After 13 years putting in for a quality deer tag I drew the late Pogue unit. I thought that I was going to be set. With both my kids getting married this year and hunting in Utah, most of my vacation was gone. Then my bear season went up in smoke and the Pogue burnt to a crisp. I figured that with the little vacation I had and the unit being blacken, this wasn't the year to draw.
Well with the help of friends keeping me motivated and telling me it would still be a good tag to have...I made plans to hunt Nov 4 thru Nov 8. Things change a bit with a phone call on Saturday morning and I headed up on Saturday.
We for a nice buck a friend had seen in the area. We looked for him and never put eyes on him for two days. We did see a lot of bucks chasing does but not what I was looking for. We did spot a wide 3pt that might have had a target on his back later in the hunt, since I only had a few days to hunt.
On the third day, we decided to change up things and look in another location for him. We set up and found a nice 4pt with eye guards. After looking through the spotting scope I was ready to drop the hammer on him. After being told let's wait 10 minutes to see if the other deer might show up...well I can say that 10 minutes was a very long time.
We was about 600 yards from were we where sitting. The plan to get closer was in activation now. MonsterBull stayed back to keep an eye on him and three of set out to cross the valley to get closer. Somewhere at the bottom he caught us coming through. Thanks goodness that he ran into a bunch of does and went lovestruck. Laying on a rock at 360 yards, I looked at my Nikon Spot on chart....found my circle and settle in on his chest. Damn, my heart was beating pretty fast and he had a doe behind him.
I re-check which circle I needed to use and now he was alone. I let out the air in my chest and settled the circle right on the chest. As the 280AI barked out loud, the scope settle back on the pack and he was gone. My buddy told me I had hit him and he was going down.
The buck went about 30 or 40 yards and dropped. After MonsterBull, made it up to us we head to check out the buck. I have to say at this point I was amazed in it all...Nice buck, good friends and a plan that came together. Okay, I was shaking like a leaf.
After some hugs and high fives, pictures and more high...we settled down and soaked up just what happen.
I want to take the time here to thank all those that helped me on here. My friends and family for putting up with me during this time. Most importantly, my friends that came and sat on the mountain to share this 13 year coming to an end. I was thinking I would get a chance at a bigger deer, but I don't care at this point...I was after a 4 pt and with the little time i had to hunt this unit.....I'm fricken Happy!! :IBCOOL:

Very nice. I have a question, did you get him in any of the burned areas ? We HAD a cabin in the Limebelt and was wondering if people were hunting that moonscape..

Heck of a buck, way to make your tag count!

Campmeat I did drive up there and saw a couple of small guys next to private property. I only saw maybe three other hunters.

Although it is a shame that hunters here have to wait 13 years to draw a nice tag like this, I am really happy for you that your tag and your hunt ended in success. Congratulations.

Spectacular buck! Thank you also for letting guy's know how accurate Nikon's Spot On Ballistic Program is. I have taken a Ks doe at 596 but would love a shot at a monster Muley like you harvested.
Again,Congrats!!!!!

Did you see any decent whitetails? I have the late whitetail tag in there and will be heading over the end of this week.

Shannon, I saw a lot of does down in the fields, but not one buck. Good luck...

Thanks for the reply Arrowflinger. Hoping a few bucks are cruising the does by the time I get there.

We saw a couple tracks in there, like they were cruising through and not looking for food. Well, there isn't anything to eat in some spots...
