Yesterday morning, my wife left a gate open and our two young beagles took off. The few times they've ran off before, they are usually back within a few hours. Yesterday they took off around 0800 and haven't been seen or heard since. We live in the Deep Creek area, North of Medical Lake.
With a low around 15 degrees last night and coyotes everywhere, it's not looking good for Hoot 'n' Annie. They were very good and sweet dogs. I am sure going to miss their good natured spirit and presence. They never even got to hunt up in the mountains this winter, we were going to go yesterday for the first time :'(
Your prayers are appreciated. If by some miracle, they are alive and well, please don't hesitate to contact me.
-
Damn sorry to hear this Jonathon. Did they have collars and tags?
-
They don't sleep with them on and she hadn't put them on yet, they were just going out for a nature call before breakfast.
They are not wearing their collars.
-
O crap. We'll keep our ears open.
You check with Scraps?
-
Yeah, we're going to keep an eye on all the collection points for the next few days.
Any longer than that and it's impossible to imagine them surviving the coyotes and the cold.

I lost a German Shorthair about 10 years ago while hunting in the Blues. It was cold like it is now. I was sick, terribly sick to be honest. Freckles was my first dog. After I lost her, I stopped at a couple houses. These were the closest houses to where I lost her and this was 10+ miles away. I left notes at the residences and went home. I literally drove out of there knowing she was never to be seen again. I received a phone call 17 days later from one of the people I left a note with. She had wandered into their yard. 17 freaking days out in remote country, with Coyotes, Bears and Cats nearby. I wouldn't give up yet. There's hope for sure that your pups will return.
-
That blows. I really hope those two make their way back to your place today... cold and hungry, but safe and sound. The goof balls may just be having a heck of a run. Do you have them M-chipped?
-
Also keep an eye on and post it up on Craigslist

Hopefully so, and yes. Thanks RJ.
-
Hope they make it home safe!!

If you haven't already, post on Facebook, be sure the post is set to Public, and ask people to share. I've seen this several times in Wenatchee area, and nearly every time the dog is found and united with the owners. I also have a friend back east who had his stolen, the coverage was so widespread on social media the "rescuer" (who grabbed his pet off the street and took him 60 miles away) contacted him and returned his pet.
Sure hope you get them back - it's a sick feeling for sure.
-
Hoping for the best
-
Any word?
-
Wondering the same thing. Any news on the missing wanderers?
-
I'm Hoping and Praying they are in a warm room getting loved on by the OP
-
Hi guys. Sorry, I've been out looking for them and posting reward signs. Annie was found last night about 3.5 miles from home. She was picked up by a nice lady that got the message from someone else about where she belonged. She is okay, very weak and chilled.
Hoot is still missing. Hopefully he found a warm enough place to stay alive. I will be taking Annie out that way to look for him this afternoon. Praying the poor little guy is still alive.
-
Good luck Jonathon. I hope this has a happy ending. I can't even imagine how awful it must feel.
-
Thank you. It's tough knowing that my little buddy is still out there probably. Hopefully somebody else picked him up.
Highs in the 20s for the last several days :'(
-
Beagles are tougher than you think. I had a few when I lived back east in upstate NY. They slept outside in their dog house when it was 10 below. Maybe they chased a deer but they usually can find there way home on their own. Don't give up on him.
-
Best of luck on your search this afternoon. I have a good feeling that old Hoot is OK. I betcha he's wandered into somebody's place and has been fed... I 'm hoping you get a call today ;). I just think this one is gonna turn out OK and Annie will have her buddy at your place very soon. Beagles are nice dogs and I think someone will (or has) seen the male and will do the right thing.
-
Half way there Bud! Hoot will show up.
-
Thanks for the words of encouragement Bob and RJ. I know they are tougher than I think of them. I can never ask for anything again if Hoot is found. What's concerning me is what might have caused them to separate...they are very tight knit. I don't think that something chased them and kill one of them because Annie isn't anywhere near as fast as Hoot. I think he'd be the one to get away in that situation.
-
Sorry to hear this. Im with phantom, hopefully someone found him and is taking care of him, just trying figure how to find you guys.
Dogs are tougher and smarter than we give them credit for.
Fingers crossed for you!
-
Tons of situational variations that could have separated them. I know that most folks are good at heart and will stop if they see a wandering pup and lend a helping hand. Just a couple of days ago, my wife and I were heading into town and saw a mini pincher (spelling?) wandering at the end of a long country driveway without a collar. We drove down the driveway and eventually saw the owner calling for the dog. If we hadn't had seen that, Kim was ready to load the pup up and start looking for his owner ;). Again, good luck on your afternoon search.
-
We are canvassing the area he might be in, it's a big area since he's been gone so long. Hopefully he's not moving fast, I doubt he is.
I will keep you guys updated as I can, thanks for your kind words.
-
hope turns out good... good luck.
-
I don't know about the legality of this (folks do it around where I live) but perhaps placing a flyer in some mail boxes with a pic of Hoot and some brief text "have you seen me, please call my owner at XXX-XXXX)?
-
 I'm doing something to that effect. Putting flyers in actual mailboxes is against the law but I am not exactly out to follow every rule right now.
-
Good luck, bud. Hope it ends up well for everyone.
Keep at it.
-
Thanks J
-
Flyers is how I got my yellow pup back. Took 6 days so don't give up!
-
That's good to hear, I am glad you got your pup  At least it is going to warm up for the next few days. This friggin cold is tough weather to survive in with no drinkable water. Lot of open space out here but as long as he can stay away from the coyotes (and thieves), he should be okay.
-
Just thought of another thing. Perhaps you could check with the Post Office see if any of the rural mail delivery folks, who work those big routes where Hoot may have been running, have seen a beagle on their rounds for the past few days? Are there rural newspaper delivery routes in the area (perhaps check with them also)?
-
Good idea, I will check in with them!
-
Any news on Hoot today JS?
-
I was out looking for Hoot last night until late. Hiking around with Annie, trying to find where he might have been. It's been a rough night, my wife was very close to Hoot. Having Annie back is a dream come true but it's so sad the way she can't stop looking for him. They were certainly a package deal and they were very bonded. She's been very shy and unmotivated.
-
Did you check with the vet clinics there in Medical Lake/Cheney? Often folks will drop by with found dogs.
-
Yeah, we're going to really hit the vets/pet stores/feed stores tonight after work.
-
oops didn't mean Cheney, meant airway heights, but you knew that
-
you did say they were microchipped right.
If so call the MC company and make sure your contact info is up to date
-
Yeah it is up to date. I sure hope he is inside a nice warm building right now.
-

We're all pulling for the safe return of old Hoot. Do you have feelers out at more distant animal shelters? Who knows, perhaps somebody picked him up passing through and took him to a shelter on their way farther west, south, etc.? Trying to think of what I would do if I was passing through that area and found a collarless pup. I may have picked him up and perhaps taken him to a shelter on the way home to wherever I was traveling? Just thinking out loud.
-
That's the unfortunate thing...this happened on Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend so that's very possible :'(
-
Hoot when I got him...
-
Hoot a few days before he went missing
-
Fine looking pup mister. Any leads today? RJ
-
Yesterday I spoke with somebody who had seen them but that was only day after they'd been on the loose. They were still together at that time. It's been 3 days since then.
I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to have a missing child. This is bad enough.
-
Hoot is lost, gone but not forgotten. I miss you buddy.
If by chance he's still alive wandering, stolen or fostered, I hope he has a happy rest of his life. Maybe we'll be blessed enough to see him again.
I will miss him horribly. I got him as a tiny handful of a puppy and only had a few months with him. Annie is depressed and she howls for him constantly. I have hardly slept since Sunday and even then, I wake up thinking he's home.
This is the hardest thing I've gone through except for the deaths of family and friends.
-
So very sorry
-
Thank you for your thoughts everyone. KoR, thank you.
If by some miracle, my little buddy Hoot comes home, I will let you know.
-
Damn sorry Jonathan.
-
Call me the silly optimist Jonathan, but I have an odd feeling you'll see him again. You've plastered your area with flyers and beagles are resilient little hounds. I'm just hanging on to the thought that somebody, somewhere, has taken old Hoot in and he's eating like a fat rat, dining on food items that aren't necessarily good for a hunting dog. I sincerely hope this turns out for the best and in the near future you'll be posting some great news here.
-
In spite of my pessimism, I know there is hope. I am going to make a bunch of 4'x8' plywood signs and request to post them in fields at all the choke points of major roads and highways in the area.

:yeah:
When my wife and I were in our early 20's we had a Blue Heeler pup, Danner was his name and he was about 6 months old, also at the time we had two children 5 and 2 years old. One Saturday afternoon we noticed Danner was not in the house, one of the kids must have let him out on accident, as soon as we noticed he was not around we searched high and low for him all weekend, unfortunately we had no luck in finding him, the kids were super bummed.
We plastered lost dog flyers with a picture of him all over east Vancouver and Camas. After a month goes by we had pretty much given up hope of finding him, we had no leads and not even one phone call of a possible sighting, and then one night the phone rings at dinner time, it's an elderly lady and she says "I think my grandson stole your dog", she tells us that she stopped by to visit him one day and noticed he had a dog, which he didn't have before, she started asking him questions and he said the dog was wondering in front of our neighborhood and abandoned and so he brought it home, well she didn't tell her grandson that she took our phone off of his dog tags that were still on his collar.
Early the next day my brother and I stopped by the kids apartment to get the pup, we should have just called the local LEO but we didn't, we knocked on his door and the kid answered, I asked him for my dog, and he says no that he doesn't have it, but you can hear the dog in the background going crazy after he heard my voice, so we gave him two options and luckily for him he picked option number one.
Even today I still remember the joy on my kids faces as we walked in the house with Danner, they were so excited to have him home, and just think we had almost given up all hope of ever finding him, so don't give up just yet.
-
Thanks for sharing that, I am glad you got the pup back.
People who steal dogs confuse me. I will need to exercise serious restraint if I find myself in that situation.
-
Well it has been more than two months since I've seen my good friend Hoot. We all sure miss him. It's been a tough time, every now and then it really hits home. Annie (female) is very reserved now and not as playful as she used to be. She loves to hunt and train still but it's still hard to hear her on a track and not him too.
We have gotten many leads based on all the large signs in the area. I've knocked on hundreds and hundreds of doors and spoken with probably 1,000+ people. It's tough coming to terms when you go in and out of closure. I know he was "just a dog" but he sure was a special part of our family. He was young but the hundreds of hours of training and bonding makes it feel like he'd been around a lot longer.
We have another male, Waylon, an affable rascal. He picked Annie's spirits up considerably. She still breaks my heart, she'll sit at the far corner of the fence and howl mournfully the way a Husky will. She'll curl up in the gravel waiting for Hoot to come home, it can be raining or snowing and she'll stay out until I kennel her late at night.
-
Here is Waylon. The shoe eater.
-
Cute little bugger, hopefully Annie will show him the ropes and they will make a dynamic duo for you. I try to tell myself mine are "just dogs" too but it never gets easier losing one regardless of the circumstance whether it's your first or tenth dog.
Keep the faith and still hoping everything works out for ya.
-
Thank you. Yes she is a really good mentor to him even though she's only a young dog herself.
I got a call on Hoot today - nice lady to try and help but the dog was like a boxer mix
-
They're never "just a dog" bud. Sorry he never turned up. The new one sure is a good looking pup.
-
Handsome little guy. Give him a snout "honk" for me ;)
-
hopefully he is ok and by some miracle. he is reunited with you. i have 2 dogs and they have been with each other since they were pups! there getting old now i seen it in there face every day. there family they make me feel good when im down. there like my kids. coot is in my prayer's. i will pray he makes it home to you! hopefully he is warm and some one will return him to you.
-
Multiple sightings of a dog about 15 miles from our place. Seen in the same area over a 10 day period. Three calls in a week from different folks.
I've been down there, calling for him, knocking on doors, putting out jackets for scent, posting signs, and walking the other dogs. Nothing yet. Really crazy to think he could still be out there :dunno:
-
That sure would be something. Hope it could be him.
-
Thanks man
-
hey man guessing its too late on this but just found it. anything new. Lost dogs like that make me feel bad no matter what. if anything new I'd appreciate it thanks man.
-
Nope, nothing new. Most nights driving home, I find myself glancing out and imagining him out there somewhere. Closure would be nice but it's a luxury that we don't always get. Did he freeze to death? Is he living in someone's home near or far? Did coyotes get him? Guess I will find out one day. Hoot is an uncle though, his brother Waylon sired some cute little pups 4 weeks ago today. Thanks for your thoughts
