Title: herron?
Post by: jeepster on November 10, 2015, 10:53:45 AM
Anybody use a herron decoy with thier ducks?  I've heard that they can increase realism to your spread....

I have always thought about it but seems to bulky for a walk in like I do. Interested to hear what others experienced.

I had a friend that had one, called it a "confidence" decoy...
Only time he ever noticed it doing anything extra was when another heron came in and kicked the living...(&%$) out of it.
Provided some entertainment on a slow day, but he was pretty upset that it got wrecked,

Just a confidence decoy.  An extra expense and weight to carry in.

Just a confidence decoy.  An extra expense and weight to carry in.

This is how I feel also. Better off carrying another couple duck or goose decoys.

I’d think a swan decoy would be a better confidence decoy.  I don’t have anything to back that up other than just observing ducks around swans.  That and they stand out and can be seen for miles.

Confidence decoy. Mine works great.
You have to put it a ways away from you.
I've had it at the end of a pond and the ducks that come by , outside the dekes, do a pylon turn around the heron and come right back in.
Had a bird watcher in Stanwood, sneak up on my decoy and take pictures of it. Scared the hell out of him when I started telling him it was fake.

Never tried a heron, but over here, a hand full of coot decoys up next to shore and a little way away from the main spread helps.

Reminds me of that guy out on Fir island that would put his snow goose decoys right next to the road and laugh all season long as your busses full of Asians from Canada would stop gawk, and take pictures

Couple of cheap gull decoys work better then the heron. I tried a homemade white egret decoy on time and it worked better then the heron decoy.. I have had too many herons come into my spread and if birds were flying it would scare them away. If it sat there, nothing would come in, but other herons.
