Title: What do you think of this Muley? Score and age class?
Post by: steeliedrew on November 08, 2015, 10:33:08 PM
A good buddy and I spotted the buck in the pics below during a mid July scouting trip. He was with one other good buck and a really young forky. We'll just say somewhere east of the Cascades...I returned to the basin we found him in, and on the first hunt of the first morning I was lucky enough to get on him and his bachelor herd. Long story short I made a stalk but the last tree between me and them put me at 76 yards and it would have been a steep downhill shot as well. I had not practiced enough to make the shot ethical.  I was with addicted2hunting that morning and he had also stalked in. He had chosen a different line towards the bucks and closed to 38 yards. Most of you will remember his thread about missing the deer of a lifetime. He took the shot, missed unfortunately, the deer ran off and that was that.

Pics and videos were taken through my buddies' Vortex Viper spotter with an iPhone on a phoneskope. We were about 120 yards away.

Anyhow, I've been wondering what this buck would score? And how bout age class? Hopefully Boneaddict will see this thread and chime in also. So please tell me about this deer. I really don't know anything about scoring bucks or judging age class and am interested in learning. Also, did anyone kill him during modern? The reason I ask is cause during archery we had the basin to ourselves! Fast forward to the modern opener and there was 11 trucks at the trailhead!!! We were going to try and fill my buddies' general modern tag on one of the brutes in the basin. What a disappointment that was...

Drew

We call him "Krusty" due to the little crab claw he was on his right side.

One of the bucks that Krusty was with in July:

My buddy swears that the buck in the video link below is the same buck as the above link but I've always felt it is Krusty:

Thanks for looking and for any insight on score, age class, and if Krusty is still alive.

Oh and does anyone know how I can imbed the videos so folks don't have to click on the links? If so, please PM me. Or imbed them if you can do it from your end.

Thanks.

:yike:  Holy smokes! I don't know much about scoring deer, but I do know that buck has got to be 30 inches wide, at least. The front forks are shorter than the back so I believe that might hurt the score, but I don't care what the score is, that's a very nice buck. He doesn't look really old to me, maybe 6? So I'd think he's still got a couple good years left in him to get even bigger.   :o

Yep. He's a great deer. I'm not much for score but I figured he is good and was curious. Truth be told, I'm only in my 4th year of hunting...period. I stuck a Muley doe on my 2nd year. Haven't killed since. Soooooo many close encounters though! Archery ain't easy.

I'd be pumped if any of our group gets him or one of his buddies. There's good genetics in that Basin for sure.

Great buck   I would guess him around 170 and 5 and half years old. doesn't look to old to me but I could be way off. I would be excited as all heck to get up there next year. There is no telling what he could turn into.

It appears to be missing a Rg4, I'd be shocked if it went 160 :twocents:

Great big frame, terrible scoring buck though. His fork depth kills him. And as mentioned above, he's missing his G4 on the right side.  Phool is probably right with his assumption of score.
For what's it's worth, you'd have killed a good buck on a general season tag, regardless of score.

I would say your in the 190s To about 230 wide deer but fronts are week and same withe back forks good deer tthrough
Title: Re: What do you think of this Muley? Score and age class?
Post by: GUscottie on November 09, 2015, 10:55:43 AM
While the buck has the width and height that everyone associates with a "190 inch" buck, this deer comes no where near that due to his missing g4 on the right and the "crabby" nature of all of his forks. If he hits 170, you're lucky or you are bad at measuring  :twocents:  He's a hell of a buck and you'd be a fool to pass him.
Title: Re: What do you think of this Muley? Score and age class?
Post by: Karl Blanchard on November 09, 2015, 11:02:55 AM
He's wide and tall but score wise he will gross 166-170.  He's actually pretty good on his backs, but like others have said, no G4 and then a weak G4 on the other side kinda kills him.  I shoot him in any state on most tags though.  Stud buck!

You're probably somewhat unfamiliar with how mule deer are scored.  It's a great buck but not close to 190.  Not close to 180.

Huge frame and velvet are kind of deceptive in this case.

Post by: M_ray on November 09, 2015, 11:07:23 AM
Nice buck ... Low 160 class and 26" wide ... And when I say low you'd Be lucky to make it over 161 IMO

One thing too...everything looks huge from behind (talking deer here, get your mind out of the gutter)

Still a nice buck.  I'd take him just about anywhere and anytime.

