I first started putting Halloween masks on my head rests duck hunting a few years back. I would get to the parking spot first and other guys would come over to ask where I was going to hunt.
I run down the passenger side window and they all jump at the ghoul mask on the head rest.
Than I got the idea that car head lights hitting the rig made it look like someone was sitting in the seat. So now I have masks on all the head rests.
A game agent checked me two years ago and thought it was real creepy. He asked me why I had them on head rests. "I said because I needed someone to talk too." :chuckle:
Walked off shaking his head.
Sooo I would say make your truck creepy and have some blinking leds.

on the same thought, if your place is scary looking people will tend to go elsewhere.
Also, the neighbors have a huge black mastiff that I have no doubt would eat a burglar if given the chance.

LOL! I love dogs but not sure I want to sacrifice my entire backyard to mastiff droppings! :chuckle:

Completely fenced in property, gates that lock, motion lights, post your property, dogs, etc. . Just need to make your place less desirable than your neighbours place, so they move on to the house down the street. :tup:

I have been very lucky so far with no break-ins but my place is lit up on all sides at night with dusk to dawn led's and put up various warning signs at all access points and everything is locked up tight. I think the more you make your property less desirable for thieves and tweekers the better off you'll be !!

As far as the vehicle goes, I just make sure there is nothing in the truck to tempt anyone. Nothing on the seats, nothing in the console, not even a receipt or candy bar or a flashlight. It's either hidden, or not in the vehicle. And NO CHANGE anywhere!

Yup, Dogs. Mine have deterred break in attempts and have alerted me to prowlers. I can hear the Chessies in the house with the windows and doors shut... when Im at the other end of the property in the garden.Chessies are great! I think they are the best combo of a hunting dog and gaurd dog!.thugs dont step foot on my place. CHIEF wont let them!

I know every kid by name in our neighborhood. I lock everything. When I walk to the mailbox, I have a gun belt or shoulder holster on. If there's a strange car sitting in the street with someone in it, I walk to the front of it and noticeably take a photo. Others do this, too. Every house on our street has been egged, had graffiti painted on their fences, or had their cars ransacked...except ours - fingers crossed!
:yeah: If someone is parked in my neighborhood that I don't know, I go talk to them. If your hair is raising on the back of your neck, call the cops and let them figure it out.
A few years ago, 2 kids were parked outside my neighbors house (who was on vacation out of country). I approached the car and asked the driver if he needed help finding his destination. He told me he was just waiting for his buddy "Joey". I said, "Well, Joey doesn't live in that house, that house, that house, that house, or that house. So where does Joey live?" They got my point and told me they would move their car... And they did.... to the curb in front of MY house this time.
By now I'm a little weirded out by these kids and I call the police. I say "Hey, if you guys get the vibe that these kids aren't an issue, I'll go to bed. I just want a professional opinion here because I just got back from Baghdad and if you ask my instincts, they're up to something." No more than 2 minutes later, their are two cops cars cornering this car with lights. I think the Iraq vet card really helped... maybe they're afraid I'd go PTSD on them or something( :chuckle:). One kid ended up getting arrested for warrants and the cop sat with the other kid because he was visibly high and wasn't allowed to drive. They impounded the car. Listen to your spidey senses guys.
Oh... Best part of the story was apparently "Joey" is real. He was my new neighbors kid that was planning on sneaking out that night! :chuckle: :chuckle:

I've tried the fence, dogs, alarm etc. I quit locking my door because I got tired of having to fix it when it got kicked in. I won't go into detail publicly on the steps I took to prevent or to catch these parasites, but eventually I moved.

We gated our long driveway. It seems to keep most of the driveup..."does cathy live here?" casing of the place. However, we still get a few that walk in every year. I greet them while visibly carrying and letting my dog bark and circle them like a shark. If they come up the driveway they are an uninvited guest and are told to leave. If they come overland through the woods, they are a trespassing crook and they get the very cold, angry shoulder from me and the cops get called. Not that the cops come......but I will walk them out to the road and tell them to take a hike the cops are on their way. They often show up in the middle of the day when they think I won't be home. I always love the look on their face when I pop up and ask the WTH they're doing walking around my house? "I'm lost" seems to be the best they can come up with.
I have heard that sticking a gun in thier face tends to send the correct message. Ive never done such a thing, but i hear the word gets around in the dead beat circles pretty damn quick! ;)

I was robbed once and was literally walking in my front door a min and 30 seconds after the door was kicked in (Alarm, timer which would call my cell phone) and I didn't see the car leave. They CAN rob and be gone in under a minute. Hard to imagine but if you are in the get away car and two guys go in.....30 seconds is enough time to grab a handful. Yes, the left a lot of things, but grabbed what they could.

My experience is that most of these events happen during daylight. They come, knock on the door to verify no one is home. They knock a LONG time and even on a double wide size home will knock on both the front and back door to be sure. If you answer, they are looking for directions, a gallon of gas, or for their buddy "James". (who never lived there)
The one time I just waited quietly inside hoping they would kick the door in, they didn't.
I'll also say that just like the old tv show "It takes a thief", it happens FAST. I was robbed once and was literally walking in my front door a min and 30 seconds after the door was kicked in (Alarm, timer which would call my cell phone) and I didn't see the car leave. They CAN rob and be gone in under a minute. Hard to imagine but if you are in the get away car and two guys go in.....30 seconds is enough time to grab a handful. Yes, the left a lot of things, but grabbed what they could.
I still say shoot em all :tup:
That's why I say to have at least one conspicuous camera at the door. It helps for the package theft idiots, too.
There was a lot of that day time stuff going on in my neighborhood. I never got hit, but a couple on my street did.
I called the cops on the magazine seller dude that I have never before seen in the neighborhood, as well as another suspicious car. The problems went away shortly after. Stay vigilant. I would suspect that most burglaries involve at least some casing beforehand.

Want to point out that your relationship with your local authorities makes a HUGE difference. In Sunnyside, that didn't exist. They were there to come an hour later and do the paperwork and grill you if they felt YOU did something wrong.
Happy to say I appreciate the current local LEO that I get to work with. He's a good man and an example of how it's supposed to work.

Make a kit so I cannot be sued.
1. Create a circuit board with proximity sensor, wireless connection and GPS chip on it.
2. Get a CO2 bottle that screws into a release trigger
3. The release trigger would attach into a perforated line.
4. The perforated line would go into a packet of fishing egg dye (The consumer's choice of dye).
5. Write a little software for a laptop or mobile phone.
The consumer will get a notice of package being moved. Consumer can switch from 100 feet to a mile or so before package explodes dye all over. Or the consumer can monitor the package and race to the location and ignite the package when they get close so they can watch the carnage.
The cost would be around a 100 dollars which no one would pay. BUT if it was around 20 people would buy it.

When the cops show up and ask if you are missing a package you say well no... Or yes, if you have some and call out what the content is so they cannot tie it back to you.
Because you just messed up their rig. And they will be calling the cops because they are stupid enough to steal they are stupid to call the cops they were wronged.

Burglars want to sneak around unnoticed, a barking dog of any size is a great deterrent. Our little 16lber isn't much for guarding anything,but we sure as hell know if someone is on the property.
