No elk seen....except a few dead spikes for me. My brother saw a cow and a elk butt on day two, we were glassing opposite sides of a ridge. We have been all over the Umtanum, wore out two pair of binoculars. Nothing. Folks say the elk will show any day. Hope so. Any guides on here wanna take this guy after a bull? :chuckle: I feel pretty defeated at this point.

Dive down into the hole off frost mountain. Always elk in there
-
Get down in those dark steep timber holes and you find what you seek......

Cousin shot a nice 6pt on Saturday.

Going back to camp in the morning, had some kid stuff to tend to today. Thanks for all the tips, and wish me luck!!

We have been hunting up there as well for a bull. We spent last Sunday through Sunday. We say 4 cows and a calf in the Manastash last Thursday. 1 spike umptanum mid day Friday (passed). Had a 6x6 run in front of the truck opening day of spike season. He was moving fast and hit the deep thick brush. Some younger kids pushed him out of the canyon up across the road. We spent 5 hours looking for him and never saw him again. We were in the umptanum. We went home for a break and heading back over tonight to try and fill a bull permit and cow permit. We are shooting anything that moves come tomorrow morning. We have a permit for all...

Just because you have permits for stuff doesn't mean anybody can just shoot at anything.

Great bull, congrats to the hunter. I'm home for today. Hunted hard all day yesterday, no elk sightings. Not sure about Friday, gonna hit it again Saturday. Down to the wire. I am surprised to say my brain is wearing out much more than my body. I feel pretty good physically, other than normal aches and pains associated with elk hunting. So many days with out even a sighting is hurting me between the ears. Not use to this. I am sure seeing some beautiful country though.

You'll find one. It seems like some of my best hunts were the hard ones. Best of luck.

We have hunted the Manastash side for the last 2 days, we filled our cow tag tonite..we saw 8 big bulls yesterday and 6 more today. They are definitely moving. Unfortunately no spikes. We will try tomorrow for that spike! Only wish I had a bull tag!!
-
Wow....back at it tomorrow....hope some move in. Down to the wire!!

Just because you have permits for stuff doesn't mean anybody can just shoot at anything.
We have any bull and cow permits. So any elk that moves gets shot.

If they got tags for the ones they shoot standing still with a clear line of sight why not?

No challenge if they're not moving.

Lol...that's been the problem. Everything we have seen has been running, running, and is probably still running. Lots of pressure. Should be a fun weekend.

I don't think I'd be picky or complaining if I had a tag that expires in days and I'm having a challenging or difficult time filling it and a gimme presented itself. :dunno: they put the time in looking and why not take an easy shot if it's legal and there :dunno:

Party hunting, group hunting, what's the difference?
-
Platt, I believe party hunting is doesnt matter who shoots what as long as someone has a tag for it. :twocents:

Our party consists of 2 people. My 69 year old father and I. We hunt within a 100 yards of each other. Typically side by side, as we walk a lot of old spur roads together. If he shoots a cow and I have a permit; I will tag it and vise versa. You act like a hypocrite coming in here trying to act like you follow the rules by the book. Maybe we should open up the discussion to all your "shoot, shovel, and shut up" posts in the wolf topics. Nearly every hunter I know works together to fill permits. Its not like he is at home on the couch and I am out filling his permit on the other side of the state. I don't believe in that. If we are out there putting in the work "together" and we get meat on the ground; absolutely we will help each other. SMH

Agreed...
I turned in a poacher a few years ago. My 21 quality elk points mean nothing.

Tagging an animal with someone else's tag :chuckle: "party hunting" :chuckle:

Not sure if this is the right place to post this :chuckle: .....but....my tag, hunting solo most of the time, in a non-party way, went unfilled. Not one elk spotted in 2 weeks of hunting. I need to change my name from "C-Money" to " Vegetarian". Elk did come into the area I hunted. Looked like most camps had filled cow tags, and a I saw 2 branch bulls on displays in a couple camps. By Saturday afternoon, my body was tired. Pulled out Sunday afternoon to prep for work. Felt pretty good while putting in some Stick & Puck time at the ice rink with my son & niece, all the while wishing I have stuck it out one more afternoon. Most areas I walked appeared to have fresh elk activity by the end of the 2nd week. Kinda sick my bull points are gone. For now, my dream for a branch bull is still just a dream. I'm looking forward to being back with the crazys in the Colockum next year, I at least I usually see some branch antlered eye candy in there a few times a season. The Observatory tag is a good one, but you better hope winter comes early in the high county. It would have been an advantage hunting with a camp of 10 or 20 hunters going in 10 or 20 directions, gathering info to help plan the next days hunt. That said, A Huge THANK YOU to all my friends here at Hunting Washington who were kind enough to send me a PM with advice. All the info was very helpful, and very appreciated. I will end by saying, each elk, or deer, you or your family & friends are able to put in the freezer is very special. Never take it for granted, soak in the moment, and always thank God for animal.