My guess was

Mains 22-21
g1's 2-2 "being generous"
g2's 16-16
g3's 8-8
g4's 0-4
Mass 37 "being generous"
Spread 22
159 gross

Over 33" wide and definitely over 160"

So MtnMuley, seeing as how I've posted these pics and video of this deer in his live state, I'd say it's safe to assume that I know of a certain basin that holds good deer.  I'd love to see a pic of the one that either you killed or the one that you know of that was killed, that you are saying is for sure this deer. I'm not sure where the problem lies with that since I already know where deer like this live.  :dunno: It isn't like you're giving something secret up by posting a picture of a dead deer. Please feel free to shoot me a PM if need be. I'm also curious as to what elevation the deer was shot at?

And heck, why not post a pic of said buck on this thread for all to see what he looks like hard horned? Me and addicted2hunting saw him and his buddies without velvet but have no pictures from that day.
Title: Re: What do you think of this Muley? Score and age class?

Thank you to those who took the time to rough score him via pics. I actually learned a little.

If a harvest pic surfaces of this deer that would be cool.  If some lucky Hunter did kill him, I think it should be celebrated and pics should be shared. He's a great deer.  I know the basin we found him in holds more like him, cause I've seen them. 8) so I'll only cry a little.  :'(

I shot one in WY that is built similarly- huge frame but shallow forks. 167 net for mine and so my guess would be somewhere in that ballpark.  If he had deep forks it'd make all the difference in the world......still, I'd bust him in a second!  Gorgeous buck.

Ah I didnt notice he was missing the fork on the one side. I still think he would hit 170-180 if he had that fork.
Several differnt people say he is dead and no pic. Come on guys someone has a pic. No pic so I say he is still running around the hills. Atleast PM steelie a pic so he can know for sure.

And another vote for him being dead...yet...no pics? You folks out there seem to be guarding it like it's some huge secret.  :dunno: Is it cause I'm a west sider you you're mad that I know where the big boys live?  :sry:  I've seen one, maybe two bucks posted this year that broke the 200" mark so what's the big deal about posting pictures of a 160ish buck? He is a fantastic deer and should be celebrated by all if he was taken. If someone knows of it on Facebook just screen shot it and get it up here.

Are you serious?

I don't think anyone's "worked up." Just would be interesting to know what it actually scores, since that's what this thread was about and we're all guessing at the score based on a couple of pictures.

If it was killed, apparently they didn't take any pictures.

I'd say he's about 50 in. Wide and probably score about 280. Maybe 300 or 310 if you're lucky. His body also probably weighs about 800 lbs, and you can tell from his eyes that he's got laser vision and can fly. His right front leg looks pretty strong so I'd say he's had some nasty arm wrestling matches with sasquatch. Those powerful legs make it obvious he can dunk though he might have a hard time palming the ball  :twocents: :twocents: . Also in case you didn't know he batted .540 in the last world series and was the first deer ever in space. He wears a brand new pair of LeBrons when checking out the ladies and has some fresh bling around his neck that he got off a hunter. So yah he's a shooter  good for Billythekidrock if that's who got him. Maybe he can shed some more light on his personality for us.

I'd love to say congrats to Billythekidrock but without pics that's tough. I think it would actually be really cool to see a harvest pic of this exact deer given my brief history with him.

Also folks, I never did say what GMU I found him in.  8)

How did he go about it the wrong way :dunno: Not being argumentative but would really like to know. His thread, his pics and a lot of people saying "score wise" that the buck is not that strong. (obviously I am paraphrasing a tad as he has a awesome frame which has been mentioned several times). Including comments from guys that have a known history on this board for being trophy mule deer aficionados.  Then we have claims of the bucks demise, and further claims such as yours that he is much better than is being guessed. Just my opinion, but if Mtn Muley killed it or knows who did, and didn't want to share any details or pics, then he would have been wise to not post anything at all.

I'm not sure how I went about it the wrong way???  :dunno: I meant no disrespect in anything I wrote. I simply shared an AWESOME deer that some buddies and I found and asked a few questions. I PM'd MtnMuley yesterday and did not receive a response. Velvet is always tough for me.  It is a great buck and if someone did take it, congrats.  I would be nice to know the score but not the end of the world if it doesn't come out.  I didn't figure we would ever know the score until someone said it was dead, then there was hope we would get a real answer.

