Title: Flip up or raised scope mount for Winchester model 70
Post by: TriggerMike on November 01, 2015, 06:34:36 PM
I'm looking for either a flip up or some type of high mounted scope rings that will allow me to use my scope but still be able to use the iron sights if I want without having to take the scope off. The rifle is a post 64 model 70. Any suggestions? I'm not finding anything on Google but my buddy has his grandpa's old rifle and it has a scope mount that flips off to the side that allows him to use his iron sights when needed. Not sure what the rifle is though.

I have a friend that has some Leupold Quick Release mounts and they seem to work pretty well for him.  I think he's had them for 20+ years now, on the same rifle.  Depending on where your rifles rear sight is, something like this may not be tall enough to clear it though.

Maybe for some, that see through stuff works ok but when you start getting the scope that high you end up lifting your head up off the stock a bit to see through the ocular.  I like a good solid cheek weld so tall rings/mounts don't work for me.

I'm not sure there's a "good" way to achieve using both, iron sights and scope at the same time without removing the scope.

Maybe take a look at a scope with very low magnification and see if that'll work for you without using the iron sights at all.

No need the remove the scope....if you are okay with the extra height:

see through rings....yuck!

i'd go with some quality quick detach rings if you're set on being able to use your iron sights.

Thanks for the info guys. Has anyone ever seen the flip up style mount? Basically you flip the scope out of the way by doing a "rolling" motion off to the side. I know they exist (at least at one point in time they did) but I'm not sure who makes it and if they're still around. This would be a question for you older guys most likely.

Weaver used to make some that tipped off to the side, my dad had them on his Remington 760.

 :yeah:

My Uncle had a set on his Win 70, but that was back in the 70's when he got those...

Did a quick search and found this:

My dad's Browning BAR has that type of scope mount. It's been on there as long as I can remember, so at least 35 years. I don't recall there ever being any issues with it, although I don't believe he ever flipped the scope out of the way to use the open sights.

I think the "ironsighters" are the biggest waste of money out there.   I've hunted with scopes since 1967 and never had one fail.     I did have three real cheap ones that had issues.  Two had the inside knocked loose and actually I think that's the only issues I've had.   I think if one gets a new scope free with purchase that it should be an indication of what quality to expect.   For name scopes, Burris, Bushnell, Leopold, Weaver and I forget what other models I have, none have ever had issues.

If you don't like scopes then get a peep sight.  It's about the fastest out there but you will have issues with it for light gathering at dusk and dawn.

I have one of the Weaver 1" pivot/hinge/tip off mounts on a Remington 760 30-06.  They are a neat mount.  Mine has been on the gun since I bought it in 1978.

If you do a Google image search for Weaver pivoting scope mount, you will see lots of photos.  There do appear to be other companies that make something similar.

I had to use mine on my second bear.  The scope was so fogged up from being under my jacket in the rain on my stand, that when the bear came in, minutes before dark, I could not use it.  Tipped off the scope and Boom, BBD at 5 yards.
