A couple years ago the Nisqually Refuge enacted a 25 shell limit on their property open to hunting. Starting this year, the WDFW has done the same at Nisqually on their lands open to hunting. Just wanted to share.

Should be nationwide for waterfowl IMO.
-
Only 25? Really??
I'd just be getting warmed up.......
-
15 would be even better IMO. :)

After what I have been seeing this year. I think I could agree with BT on the 25 shell limits on public land. I saw several groups this weekend never drop a bird inside the 70 yard mark. Then fire another 5-6 shells when they did wing one and it hit the water at 80 yards. I kept watching the current carry there birds off. An untrained dog and guys that couldn't get out far enough with waders to retrieve there birds. It was bad. Even worse watching an entire group of guys unload on snows at 125 yards per my range finder.

I see similar things every time I go hunting. That or the guys that call non stop.

Seriously more regulations. Ever drop a bird that other people don't shoot at cause they think it's too high. It's a great feeling.
-
Do people really bring more than a box of shells anyway? :dunno:
I've never felt the need to bring that much ammo.
-
I'm usually a 75-100 shells a day kind of guy especially if hunting from a boat. Always better to have too many shells than not enough. Also sometimes you have to shoot a cripple 5 times on the water.
-
I would have to say you should learn how to waterfowl hunt!!! Guys like you that mess up duck hunting!!! Take up tennis!!!! 75-100 rounds to kill a limit!! Wow!!!
-
I carry 50 to 100 on every hunt. I have never used anywhere near that many. I do t like the idea of punishing guys that can't shoot.

Not sure id ever be in favor of a shell limit. What is the benefit, just decrease shooting? Ive never hunted an area with the restriction so im curious to know.

I have a little trailer on the back of my super mag hauler just for the case of Black Cloud Ts. I use one of those wet swabs for the barrels like they use on the ship cannons. Raining death, they call me.

I think the reason behind a shell limit is to reduce skybusting. If you are limited on the amount of shells, you are likely to wait for the birds to be a little closer before you start blasting away. :twocents:

Those 7.5 shot dove loads work pretty good on dispatching cripples. Holy cow I've seen divers take 4-5 hits after breaking a wing and they still keep going and going and diving and diving toughest duck around. They smell bad and taste even worse. There should be no shot shell restriction for diver hunting. Who is going to enforce it anyway?

Plus, you possibly free up the space for another group of guys as opposed to sitting there all day shooting a case and not getting your birds.

Hey, he never said he killed a limit......

The shell limit is nice in theory, but there's not enough enforcement out there to really make it work.

It is fun to read what the purists in any given genre have to say...... :chuckle:

I see a few comments about enforcement and truth be told there really isn't enough man power to really enforce any of the game laws. It's highly held upon the honor system, and as arbitrary as this rule may seem your honor hangs in the balance. I don't know about you all but man's word and a hand shake still mean something to me.

Enforcement of this issue is kind of a joke.
I have had several issues with enforcement on this.

Fish are highly protected pman... Trophy animals well not enough man power.

I have no problem complying with a shell limit, even if I know the chance of getting caught is near zero. Same thing with the nontoxic laws, same thing with courteous trolling for salmon.
If I can't get it done in 15 or 25 shots, I'll let someone else step in and give it a shot.

I was checked at nisqually last year. Gamies were super sneaky too. Pulled up on the other side of a flat and walked the mud line then popped up like 30 yards away. Full check. Plug, shells, license, registration and had been counting my shots too see how many empties I picked up. They had to be watching me for more than an hour. But everything was in order. They seemed kinda upset they couldn't tag me on anything. Then I got them check when I got back to the launch from a chick Gamie.

More rules and regulations heck let's make it 7 shells and while your at it lets get ride on lead in rifle bullets like California. Actually who really needs 7 ducks lets just make the limit 5 it's a slippery slope

I see where you are coming from, but you either have regulations that limit harvest or no opportunity to hunt. Some regulations make sense and some are from the left trying to ban hunting. Nontoxic waterfowl shot makes 100% sense but lead rifle bullet banning makes zero sense.
-
If you really saw were I was coming from you'd understand it is a hard line no more restrictive rules and regulations. The liberals take a little bit every year by a new rule or regulation it starts to add up fast. The fact that hunters can't band together makes me sick it's like death by 1000 small cuts.

A box is plenty, unless it's heavyshot, thats like 10 to a box is't it? To expensive for me, I don't shoot the stuff.
Hunting from the boat 25 rds is what I take as a box is easy to grab, plus a handfull of goose loads.
-
Late season goose I use hevi shot dead coyote 7 bucks a pop folds um hevi shot is good stuff

Every day on the marsh is different so I usually like to take a box of 3" # 2 steel for all my general purpose duck shots, a box of #4 steel in case it's a Teal day and 4-5 #7s for cripples plus I like to have 6-10 3.5" Hevi Shot goose loads just in case the situation presents itself.
I usually can knock down a limit in under a box but I don't like to be restricted so much.
I understand the reason for the shell limit in some ways but in other ways, it's just the tree hugger/refuge crowd limiting the noise and robbing more of our hunting rights. I'm ashamed of of our own WDFW for copying the refuge's restriction on WDFW lands.
I'd sooner see the basic laws/rules enforced more than create more rules with no real enforcement. For example, there's a group that has been frequenting Nisqually the last couple of years in a duck boat with blind that comes right about shooting time and sets up any place they want and numerous times it's been right next to or right in front of others. Very obnoxious and loud boat owner too. Loves to cuss and scream at his dog. I confronted them on two occasions and both of them were very dangerous as they had set up across the Nisqually Rr from another group and pass shot at ducks right at the other group. Numerous times I've seen this group shoot at ducks over neighboring groups decoys. Dangerous to say the least. Unethical also. I would think a 911 call would be in order when someone shoots directly at your location when close enough to hurt you.
I'd also like to see the wanton waste law put into play for those groups that don't make a reasonable attempt at retrieving their birds. Plenty of that out there.
Another pet peeve of mine is duck boats with no running lights. Plenty of jerks could be written tickets right at the launch before they even get out there to screw up everyone's day.
Chasing cripples with the motor and shooting while under power is not uncommon either.
From the Refuge stand point, I'd like to se them enforce the trespassing rules they post to include all the kayakers etc that seem to think they're above these rules. I seem them all the time paddling past the signs and into the refuge when the tide levels allow. Disturbing resting birds is the same whether it's done from a duck boat or bright red kayak.