For what it is worth my guess would have been 155-162 and a shooter all day long if I had a chance.
Title: Re: What do you think of this Muley? Score and age class?
Post by: M_ray on November 10, 2015, 10:27:19 AM
Drew I wouldn't say you went about it wrong there are a lot of reasons for no pic. The hunter may not be a member, and those that are and know him or those that have been sent the pic through a friend know that it's a no no to post a pic without the owners permission. Maybe you'll be lucky and it's his brother that got spanked! Either way the gene pool is there so there's another in there somewhere.

BTW I'm not being disrespectful when I score, I will always score very conservative and want to be pleasantly surprised that an animal exceeds my expectations. I don't want to be that guy that claims everything is 10-20" bigger than it really is  ;)
In other words I'd rather be under than over! He's a buck I wouldn't pass on just about anywhere, thanks for sharing ...good luck!

Thanks M_ray.

Again, If I offended anyone involved with this deer it was never my intention.  I might have asked something along the lines of "are east side guys mad that a westsider knows where the big boys are?" but did not mean to cause trouble. I was just having a little fun when I said that cause it seemed to me that MtnMuley was having some fun on my behalf.  Can we please put this thread back on track? A picture would be a step in the right direction if someone has permission to post one or if the hunter themselves wants to come forward with story and pics.

:tung: I know , just thought I'd bring a little levity to a derailment by adding a derailment.  :sry: It is an A typical Bad A buck!! My knees would be knocking if I had him in my spotter!

And I missed the sucker at 38 yds.... but yes the velvet makes him look much larger...my final thoughts are 170...my stepdads buck was similar in frame but not as tall in the back and his net score was 168 and some change...

I would say 26" inside on the main beams and 32" outside. Overall probably a 170" buck at best. Has good height but weaker front forks and deductions. That said I wouldn't even think twice about taking a buck like that. Wall hanger for sure!

I would say your in the 190s To about 230 wide deer but fronts are week and same withe back forks good deer tthrough

I will always score very conservative and want to be pleasantly surprised that an animal exceeds my expectations. I don't want to be that guy that claims everything is 10-20" bigger

The answer probably lies somewhere in between 160" and 230"

All that I have gathered from this thread is that someone from the forum poached a 37" 3x4 at night in Wyoming, and a half dozen other members are in on it.   Until photographic evidence is presented to prove otherwise, this must be the truth :peep: :stirthepot: :chuckle: 8)

Some of you guys crack me up. It's pretty sad actually. In the original post, he asks the question if anybody knows anything about this buck or somebody harvested him. I simply replied, "he's dead". I answered a question he asked. How is that "stirring the pot"? I didn't shoot the buck, nor would I ever post pictures of somebody else. It's actually funny you make this comment c-money, because you happened to be the guy who posted a picture of me and my buck back in 09ish that somehow you got through a text. I immediately had it removed, and had a bad taste in my mouth about pics on the Internet being posted by people you don't even know. Get it now? :hello:

I may just be guilty of what you say, just don't recall.  Our opinion of stirring the pot must differ, cause what I read seemed pot stirish to me from the aspect of, that is it. Nothing more. Usually one gives a story to aid in the understanding of the topic....Guess you said he is dead, gave a width, and quit there. Nothing else. The thread got a little stirred up with no further info. Fair enough MtnMuley. You and I are going to have to agree to disagree.  I'm going to go ahead and say the I do not believe you. And we will leave it at that. Good thing I know where deer like this, summer year after year. And I WILL be on them again in 2016. That's a certainty.  oh also, I sent you two PM's in the last couple days. I was very cordial in both and even apologized if I had possibly offended you with this thread. I received no response. Did you not know you had a PM or were you ignoring the conversation? If it's the latter that's pretty weak. And now you call me a third grader?  :chuckle:

Honestly people, what's with the picture thing these days? People have gotten so weird. Half the reason to view a hunting and or fishing forum is to look at photos from people's adventures.

Glad this turned out like 90% of all threads on here. Derailed because of a few trolls.

If the hunter doesn't want to post a picture or story leave it at that, maybe they aren't out for "keyboard" stardom and don't want the story and photos available to every hunter in washington.  Nothing wrong with that, very nice frame on that guy but not much score wise.

If the bucks dead, or not dead, it's probably not going to keep you from heading high up above the valley looking for him, or other bucks, is it? So, does it really matter? Keep at it!!

