First buck I saw Saturday was a big one 7x5 had a kicker on one side. Tall and heavy. I second guessed it and by the time I figured I would go after him he was already onto us. Seen a few decent 4 points after that but nothing special. The rut action was not going strong yet. Did see a couple bucks pushing does but not what I was expecting yet. Hopefully it gets better next weekend.

You into the snow?

Spent time at snow line Saturday. That's where bucks were pushing.

For what it's worth, I don't hesitate to shoot a buck like the 7x5 with a kicker that was tall and heavy like described with a Chiwawa tag day 1. :twocents: Hope you get a better one

Hope you still tag a good one. I actually happened to "see" not pass a 7x5 tall and heavy buck with that tag in 03, but was lucky enough to see him at 50 yds broadside a week later and have him on my wall. :chuckle:

Well I hope your buddy is willing to put some boots on the ground. If he is he could get a dandy. Or he will be one of those lucky road hunters like a guy I heard of last year shooting a bull elk and rolling it into the back of there pick up. Never my luck. Good luck to your "buddy"

I had a late tag this year and far as I'm concerned boots on the ground is a waste of time. Gotta drive and glass. Those bucks are always moving. We hiked quit a bit and would see a couple does and 2pts. Saw way more deer driving and glassing.

Not many deer in the lower Tyee area yet. Spent some time in there today and only saw a handful of deer.

Rut fired early about one solid week early.  Second estrous I assume will fire a week early as well.  Bucks are tired.  Look for them on the ground.

Part of the problem is if the snow hasn't moved most of the does down the Big boys aren't forced to come down to breed when they can do it up high. This next round of wet/windy weather with high snow levels doesn't help. There is suppose to be another cold front next week so hopefully that helps to move them. Like they say hunt at snow line

My buddy smacked a decent 3x4 with eye guards yesterday. Not many deer moving around yet. Wish the weather would have came sooner.

I hunted hard and passed 6 deer in the 150-165 class holding out for a 170 plus. I stuck to my goal and last day I had to hunt I ended up taking a 3 point on the way back to break camp. I seen probably 5-600 deer the 8 days I hunted the tag just not the big deer I was after.

Sounds like a great hunt. To bad you couldn't find the monster but you spent lots of time in the woods looking at bucks, saw tons of deer it sounds like, and ended up going home with some meat in the freezer. Good work

The big boys were still up high in the Chiwawa last weekend. Looks like some survived to pass on their genes.

I was up there last weekend getting Xmas trees in Swakane and Chiwawa.  Didn't see a single deer in some of the transition areas where I normally see them, and the tracks in the snow all appeared pretty old.  Think a lot of the deer already migrated lower with the earlier snows, and there are still some up higher that have yet to come down.   The clear cold weather last week didn't give them any reason to move around.
