitka blacktails. I would like to get a blacktail from each region. I need a buck from California and BC to complete my personal quest.

I've been dying to post in this thread.  My first deer ever and an ooooold buck I've been tracking for just over three weeks.  I thought he was a piebald Whidbey Island Blacktail but it turns out, he was just gray.  He doesn't have any bottom teeth!  My wife seems to think I can finally stop being obsessed.  She doesn't get it, the obsession has only just begun!

My largest to date, 2015 Blacktail public land Halloween buck. As many know it was pouring rain and blowing in my neck of the woods!! Bucher estimated just shy of 200 lbs on the hoof from the hanging weight!

I bet. Im guessing that he will go 130 minimum theirs one larger than him less than a mile away from that spot. I haven't gotten pics of yet. I could have gotten both of them if I was carrying a rifle but it seems like theirs always a bush between us or the shot angle isn't right.