LOTS of big bucks never get posted, and I'm okay with that. It's a personal choice for the individual hunter to post or not to post their harvest (I'm not posting my buck). Posting another's harvest just to prove a point, is just wrong.

He sure is a nice buck, but spend enough time in those bowls and rocks and I'm sure you'll turn one up that's a lot bigger!!

One of the best things about this is all the assumption that he lives or lived (still a mystery) in the Valley area. Perhaps because in the 2nd video link I posted it shows the edge of an old burn? Well, lots of burns on the east side folks.  ;) That buck migrated pretty far between September and October to have been killed in those units is what I'm saying. :twocents:

If MtnMuley says he's dead.  I believe him.

Someone doesn't want to share pics.  Respect that!  For many reasons people have not posted pics on a public forum.  People who call out where they shot it by the background, who announce the area to everyone.

I see there are two choices.  Acknowledge he's dead and move on, or spend all next year looking for an animal that is actually in someones living room.   :twocents:

I can respect it. whether I believe it or not because fact is I do not Know MtnMuley so I'd need to see a pic to know for sure. As for spending all year looking for a buck that's already on someone's wall...I won't be looking for Krusty specifically. Any legal buck will do. Oh whats funny is that this isn't the first year that my group of hunting buddies has been on these bucks in that particular basin...Did I leave that out of the story?  8)

Look everybody  :hello: I'm not trying to have a pissing match here.  I was excited about this particular deer and genuinely wanted to learn a little about his score potential.  I had been thinking all along that he had to be 180" all day but I don't know about scoring and it was brought to my attention in this thread that he's missing his right G4 and that he has shallow forks and that he possibly would only net around 160".   I actually had to google what a G4 is. That's how much I don't know about antler configuration.

I do appreciate the positive comments and those who took time to educate me on this deer. I absolutely did not want this to turn in to what it did.  :sry:

Well well well... looks like Jimmy gave up his hunting spot! I would recognize that rock with the lichen on it anywhere, and that dead lodgepole in the background. I stopped there to take a few pics of a big buck this summer... I know where I'll be hunting next year! :chuckle:   Seriously though... I kind of thought all he wanted to know was if it was as big as HE thought it was. If I am chasing a big buck and I hear that someone else got it I get a little disappointed too and I always ask to see it just so I can see how big it really is up close. It has never kept me from going back to the same area in the future either.

I get the no posting pics thing... I will never post a pic of a deer I harvest... I may tell the story but that's it... None of anyone's business what buck I kill...my close friends will know though for sure... But just as Id assume you folks wouldn't believe me if I killed a buck over 200" without pics... It's safe to say it's a normal response for someone to say prove it... Anybody can SAY they killed a masher...talk is cheap...

I'm ok with that.  Like I've stated already numerous times on this thread, If someone was lucky enough to take that deer this year, I'm happy as hell for them.  I'll admit that I was being a little too persistent in asking for pics and rubbing it in too hard about not receiving any but I was kind of joking around a little too. Sometimes people are a little too serious on these forums.   I can respect that not everyone wants to plaster their ugly mugs all over the internet and not everyone feels the need to show off the animals they take though. To each their own.  Anyhow, It seems like the general consensus is that he's a 160" deer.  I understand why and have learned a little about deer antlers. That was mostly the point of this entire thread...TO LEARN! of course I wanted to know if someone shot him... and man what a "S" show that turned into.  :chuckle:

I know mtnmuley if he says the bucks dead the buck is dead. And just because you saw somedeer in a basin once that doesnt really mean much. But have fun good luck!

:sry:

There are several people in this thread saying the buck in question  is dead. It's not just MtnMuley saying it. I'm pretty sure what MtnMuley and everyone else who knows about this buck is doing by not posting pictures is showing the lucky hunter  who maybe has not given permission to post their pictures the respect they deserve to not have their pictures posted all over the Internet. That used to be common courtesy. Now with the advent of social media and whatever else, it's a big shocker and causes multiple pages of banter and allegations of pot stirring.  The responses in this thread are ridiculous if you ask me. If the hunter who killed this buck hasn't ok'd posting he pictures or he doesn't want to post someone else's pictures, then respect the guys wishes and let it go.
If MtnMuley says that buck is dead, then I'd bet the house that the buck is dead.

