Time flies and I am ready to go for my any moose late hunt in the Douglas. I have done as much preparation and planning as possible now it just comes down to the hunt. I am towing my trailer for my base camp and will hunt for up to 2 weeks. I have my friend Jack with with me, along with some possible help from one of the forum members on the weekend. I appreciate the advice I have gotten from several of you guys and a few locals. I am looking for a respectable mature bull and I will hunt long and hard for him.
With some hard work and a little Lady Luck I hope to be putting my cross hairs on a dandy. I know for sure I am blessed for the opportunity. Thanks for all the help and encouragement. Hunt report and pics to follow👊

Having a great time on the hunt. Passed up 2 small Bulls the first day at close range. Jumped what I believe to be a mature bull in the high country but he gave me the slip. Saw nothing in day 2. Today we got into a early morning snow storm and only saw a cougar and 2 kittens. Cut a fresh big bull in the afternoon. Tracked him into a swamp and lost him. Going back for him tomorrow. The beat goes on😁
-
Can't wait for the pic's of your masher, stay positive Bryon, you got this!! Go get'em buddy!

I'm giving it everything I got and having a blast doing it. The goal is a mature bull but I don't rule out a small bull late in the hunt. Not passing up moose meat😁
Thanks for the encouragement👍

I have a feeling tomorrow's the day ! Getsum !

Good luck!

Good Luck....Shoot a big bull.

Almost time for todays update???? Hoping for big smiles and big set of antlers .
-
Killing me here. How is it going?
-
Hope he doesn't mind me giving an update, saw a big bull yesterday but a guy in a truck spooked it off. He passed up smaller bulls as well, still at it, going to try to find the big one today. He might be done for a few days but is going back for more before the season ends, Good luck Bryon!
-
I hope he finds the one he's looking for.
-
Bryon is back at it this weekend, I sure hope he fills his tag! Go get him buddy!
-
Back at it is right. Been on moose everyday but have struggled
Finding a decent bull. Came back for 4 days to finish the season.
Passed up a probally 40 " bull. He was nice but really thin on the
Paddles. Probably a 4 yr bull. Also saw 6 cows that day. Yesterday
I passed up a paddle bull up high and a late in the day a really
Small bull up high. He was a yearling bull. Saw 7 cows that day.
Today we hit it again hard and only saw 5 cows. Couldn't
Find a bull to save my life😱 So to tomorrow is the last day
Of the hunt. Not sure how it will play out. I have hunted
Hard for 11 days and seen some awesome country and met some great guys
To hunt with. If I see a small bull I will most likely shoot it
And be happy about it. Don't really want to shoot a cow but
Don't want to rule it out. I'd rather harvest a mature cow then
A spike bull moose. Anyway no matter what happens
I am grateful to have drawn this tag. It has truley been an adventure.
I'll try to give a update to to tomorrow.
-
I have a good feeling you'll get a crack at a decent bull.

Ok gentleman. Sorry for the wait. I hunted 8 days in early November but saw only small bulls with 1 shot at a masher. The stock on the big guy was good, but we lost the bull in some heavy timber.
Once I saw what the unit held in terms of bulls, I wanted to hold out for a good one. I came back for the last 4 days to hunt Friday thru Monday. I was joined by a local guy the first 2 days, and another local guy Tom aka caseknife on the forum on Sunday and Monday. We saw 1 small bull on Friday, and a bull that was about 40". I passed on both. On Saturday, we saw another 2 bulls. One was a paddle bull, and the other a yearly. During this time we saw plenty of cows and calves which was great to see. On Sunday we couldn't find a bull to save ourselves :yike: We did however see about 4 cows and 3 calves.
Fast forward Monday. The last day of my hunt. Tom was with me, and we were joined by the Clayton and Colton Vining. They wanted to join in, and I just didn't have the heart to say no, we have plenty of help. :chuckle: We ended up going to the spot where we saw the big bull on the first hunt. We set up on a ridge, and Tom spotted a moose from about 2 miles out. We then set up the spotter and counted bulls feeding in the ceanothus. We decided to drop off Colton to do some spotting on the middle ridge. The 3 of us drove up to the high ridge to go after a good bull. We were making our way thru some heavy cover when we ran into the first bull. His paddle looked great, but he was missing his right side :yike: We then continued up the ridge when a cow blew past us moving down hill. I thought game over at that point but it was far from over  We kept creeping up the hill when Tom whispered " bull" I couldn't see the bull, so I traded places with Tom and saw the back 3/4s of him. I only saw a flash of his antler and decided to take a the shot. I took a quick 70 yard shot. He bolted and we started tracking him. We didn't find any blood off the bat. I knew I hit him but my mind was paying games with me. :bash: Within a couple of minutes we caught up with him and he was standing dead on his feet. I put him down with 2 more quick shots at 10 feet. To say I was elated is an understatement :IBCOOL: We all did some high 5s and took some good pics. Colton joined us and we started processing the moose. I shot him at 9:15 am and we were back at the truck at 230pm. If I had it to do again I wouldn't change a thing.
During my hunt I made some great friends, saw some beautiful country and made some great memories. I am thankful for all the help I have gotten from people on the forum. You all know who you are.
I truly wish everyone could draw this tag once in their lifetime to have the great experience that I had. I am thankful to God for keeping us all safe and during the time and making it all possible in the first place.
Thanks
Bryan

Congrats! God I miss moose meat. I just moved here last year and noticed moose are on a draw system, is this a lottery luck or based off of points?

Bulls are OIL tags, and yes many points are typically required to draw.

A couple years' worth of meat, and a lifetime of memories. Congratulations. You earned it.
-
Nice one.
-
What a fantastic hunt, congratulations Bryan!
-
Very nice bull! and it sounds like a lot of good memories!
-
Bryan, I know you were hoping to shoot a monster (and don't we all), but that is a good bull and certainly nothing wrong with that one. The late hunt can be a tougher hunt, good job taking it down to the wire for a successful ending. You will cherish those memories forever and you are going to love the meat. Congratulations for a job well done!
-
I've been checking in twice a day hoping to see a successful report. Great job, nice Moose. Way to gut it out.
-
Nice Bullwinkle!
-
Congrats Bryan! Well deserved. How did you like the mainframe pack? It's no bullpac but I really enjoy it's size (I hauled 105lbs and it preformed well).
-
Fine bull and no better freezer larder stock!
-
Well done and congratulations!
-
Good looking mature bull, way to really utilize the tag.

Congrats again Bryon, you worked your butt off and ended up with a very nice bull. Lot's of pressure on special permits and you served it well, especially being a OIL tag. Good job!!
-
Congrats Bryan, I'm glad is all came together for you. Nice bull.
