I'm glad trapping season is here. I had a great deer season, and am usually kind of bumbed out when it's over. In the past I would spend the next 11 months scouting deer for next seaon. Now I have trapping to get me through the next 5 months. I can trap, and scout for deer, and bear at the same time........It's pretty awesome :chuckle:
I didn't plan on trapping for bobcat until a little later, but a friend of mine had a bobcat wipe out all her chickens. So I put a trap out yesturday afternoon, and got this little female today.
-
Awesome!! Great way to start the season!
That trap looks familiar. :chuckle: Congrats

I was able to get a few traps out on saturday. Its been a little tough with working a bunch of hours, and the flooding so far. I did get this little beaver, and 2 nice rats.

Got a big beaver tonite. While I was out there in the middle of the slough 2 other beaver were smacking their tales. They didnt like me much :dunno:
Also put a mink set out last sunday. No action yet with that.

what do you figure that beaver weighed?
I don't have a good scale. I tried our bathroom scale, but It is some kind of digital thing, and I couldn't figure it out. :chuckle: ... im guessing all of 50 pounds. I'm going to get myself a scale, so I can quit guessing.

Weigh yourself, then get back on scale holding the beaver, and then we'll you know do the math it will get you within a couple pounds.

Did you step on it then it comes on, wait till it zeros out then get on it? That's how our digital one works.

Broke it! That's a mighty big beav!! Haha

Got a small beaver today. Had to break my way out through the ice.
-
Also found some new ground today. The beaver basically destroyed the road here. They brought in a bunch of quarry spawls on top of 1-2 man rock. Should be able to pull something out of there next weekend.
-
Put my otter up today. It gets a little easier every time I do it. I love the otter :)

He did some impressive damage, but after a closer look I could see where some of the wire intersections were rusted. That made it easier to break through.

I was wondering how an otter would do in a cage, I had my suspicions it would be a battle just based on the rats I have caught. It seems if they can see daylight like a shallow water set with no cover I find they have bitten the cage a lot and they usually have there teeth locked around a wire and I have to pry them out of the trap. All my sets with cover like grass on the trap or tree cover they expire in one place and I can simply open the door and they fall out. My thoughts were if I catch an otter with that same behavior pattern I better have a stout built cage or some good cover over the trap maybe over time when I get to trap some ill make a log of their behavior once caught and how the trap was set. My buddy got one otter so far this year in a comstock set at a pinch point no tree cover no grass or anything over the trap and that thing TRASHED his trap! Broke the trigger wires bent the trigger rod bowed the doors so hard they were jammed shut he pulled the trap took it to the truck and pryed it open with a hatchet to get his prize catch out! How was yours set just curiose?
-
Wow Ethan it sounds like its time for some new traps!! That's crazy
-
I have never had an otter damage a trap if it was underwater. If they can get air, yes they can do a number on a trap and 1x2 wire in a land set is asking for trouble.
I do find it very unusual that an otter could do that much damage to a trap unless it could get air someway.

well this trap was at least a foot under water. I don't know for a fact it was an otter :dunno: by the size of the hole I assume it were an otter. Maybe a smaller size beaver......I don't know :dunno:.
Like I said previously......the wires had some rust. Regardless a beaver, or an otter, and some rust damage......it was impressive.
