Title: Fluke?!
Post by: Schmalzfam on November 16, 2015, 06:38:08 AM
We headed East this weekend for the late hunt and I'm just curious how many others hunted for whitetail, too.
Friday was pretty insane.
Saw a nice amount of bucks Friday, but unfortunately they were still pretty spooky, actually very spooky.
They never gave me more than 30 seconds, sometimes just catching a glimpse and attempting to catch back up to them, was the best I could do.
Saturday,  there was some heavy rain and I believe they were in the thick cover, plus more hunters. We didn't see much in Saturday.
Sunday was a cool day though saw some mulies, a moose and a white weasel.
Saw more whitetail  bucks, as well. We never saw anything under 4 points and not the small basket heads either. My guess is maybe the smaller ones were taken during the general season?
I'm just wondering if this is the norm for over there or was it just luck?
Obviously getting one would've been awesome. I must say though seeing that many bucks, all on public land, in an area I've never even scouted felt pretty darn good.
I love just being in the woods and enjoy all the crazy stuff you come across.
I haven't seen much talk on here abut the late whitetail hunt. Kinda interesting.  Anyone have an amazing late whitetail hunt, too?

We went into the refuge, honestly way too many hunters. I didn't last 20 mins. Before saying bag this.
I tried a couple different entries to it, as well. All very crowded.
Definitely have an idea on how to approach it differently next year.
But, even coming home empty handed, I still enjoyed it.

We hunted 111 and 117 Sunday-Wednesday last week and saw very few deer, all pretty spooky. Went back up Friday night and checked out a new spot Saturday morning. Hiked about a mile in and got soaked. Sat down under a big P-pine at eleven my GF harvested her first deer! Great time in the woods.

Ive hunted the northeast for at least 20 years...first off, the areas up there aren't created equal. Some are good, sone arent. It is not a fluke to go whitetail hunting and see several bucks...you just got lucky and fell into a good spot on a good day. You aren't going to hunt and have days like that everyday up there without some scouting and area familiarization...
