Title: 45 caliber minimum for elk
Post by: kyles_88 on November 19, 2015, 10:18:24 AM
So in reading the regs it says a muzzle loader must be at least 45 caliber to be legal for elk hunting.  OK no problem I have a 50 but does that also mean that the projectile I'm shooting must be at least 45 caliber?  I'm looking at buying a box of 300 gr sierra sports master bullets in .429 and just wanting to make sure it is legal for elk before I do.

Meh, go hunting.  No LEO is going to make you pull the bullet and measure it with a caliper.  At the very minimum, you're following the intent of the law by using a suitable bullet for the game you're pursuing.

You're fine.  Legally and morally.  The muzzle loader is 50 caliber, the bullet is what is smaller.  Tons of guys shoot sabot bullets.