Steeliedrew's posts were just fine and he was very respectful in all that he said. I felt bad that a couple people were giving him such a hard time. He only asked if someone could post a picture if they had one. Not a big deal. Some of the comments directed at him were in very poor taste and unnecessary. There was no need to insult him over nothing. A few people keep saying to trust what mtnmuley says. Why? We don't know him personally. Just because he says that particular buck is dead doesn't mean it is. I'm getting tired of hearing that. If he doesn't have a picture or can't post it, thats fine. But there was no excuse for some of the things that he said.

Never thought I'd say this, but I gotta kinda agree with Bobcat :chuckle:.  Steelie's posts never came off aggressive or disrespectful to me.  He found a good buck and was excited about sharing it.  If I had history with a deer and someone claimed it was dead I would want to see it too.  If anything, just for closure.  LOTS of bucks all over the west with that antler configuration, I would be hard pressed to believe it was the same buck without seeing pics, AND pming with the lucky hunter to confirm area.

That being said, knowone should post others pics without permission.  That aint cool 8)

I'm not sure what thread you were reading, but I saw several posts from steeliedrew that were calling MtnMuley a liar in an attempt to get him to post a pic.  Those were way more disrespectful than anything MtnMuley said.  Some highlights in case you missed them:

"Pics or it didn't happen.   :hello:"
"If you're right on the unit then I'm more inclined to believe the story."
"I'm going to go ahead and say the I do not believe you. And we will leave it at that. Good thing I know where deer like this, summer year after year."

Fine. Just my opinion and I held off a long time but finally had to say something, in defense of steeliedrew. Those quotes I took as lighthearted comments. Not a big deal. Mtnmuley was free to do as he wished. What he could have done though, was to reply to the PM's he was sent rather than ignoring them. Isn't that common sense? So, maybe it wasn't so much what Mtnmuley said that was disrespectful, but what he DIDN'T SAY.

Next time, if people would just use common sense and be polite, it wouldn't get to this point.

Wow really? Ill agree with some of what you say but I don't see where things went sideways just cause MM posted. Is the anger towards MM cause he wouldn't say how he knew the deer was dead? Cause we all know why he wont post pics but I don't see where he was disrespectful as you put it.   :dunno:

No, not what I wanted to hear. More that he didn't even reply to the PM's that he was sent. Who does that? I don't ignore PM's from ANYBODY, and I get a lot, from people who I have no clue who they are.

There also were insults in this thread that violated forum rules but I don't want to get into that.

I'm done with this.

Tip for all reading this: answer your PM's.

I unfortunately read this entire thread  :(

couple things

1) It's not cool to post pictures of animals you yourself did not kill without permission.  This includes all forms of media, PM, texts ect.
2) It's not cool to apply pressure to get someone to bend, calling their integrity into question or inferring they are a liar or mistaken is really not cool.

I wouldn't answer a PM either, it's just more pressure to get you to bend and show a pic or give out information that's not yours to give.

Okay. KF Hunter. It's not that he didn't share a picture. For all we know, he doesn't even have one. But answer your PM's! And say something other than just "it's dead." Or, say nothing at all. If he's going to post in the thread make it a worthwhile post. Did he think that steeliedrew wouldn't be curious and want to hear more? Man, that's just cruel to come on and say nothing more than "it's dead." No more details? A friend killed it, it was 30 inches wide, etc. What would it hurt to simply be friendly instead of rude? I don't get it.

Steeliedrew DID share a picture, of a very nice buck. And that's what we're all on this site for. To see him disrespected for starting a great thread and simply asking a few questions, is not what I like to see. I bet he won't want to start another thread like that in the future, and either will a lot of other people who read it. My respect is all for steeliedrew, he took the insults all very well and played nice throughout the entire thread.

I shouldn't have let that post get past the censor, I edited it.

We looked at this from the opposite end of the spectrum.  Where you seen a guy being polite and asking for more information, I seen a person getting called a liar and getting pressured to release information he wasn't given permission to share.

Some people expect their word to be good enough (it's dead) and that's the end of it. Your welcome.

Funny thing is I can't even view the pictures, so I'm solely responding to how the thread has progressed and found it disconcerting.  I want people to share, but I don't want people to be pressured to share what isn't theirs to share.  I'll come back later when I can see the pictures

First off I'd like to say thank you to Bobcat for the things he has said.

