It's time to hit the rivers for winter steel, let's see the pics.

It's a little early still down here.  The Gray's Harbor and Willapa systems have been on lock down.

agreed, i don't start even bothering to look for steelhead down that way until thanksgiving at least.  fewer and fewer rivers get those early fish these days...

The ruts have been a bit early this year, maybe the winter runs will follow as well.

I'm crossing my fingers that that grays harbor system opens up before December.

I would think that when the Nooch opens it should be good for fishing?????? I would expect an aluminum hatch when it opens.............. :yike:

WDFW has driven the North Sound steelheader into extinction.......No steelhead fishing unless you want to hit Gissberg ponds.

With the 7400 closed down it is gong to be really interesting to see what kind of crowding the river gets down below!   :bash:

A certain other Gray's Harbor river is red hot right now for steelhead!

No chit. And with local coho closed, we have no river fishing fall, winter, and spring. They try to spin it like a good thing that steelhead smolts were planted in the lakes, but it's a crock. They even planted them in the crappiest lakes around. It's mostly lakes that are road side ditches.
Oh, and they tried to make it sound like planting the Sky was a big bonus. Planting just one river in the entire area is not a solution!

I also am worried about the disaster White Bridge down is going to be. Without the 7400 down float, theres going to be way to many people packed into to little river.

Anyone ever float a pontoon from the dam down?  Wouldn't think a drift boat would be to smart up there.

There is a canyon, that bad things can happen in. Kayaks go thru. My bud floated it in a Aire Puma mini raft and bad things happened.

We floated above 7400 a few miles. Have to drag your craft pretty far. And cant fish from a boat up there.  Took out at 7400.

Luckily we have a friend with land, gravel bar and a ramp that we can lunch from that a little less than 1/2 way through the 7400-White Bridge float.  There is one other private ramp a mile or so up river and I think that guy charges a select few to use his ramp.  Somebody with land and a good spot could make some serious $$ with launching and shuttle fees!!

Was always a little envious of you guys putting in there.

I'm sure there are a few people up there that will realize that soon enough and open up an avenue. I can think of a couple locations fairly high in that float that could be great launches.

You may make it up, but you'll never make it down, especially if the suns shining! You let me know when you're going to head up there, I'll make sure I'm there to gather whatever comes floating down river.

in all seriousness, i don't fish far above carter creek for the most part, and really don't fish the "boatable" parts of the wynoochee all that much these days anyway.  i can only hope the bright side of the 7400 access being shut down means more fish make it up to the upper river.  used to have some really great days up near the trap, the last 6 or 7 years the fishing's been lousy, i think they are just all being caught before they make it up there with all the pressure these days.

just love to get a rise out of the drift boat only people, especially the ones from seattle  :IBCOOL:

I have a buddy that got his old 18' Willie Classic up to damn near 7400 before. No joke. I used to float that river a bit when I owned a Clackacraft.  WAY too crowded now!

A couple of years ago we ran into a couple of guys in a sled about a 1/2 mile upstream from the rock garden on The Nooch.  They took a bit of a beating getting up there and asked if they could follow us out through the nasty stuff.  We got them through but they said they would never try it again.  They put a basketball sized divot in their hull going up.  They are lucky that they didn't flip.

Yeah drew I  run up above the rock garden quite often, even back down through it on the kicker. It's not bad at all. Oh yeah and the diversion dam is very jumpable from experience

After the storms the other day, the road down the Hoh River washed out.  Oil City Rd, don't know when it will be repaired.

Quite a bit of snow in the mountains this year (especially compared to last year) and cold temps forecast for the next 10 days.  So, should get good flows and decent color for a while anyways.

Snuck out to a lesser known river Monday before work, holy crap there were guys everywhere.  Did manage to lose a steelhead and land a dark silver, but still feel a bit unsatisfied not being able to move around much due to the crowds...

If it is the river that I am thinking of, I quit fishing it a few years ago because of the crowds, theft and garbage,  Now I have to drive 1-3 1/2 hours to fish instead of 10 minutes.   :bash:

My brother and I took his 13 year old boy out on the 26th and the boy hooked his first steelhead!! Chrome bright 12 lb hen. It was pretty Awsome to watch him fight it for a good 7 or 8 minutes, rolling around and jumping and eventually getting the privilege to net it for him. Headen out New Years morning for hopefully some more action.

Didn't have time for measurements, for the sake of the fish, but it was a solid 20, no question. I don't like throwing that number around loosely, either.

Was back home for a week and got some fishing in. Went 3 for 6 Monday and 3 for 3 Tuesday. Two different river systems, 50/50 mix of natives and hatchery and an old summer run mixed in.
Sometimes I wish I still lived on the wet side of the state, then I hit the parking lot on I5 by JBLM and it brings me back to reality  :chuckle:
