Title: Machias' 2015/16 Season
Post by: Machias on November 29, 2015, 01:40:58 PM
On the board today with a nice fat skunk.  :)  I only have three cage traps set right now specifically for skunk.  Trapping out at a horse farm.  I don't start setting any leghold for another couple of weeks.  Can't set water sets until after 1 Dec.  So a little slow right now.  First time using Acetone and all I can say is WOW  :yike:  Less than 10 seconds after I injected the skunk and it was dead!  No smell, no mess, very nice!!

Nope, I have a 12 foot telescoping pole.  Skunk never got nervous at all.

I am going to specifically target some skunks this year. Have you ever used those "no spray" tube traps and do they work worth a darn? I was thinking of going with some store bought traps through F&T and get set up for gassing them. On the other hand I hear good things about injecting and there are those that swear by a .22 in the chest. My guess is that none of them are full proof.

I have three of the tube traps.  If I had it to do all over I would not buy them.  I would just use cage traps and inject them.  .22 to the head or chest is about 50% spray 50% no spray.  Injecting is about 95%.  This skunk was very laid back. took 12cc in the chest and literally laid down and was dead in just about 7 or 8 seconds.  No smell.  I just skinned her and no odor at all.

Good to know!

Is a 10x10x24 big enough?

Thanks Fred!

Yes it would be.  Most of mine are just caught in my coon cage traps, but the size you mentioned will work just fine.

Skunk will go in a 7x7x24 trap just fine. before you go setting traps for skunks be sure your syringe can go through the side all the way, the complete syringe not just the needle.

Found this B&B Syringe http://www.fntpost.com/Products/B+B+Syringe

Says it will screw onto a broom/paint handle. I have an expandable paint handle that extends out to 12 feet.

What size needle and where on the skunk do you inject?

Are you using a heavy gauge needle like those used on livestock?

Post by: pnwmtnmn on November 29, 2015, 09:03:37 PM
I use a expandable paint handle, heavy gauge livestock needle, inject in the heart lungs area.

When you get the assembly just be sure that the syringe fits through the 1x1 inch mesh of the cage. On all my traps that I use for skunks I have cut larger openings in the mesh to get the syringe through, one on each side and one on the end.

I'm pretty sure it's a 16 gauge needle and pnwmtnmn is right on the money, I had to do the same thing to my cage traps.  I inject it right behind the front shoulder, about 12 cc of Acetone.

Where do you buy the acetone and what brand do you use?  I had to use nail polish remover once and it was not efficient. I know a guy who uses Methyl Ethyl Ketone but I can't find it in anything smaller than gallon cans.

I get it in quart cans at Home Depot in the paint section. Quart is the smallest I have found it in.

Won't be too much happening on this thread for a little longer.  I don't really dive into it until the fur primes up here and that is at least a few more days.  Plus I wait to set any K-9 sets until after deer season since they run deer with hounds here.  I'd have issues for certain.  Probably try and catch some beaver the next couple of weeks and get some bait in the freezer.  I'm kicking around the idea of taking a week and hitting the mountains along the West Virginia border and see if I can put up a few bobcats and coyotes.

Caught #3 tonight.  Next weekend I'm finally going to start trapping fox, bobcat, coyotes, otter and beaver with coni's and legholds.  Can't wait.  Was going to start this past weekend but we were at 72 degrees.

We haven't heard or seen anything here from you the last couple of days.
Did you skin that skunk with the white back.  The one that has a lot of white?
I would be interested in purchasing it if you did if the price is right.  Send "me a PM"

Well with the crazy weather we have been having, Christmas Day was 75 degrees, I just now made a few sets.  I put out 3 dog proofs and 3 MB 450s for some chicken stealing fox and coon and nabbed a coon in one of the fox sets.  I also set out 2 beaver sets and had a 44 pounder today.  A little excited about this new farm I got permission to trap.  Should catch several fox, otter, beaver and saw some muskrat sign.  Might even manage to snag a bobcat and a coyote on this property.  Tons of possum and coons, but I'm hoping to avoid them as much as possible.

I use a telescoping pole with a syringe on the end and inject 10 cc of Acetone into their lungs.  They are dead usually in under 10 seconds.