Secondly, Folks....A LOT of the time on hear people read WAY TOO far into things. When I said "pics or it didn't happen  :hello:" that was simply some friendly forum banter to get a laugh and maybe a more long winded response from MtnMuley than "he's dead" the response I got from what I posted was a tune to that of a response I'd get from openly insulting someone in a hurtful way. I NEVER intended to hurt or offend. Bobcat said it best when he said that I have a history with this deer, although brief but a very exciting history to say the least. And YOU BET I was curious when someone I've never shook hands with tells me he's dead.  I said it a few posts ago and maybe all did not see it but I did admit to being TOO persistent in asking for pics.  I'm man enough to admit that.

There hasn't been a day that has passed since I last saw that deer that I do not think of him. I had him and his bachelor group at 76 yards with a perfect wind, ready to run an arrow through one of them, in OPEN COUNTRY! If that's not exciting I don't know what is. So of course I'm curious when I hear of his possible demise. But I'm certainly not angry towards the Hunter. Not at all. In fact I'd be overjoyed to congratulate them on a serious accomplishment. And a WELL deserved one at that.

This is my 4th year of hunting. Period. I've been bow hunting from the beginning. I took a Muley doe on my 2nd year but haven't killed since. Lost a cow I shot last year. STEEP downhill 40 yard shot. Hit her high in the void. Never found first blood. Only found the arrow covered in fat with blood on the fletchings. And I've had countless encounters other than that with deer, elk, and bear. The point of what I just wrote is that I wanted to say that it's LARGELY due to the helpful folks on this forum that a guy who didn't grow up hunting and had no mentors in his family can have accelerated success.  I come on here to learn. If you took the time to go through the history of threads I have started and participated in you'll see that I'm not a Troll.

Oh and KFhunter, if you want to see pics I'd be happy to email them to you. Just shoot me a PM if you'd like.
Title: Re: What do you think of this Muley? Score and age class?

I think the important thing to take from all of this is there's about a dozen different reasons why people don't post pictures on forums like this. If a guy is not going to post a picture, he's not going to post a picture. If I have a picture of somebody's deer I don't post it unless I have their ok. Same goes for a lot of folks.

By the way Steelie, I heard the buck was shot from the road.  Think of all that energy you wasted hiking into there.

Looks like you pulled a shoulder mount off the wall and snapped a pic.   Needs more background to prove it isn't fake.   Bucklucky and Shirrod could probably pull that off.

Seems to me the issue is not whether a picture was posted/not posted.  I see occassional posts where members talk about having photos, which they won't be posting.  The not posting - I completely understand - I do not post harvest photos anymore either.  However, if you are not willing to share a photo - or do not have permission to share a photo - why announce to the world you have this information?  Why not just stay silent? Even if someone asks about whether a particular animal has been harvested?  Is it to prove to others you are in the cool kids club?  Thats how I interpret some of the dialouge I see.  I have a photo.  I'm not going to share that photo.  But I want you to know I have the photo.  :dunno:

Ok so you said you weren't mad cause he didn't post a pic rather that he didn't answer a PM? So which one is it? Just trying to understand the logic of your attack on  Mtmuley?

BTW I didn't see where either MM or Steeliedrew were so horrible to one another so it didn't bother me ... but the whining about how one responds or doesn't to ones liking has done more damage to this thread IMO  :twocents:

Tip for all reading this: answer your PM's.

The only one I seeing stirring up stuff now are you two.  Why post Idahohunter.  Most had moved on, you could have easily let it die?  Same theory that you are supposedly speaking about.... and then there is Bobcat still trying to get the last word in.  I thought he said he was done. LOL

very interesting take on things, not one I share though.

mtnmulie did the OP a favor by letting him know that the buck was dead and no longer available for fair chase, then got called to the carpet for doing him a favor.

Which is worse?

1) letting another hunter continue to obsess over a dead buck you know for sure is dead or;
2) letting the guy know it's dead, but sorry can't show you a picture or divulge information about it because it's not mine to show or tell about?

I think what people aren't grasping is some hunters tend to fixate on a target chasing it for years, they name the buck like steelie did here.   Those kind of hunters need to know if "their" buck is gone.  I suspect mtnmulie understood this as he too chases large trophy bucks and probably targets certain ones.  In his mind he was doing the OP a solid, then got lambasted for it.

1st time shame on you, 2nd time shame on me!  unfortunately mtnmulie (and others reading this fiasco) have learned the hard way not to help out a fellow trophy chasers and letting them know a certain buck is gone - and that's what I find sad about this whole deal.

