Any success stories yet
-
Seen 30 head of does I buck. :dunno:
-
I spent a couple days earlier in the week in the Alta looking around with bino's, spotting scope and camera. Found some deer. Just never saw anything I'd spend the late permit on. I intended to be there for several days but family obligations got me...
I really wanted to learn more about how the rut develops, and how the deer move.
Had a ball while I was there! I still think there should be a lot more deer in that unit.
It's nothing compared to what it was like when I was a kid.

Snow would help

Talk to Fitkin and he will tell you there is more than enough deer for the habitat!! :bash: :bash:

spent yesterday in there and saw some deer, nothing I would shoot with a special permit. The burn looks pretty good. it should improve in the next few years.

Pretty much what I saw. Havent photographed a big buck in there yet this year. The amount of deer isn't even a sliver as historical

A lot of cats in there!
-
I wouldn't doubt it. There was when hunting them with hounds was legal.
-
Heard from a wildlife biologist, it is almost a problem.
-
Wolves had nothing to do with it right. LOL
-
Seen a cat up libby creek tonight.

Looks like a cat kill.
That track and this bed with fresh piss were right next to the kill but I agree it looks like a cat kill the wolf had taken over (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F11%2F12%2F9851a1a7c3285e81c74ce60d2bb0a6cd.jpg&hash=47861ea42bd3699f9f84f54ab598066b24a2be66)

Those aren't canine tracks. They are cat tracks.

disagree to disagree. Cat tracks don't have there claws out when the walk. So those would be canine tracks
-
:yeah: K-9
-
I just looked at comparisons online of cougar and wolf track and I think it's wolf, :dunno:
-
Wolf for sure
-
Wolf track. Not nearly round enough and as stated, claws are present.
-
Definitely not a cat track, they are real round and no claws show in the track. Looks a lot like a wolf, unless Cujo is working the area.
-
If you look at the track with the hand, you can see the two lobes on the front of the heel pad and the three lobes on the back of the heel pad. This is an indicator of a cat track. Also, the toes trail in an asymmetrical shape. A canine track is symmetrical and the middle two toes will be even in the front.
Under certain conditions a cat track will shoe a pointed toe as in this case.
-
Shouldn't a cat track be the same size as your hand or is that just up the entiat river.

Lots of images here.

The track next to his hand looks to be in loose dirt a cat track could easily show claws in that soil. Look at the tracks in the bed... Round with no claw marks. Sometimes cat tracks will register nail marks, dogs always seem to. Cannot draw an "X" between the toes without hitting the pad. Pad seems to be about 50% of the track. Probably a female because it doesn't seem like a very big print. Not an expert tracker but that's what formed my observation.
-
Bobcat track but for some reason the one at the end of the couch can't move his leg so I can't compare his paw to my hand. :dunno:
-
Found these on the road yesterday bordering the Alta unit. Tracks in the snow melted out but all were k-9 like the print in the dirt. Measured about 5.5" pad to toe. Probably just coyotes I'm sure.
-
That wolf track is a very good one to compare to the OP track. Note the symmetry of this one relative to the first. Also, note the different shape of the heel pad. There are a few traits that really jump out at you once you know what to look for.
-
a friend who lives in alta and has a gardner tag has not seen a buck over 25. he has been hunting for 14 days. has seen 2 wolves and a bear. he wont put in for alta or gardner again. mike w

I watched a wolf drop down into the alta unit last year during my late buck hunt. Saw lots of tracks in the snow.
Next to my .300 ultra mag round

The one with the hand in it looks like canine and the other looks like cat. Could they be different tracks ?

They were right next to each other. We should of taken a better pic of the bed. I was trying to capture the whole bed with piss. There were a lot tracks and definitely wolf. We saw wolf track on this same ridge last year.
-
cle elum bowhunter Perhaps some one was just exercising their dog or dogs.
-
Ridgeratt, I suppose that could be true but tracks came up out of a canyon, traveled the road a ways and then dropped of the other side of the road towards Alta. Btw, no boot tracks anywhere along that stretch besides mine.
-
KFHunter had a photo close of folks exercising their dogs over here also.
-
Still no success pics maybe nobody on this site has a tag?

Well if people held out for larger bucks they might be eating tag soup.
-
2 friends did exactly that. mike w
-
way too much wolf sign in manson too very sad

we need to transplant some wolves to Olympia. mike w

It's a tough time in the Alta. I have been seeing plenty of deer, but the rut is pretty well over and the weather has not pushed many deer down from the high country. No shooters yet.
-
Lots of wolves in Alta. They have increased their range a lot in the past few years. Had some resident moose where I hunt and they cleared out. The deer have largely cleared out, with a few small pockets of skittish deer left. I see a lot of wolf scat and tracks. Lots of cats last few years. I started packing a sidearm during muzzy season, since I hike in the dark. Too many dogs and cats.