What a GREAT morning.  My Grandson is up from Florida and flies out this afternoon.  So I got to take him out and run the couple of sets I have out.  Scored on a nice 49 pound beaver.  The look on his face and the excitement made my whole season today.  :)

There used to be a lot of stripped Skunks around here 30 years ago, now it is rare to even see one ran over on the highway. Maybe it's the lack of old barns to live under and fewer chicken coops to raid.

No, any contact with other yotes or fox will only spread the mange.  Bury it, burn it or in this case I put it in a heavy trash bag and it goes into the landfill.

Western VA does, Eastern VA does not.  This is the first year I have had access to a farm that has otter.

The trapping regs do not limit the otter catch and does not state closed counties in eastern Wa.
This is the first year I've been able to trap otter in grant county.

My biggest beaver so far for this season, 59 pounds.

Here is a good example of why you should always cable your coni's, I caught this beaver in the far channel.  You can't tell but the bank is fairly steep and he still managed to get over to the other channel and even set off my other 330.

So we have this "epic" snow storm and blizzard hitting us right now.  Yesterday I set off all my traps as it may be a few days before I can get around here.  I get home today and get all settled in for the next day or so too wait on this 30-32 inches of snow and my phone goes off.  It's the horse farm owner, hey you have another skunk in the trap.  REALLY?   :chuckle:  :bash:  So I go out and dispatch a really nice fat skunk and make it home just before the roads are turning treacherous!!  :)  That makes #5 from this spot.

Been stuck at home for the last three days snowed in so I got my freezer about cleaned out and all my fur put up.  Skinned and fleshed 20 beaver tails today, sending them off to get tanned.  $13 per tail and they do a really nice job and have several different colors.

I saw a pair of cowboy boots made with Beaver tails in Montana about ten years ago.  Dam,  :bash: I couldn't bring myself to buy them.  I think they wanted something like $350.00 for them.

Well Fred, it looks like you might have a few more days before you get out (I've been watching TV on you guys)  so you can get some more of those stinkers.   :chuckle:  Tan those stinkers and make some gloves or hats out of them.  JC   :hello:

I was finally able to get a few sets out yesterday.  I haven't been able to get into my areas due to the heavy snow we got last weekend.  Anyways I have 5 beaver and otter sets out and 3 coyote/fox sets out.  Picked up a really nice beaver and a decent male fox today.  Caught the fox in a MB 650.  Zero pad damage.  Love these MBs.  The beaver was DRT in a Belisle 330, right behind the ears.  Weighed in at 51 pounds!

One of the prettier reds I have caught.  The photo does not do his color justice.  Dirt Hole set and a MB450.  Zero pad damage.

Boy, I have no expertise in fox trapping. Would love to catch one but never been where there are any.
Shot in the dark though. I wonder if he might be more apt to  enter with a double door trap.

I think I missed an otter today, had a Belisle 220 mangled and bent.  It was set under water in a neat little spot that I suspected an otter was using to get into a pond under the ice.  Sat for 10 days and nothing and then today the trigger was destroyed and on of the bars was slightly bent.

Got threatened a couple of days ago.  Trapped 6 beaver for a guy on his property and now someone from a HOA is asking the board to bring charges against me.  :)  The HOA's covenant expired in 1999 and they have no rules or regulations, so the landowner told him to pound sand.

Thanks guys, having fun this year and only running about 8 to 12 traps at a time so it's been slow and steady, which is good as some night I spend a couple of hours just trying to drive to my spots to check traps.

I hear you on that ! Between bobcat and Marten traps it's 4-5 hours round trip but well worth it!!

Well what a great check today.  5 sets and had one snapped 330 due to heavy rain and one that was untouched.  But the other 3 held a nice big beaver, a medium beaver and a nice otter!!

This medium beaver was caught in the crossover in the second photo

When I took this photo I though it was beaver #3, didn't realize it was an otter until I got over to him.  :)

So I said a little prayer this morning for no skunks since I forgot my syringe pole at home.  Must have been some miscommunication because I had 2 waiting for me this morning!  :)

Let skunk #1 go, very docile and really big, great fur and a nice big white stripe. Wished I had my syringe pole!

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi770.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx342%2FMach3109%2F12805816_10206012290242323_8472530006655792768_n.jpg&hash=aa926a410d40126420c1f9567a80275efca71e3e) (http://s770.photobucket.com/user/Mach3109/media/12805816_10206012290242323_8472530006655792768_n.jpg.html)

Swung by the house and picked up the pole for skunk #2.  This little stinker was very aggressive and bite the pole, first one I had do that.