So this is not me taking a side but I do know how my brain works.  I am a "believe it when I see it" kind of guy.  That buck has no defining features that stick out.  He's a high 20's deer with decent mass.  There are a 100 deer just like him out there.  So to say without a doubt that that exact buck is dead would leave me far from convinced without further verification.   Hell 4 1/2 years ago his momma could have had twins and there is another out there almost identical to him.

There is about 5 guys on this sight that I can think of off the top of my head that I would believe without actually seeing a pic and MM is not one of them.  I AM NOT saying he doesn't know what he is talking about but I don't personally know him or his background.  Are we all supposed to just believe what we read from someone we don't know now?

No favor was done for steeliedrew in my mind.  If anything, it only made his life worse because if it was me, I would be looking even harder for this buck.  If I saw a pic or exchanged pm's and that solidified it in my mind, then that would be a favor because then I could move on to other deer.   I just couldn't throw in the towel because a stranger said "he's dead".  :twocents:

Umm I saw this guy hard horned with Steelie and he did not regress... I had him broadside at 38 yds again didn't regress... And yes there are a lot of bucks out there like that so I have to say show me pictures... But if he is dead then that's ok because he was with 6 other 150+ bucks in that bachelor heard and we were stalking all 7.... And it's the same group of bucks we have been following for 3 yrs... Pics all 3 yrs... So we will just go kill another 160 buck no biggies... But I gaurantee you guys won't see pics from me...

:twocents:

Its SITE not SIGHT :chuckle:

:yeah: I really enjoy sharing my adventures with like minded people. And half the reason for visting forums is horn porn and fish porn. Cause let's face it....most of us work a lot, and when we can't be out in the field it's great to live through folks in their adventures to keep that fire burning. This is why I've fallen in love with Instagram this year. More horn porn on there than you can shake a stick at.

That's one way to look at it? ... I however give a guy the benefit of the doubt until I have a reason NOT to believe them  ;)  Those who have been around here awhile are smart enough to tell who is here to stir the pot and cause trouble and who have a track record of being genuine and helpful I've never seen Mt Muley fall into the first category ... So I for one am not passing judgement until I see otherwise.  :twocents:

There is a lot of bucks out there that could look similar. The least Mtn Muley could do is pm steelie with the area the buck was killed in so that steelie knows if 'his' buck is dead or not. If you can't do that, why post that it's dead?  :dunno:

Thats exactly why I tried to make it very clear that I was not implying he was doing so, merly pointing out that "in general"  if an individual does not know someone personally, they tend to not take their word as the gospel.  Thats it, nothing more

Problem with that is there's a lot of assumption on where this buck is from. Where it was said to have been killed is quite a few miles away from where we found him in his summer range. Not even the same unit. I know Mule deer migrate a good deal but didn't expect him to move that far that fast.

I dont know how far the buck was killed from where you saw him but WEA300MAG had a bomber buck on his trail camera during the summer that was killed during general season 16-17 miles away as the crow flies.

I cant believe this threat has lasted this long.

Its not unfortunate, its life.  Lots of folks out there that are completely full of bull crap.  Heck I ran into a guy in the elk woods this year that beat feet over to me to talk to me.  I think we have all ran into this guy :chuckle:  300 yard shots with his ball and patch pistol, 3 bucks from Dayton the last 5 years that that were over 40" wide, a day of coyote hunting where he had to resort to his sidearm to fend off the wave of dogs.  21 dead coyotes when the smoke settled to be exact.  For all I know this guy could be anyone of a lot of people on this very site.  Sorry, but I'm not believing the stories he told, regardless not having a prior reason to not believe him.

Disclaimer:  I am in know way referring to specific individuals in this post, it is a generalization of a good portion of society as a whole.  Well except for the guy I was describing, he was completely full of it :chuckle:

The only scored antler set that I have seen was actually similar to this beast you have on camera. It was scored right under 200: I think 196 if my memory serves me correct. But it is hard to estimate of course.

Your comparison and what Mtmuley said are miles apart so again I would say I think most are smart enough to find some even ground. Look I don't know where anyone said that his word has to be the gospel other than you but I think there is a great difference in the way you are trying to explain things and they way it actually went down. No one said to go through your life being naive but going through it as if everyone is unbelievable first is something I for one am not going to do, I respect how you do it its just not my way  :hello:

Its an exaggeration of a point.  Believing someone you don't know.  Of course they aren't identical.

