Title: Shot this little bugger this morning
Post by: TheHunt on October 28, 2015, 05:29:10 PM
I took a day off today because of weather and the deer are in rut.  I went to leverage my Wayco permit and I found a good little area.  I rattled the little guy into 20 yards before I noticed him.  They are quiet little buggers.  Well, I gave him a 250 grain 338 bullet.  YIKES is all I can say.  The pictures are setup so you don't see the carnage.  As you can see he is pretty tiny but he will make some good pepperoni.  Oh, I also took the picture with the Bull Pac because I was asked to with the new straps, but it was so little I just dragged the little guy after I gutted it it did not take much.   :chuckle:

I am happy with him but his body is little.  Notice the front hoof in the picture.

That front shoulder got hammered by that bullet.  It was a quartering front on shot and it broke it badly...  I lost some of that meat.

Out of curiosity, why such a large caliber for blacktail?

Out of curiosity, why such a large caliber for blacktail?

I own one rifle which is a 7 mm mag.  I had it in for repairs and it took longer than expected so I did not have time to shoot it much nor get comfortable with it.  So I picked a rifle my son owns 388 RUM which I am comfortable with and I have 20 cartridges already loaded.

I was expecting to shoot a long distance and that rifle is very accurate. Well, moved into an area to see a long ways away and I started to rattle.  I was expecting something to pop out about 400 - 600 yards.  Well, smarty pants put the sneak on me and when I look over he was 20 yards looking right at me.  Opps....

Good job... Congrats!  Maybe next year he'll be laying in a big ole hole somewhere and you'll get a chance to try those straps out... once you use them you'll never go back to paracord!

St. Helens  BTW, the the rut is on...   I rattled others in but I was not ready as I did not have a good backing to make the deer not hook me.  1 out of 4 times I was busted...  I am just learning this rattling but it is very effective. I assume that it will be like bugling elk in about 5 years.  During this time of year the deer are really stupid.  The problem is that the edge areas where you know there are deer those smart animals come in when your not looking in that direction you don't think they will come in.  One I heard run in and when I looked to see him he took off.  So I am educating them but I will get it down and possibly add a few other shooters to cover the shooting zones.  With Blacktail deer loving the thick stuff you have to think about your setup.  Doing it by your self is a challenge.

My Bull Pac has shouldered some heavy loads in its time and done a good job of it.

Congrats and way to get it done.  I still have yet to rattle one in.  I kinda want to see the carnage you speak of though.
