I'm heading down for thanksgiving at my family's place in Puyallup. I'm thinking I'll take the boat and my brother and I can do a bit of hunting on the nisqually Friday afternoon. I've never hunted that area does anyone have any advise?

Hunting the Delta can be good if you know where to set up on which tide. The mud down there can be extremely dangerous and loss of life is not uncommon! Knowing the tides are key. This is a graf on that day. As you can see ,the afternoon the tide goes from a 13' down to 5'... Huge tide change means ducks are moving to the mud flats or oysters beds. Your decoys need at least 12-16 oz weights just to hold with all that water movement.Have a safe trip and I hope this helps

It's looking like it's going to be a bluebird day. Is there any timber on the river a guy could hunt?

Looking at the tides for that morning, you won't be able to launch very early - no water. Large incoming tide will mean birds will follow the water in. You'll be able to go most anywhere at high tide so my advice would be to launch as early as is safe with the water level, motor carefully either out to the Reach and set up on any of the unoccupied salt grass flats or make a trip up McAllister Cr. Either way, most everything will get covered for a short time at high tide. Best of luck and Happy Thanksgiving.

Nisqually can be great and it can drive you crazy! It can also kill you.
Thursday/Friday is going to be a *censored* show down there but a fair amount of birds are moving right now.
The flooded grass tops hunt great but the water moves very quickly and if your boat gets stuck in the mud it will be a long wait for the next tide.
Don't leave your boat to retrieve birds or deeks unless you know the mud. A guy had to be rescued by the Coast Guard last week after getting stuck.
Be safe ... have fun!!

Will the dogs be ok in the mud? Should I bring a little paddle around for retrieving? I hunt The Skagit flats so I get how spooky mud and tides can get, but I don't know that mud.

I don't hunt with dogs but i haven't heard of guys having trouble with dogs in the mud. Most of the mud is firm enough to walk quickly on but I've sunk to my crotch and needed my kayak to pull myself out.
If you go at high tide it will be less of an issue.
