Title: Tested out the new Kimber and Shield!
Post by: Mongo Hunter on November 17, 2015, 09:29:06 AM
So last Saturday I got to go to Threat Dynamics and run some rounds through my new guns I bought a few months ago (about time right?). So first up was my wifes S&W Shield

Shield First Impressions: Not quite as snappy as I was expecting. Fairly accurate I found mine consistently shot a bit low but not crazy low. The trigger needs work, I'm not a trigger snob and maybe its just cause I'm used to Glocks but I didn't dig the trigger. its fine for what its purpose is, but S&W put a safety on this gun I think they could have lightened the trigger just a hair and make it a bit cleaner. this of course could change with more shooting. 1 stove pipe not a big deal, gun is brand new and we were shooting budget ammo, also could have been my wife limp wristed it.

Kimber Custom 2 TLE: Oh dear god I LOVE THIS GUN! I put 150rds of 230g Magtech though it which I know is not enough for break in but I had ZERO malfunctions while firing. Also I was using Kimbers standard 8rd mags. sights were dead on, trigger was perfect.

Only had 2 hiccups and it was operator (or loader) error. my wife loaded 2 mags and she didn't hit the back of the mag on the bench to make sure all the rounds were seated, this cause the gun to not go all the way into battery when I let the slide go. after that I made sure I hit them on the bench and had no more problems.

The fist picture attached is the first 3 mags through the gun at 5 yards. just wanted a function and sight check. as you can see all is good.

Second picture is the wife using it and we are play battle ship!

I have a Kimber combat, custom carry, with laser sight in .45.

Me like.

Bad guys might not.

Was the shield a compact? For a striker style trigger, I hear the the Shield is not to bad? :dunno:

Yep I love that place. I wish they would open one in Washington.

The shield is S&W's single stack compact 9mm. And yeah the trigger is not bad for what it is and admittedly im used to Glocks. But the trigger on the shield feels a tad heavy and when it breaks it makes almost a "crack" compared to a Glock you get just a light "click". Also I don't like the take up or play at the beginning of the trigger pull in the shield again compaired to a Glock you have a spongyness but a consistent feedback just before you hit the wall.

Like i said its not a deal breaker by any means and I may have some bias. I'm sure with more shooting you could easily get used to it, but for me personally I think it could use some tweaking especialy since mine came with the manual saftey.

A Shield has been on my radar for a while now...I'd like to use one for a carry gun. Good to hear your review of the trigger.

I can't say you would regret it. As a whole the shield is a home run. Its inexpensive (under $400), reliable, good sights and comes with 2 different size magazines which the Glock does not and I wish it did. I literally bought the shield a week before Glock released their single stack 9 lol. Now would I replace my Glock 26 with the shield? Probly not but that's because the 26 fills all my needs, but if my needs were to change I curtainly would have zero isssue with carrying the shield. And the trigger really is my only gripe and I think if it bugged me too much I'm sure there is an aftermarket replacement, but at this moment it's not necessary.

I'm glad you get one with a pinky extension. from my understanding when they were first released they were all flush fit mags. in any case my 26 came that way and I hate having to order extra parts to get it like I want it. they give me 3 mags with the gen 4 they couldn't give me 1 with a 2 shot extension?