It comes back to believing people that you do not know.  If I had a relationship with a good deer, and someone I don't know just says, ya he's dead, and then nothing more?  I would question that and would want to see proof.  Pretty good odds you would do the same if roles were reversed.  Am I wrong?

boy I would have to go read back through but I'm fairly certain I never once said it was dead or alive. I merely stated that IF IT WAS ME PERSONALLY I would need further closer than just some strangers word. Why is this so hard to understand? I have no side to take.  I would no sooner beieve steeliedrew''s word as I would MM.  Nothing against them but they are 100% complete strangers TO  ME.  It would be like you posting pics from your montana trip and then me saying, ya that buck is dead.  Pretty sure you wouldn't believe me.  Am I wrong?

Old school is old school.  Dead is dead.  I guess I speak his language.

By the way folks, if any of you are actually in tune with the migration routes of deer in the Methow, you'll note they can go quite far in their travels, in routes you never imagined.  He'll even the WDFW acknowledges that.

By the way folks, if any of you are actually in tune with the migration routes of deer in the Methow, you'll note they can go quite far in their travels, in routes you never imagined.  He'll even the WDFW acknowledges that.
I've actually come up with like 9 now :chuckle:, and you are most certainly one of them Doug
Along with Rob and Mark I might add
Crap I think I got bumped off the list !

Am I wrong?

No, your right I would ask ... but if the guy doesnt want to let on any more information I am not going to go look for the rope and a good hangin branch at that point either  ;)
exactly!  That's what I'm saying.  I never went for the rope in this thread.  In fact I stated multiple times, I have no dog in the fight, and neither side is wrong or right.

Sorry I didn't mean to imply YOU did just saying in general people should have left it alone at that point

Nope, just call em like I see em.  Those guys know what they are talking about when it comes to mule deer.  This is fact.  Nothing more nothing less.

:dunno:

Okay, I haven't been on here but once in the last 4 or 5 years ...not sure why but this is the first thread I came across and of course came for the pics. LOL.  But, I have looked at a couple other threads tonight/morning and didn't bother obviously to read past the first and last page of this with quick views at 2 thru 12 for a pic...again lol.  BUT...and I maybe dead wrong... but does anybody else think FRANKCHURCHBANDIT possibly has a picture of this buck in his last picture post?  Kind of looks that way to me if you take off the velvet and add some late July/Aug growth to that crab claw.

After seeing Bornforhorns' pic that he posted I've been thinking all day. At first I thought "not wide enough" but that crab claw looks just like how it looked in September when me and addicted2hunting got back on him. The dead buck has better tine depth too but the picture I posted of Krusty was from July so he was still growing at that point.

I know you all just wanted the thread to die but this is kinda interesting:

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi630.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fuu22%2F206turboballs%2F8795235E-E182-4197-AD22-18AA41CFDEB2.jpg&hash=4c1114f187f0ba15d9b4414fbb0219406d3619c9)

 :IBCOOL:

Also doesn't appear to have quite the same width but it's hard with the angle of the shot and the laid back ears on the dead buck to really tell.

With the kill photo out I am sticking with my original guess, 155-162.  Great looking deer hard horned as well.

The guy is long arming the heck out of it. It could be 40" but your still only getting credit for the longest main and I still think it's 23". After seeing him rubbed I might give him a bit more mass, the mass is always hard for me to tell on a velvet buck. He's a great buck for sure!

being this was posted on the internet I can't see anything wrong with tossing up a link.  One thing if it was on a guy's phone not posted anywhere, but something else entirely if it's already posted elsewhere.

I was shocked at how much mass it still had with the velvet off.  Velvet always gets me on the guessing score.  But after seeing this one I am a little more confident in my guessing.

Definitely not 40" wide and your right the main beams are under whatever the spread is.

No doubt I would shoot this deer any day of the week and wouldn't care what the score was.  Deeper forks and the added G4 would improve the score massively but this is one that the score just wouldn't matter, it is a great buck.

Incredible buck for sure.  We had a thread a couple years back titled something like "Great bucks that don't score diddly" and this one might have been the winner.

I think Phool's measurements are pretty close, although I'd probably give him an extra inch or two here and there and wind up in the 165 neighborhood.
