Title: I need advice on a coyote hunting gun
Post by: nutntoit on December 01, 2015, 03:23:31 PM
I appologize if this is posted in the wrong section. I have started doing some coyote hunting and am not sure which of my guns would be best. My two options are as follows. An ar-15 that is set up with a 16in stainless 223wylde barrel, free float forend, cmc 3.5 lb trigger, and a vortex spitfire 1x prism scope.
Option 2 is a Savage 111 in 30-06 with a bushnell 3-9x40 scope.
I don't want to take this scope off to put it on the ar and I can't afford a new scope (college). Which rifle would you pick and why?

I doubt a yote would know the difference. I say carry what you are most comfortable with. They will both get the job done.  :twocents:

I'd use the rifle with the scope. No doubt about it.

I would take the Ar15 over the 30.06 on a yote.  If you shoot a nice one with a coat you want to rug out or mount....

Guess I'll be the only one nice to the college kid. Use the .223 (even if it means putting a cheap scope on it) and sell the coyotes to Cascade Biological Supply (George Brady) in Pateros...pays for the days hunting if you get a couple of coyotes. You won't be able to sell them if you use the 30-06.

Barret 50 cal

Personally I have found that rifle platform chambered in 30mm works best for most small game.

I know some guys that prefer 12 gauges cause the yotes get in so close. Depending on your calling setup either gun could be more suited than the other.

I would use the .223.  Maybe check local pawn shops for a cheap scope?  I'll have to check but I might have a scope in the cabinet that I'd let go pretty cheap.

I was hunting last night with a Ruger American in .223 and had a coyote run over the top of me and almost took off with my decoy and I never even got a fricken shot off 😂😂. I'm taking a shotgun along next time for sure.

So I went out with my 223 and quickly realized I need some magnification or at least a good pair of binos. My 30-06 shoots just over 1 MOA off shooting sticks, so for now that's what I will bring. I would like to keep the fur as there are some really nice coyotes where I hunt. So the search begins for a reasonably priced and decent scope for my 223. I want to maintain my ability to shoot closer targets so I was thinking maybe a 2-7? I would love a 1-8 but can't afford any of them. Or the other option is get another decent 3-9 and use that until I can afford a bolt gun to put on.

A 2x7 makes a great coyote hunting scope , even more so if your calling coyotes.  I love calling coyotes and the closer the better,  Most of my coyote guns wear 1.5-6x40mm scopes and stay at 1.5x most of the time unless I get one hung up out a ways.  On a coyote hunting scope I like to see at least a 40' FOV on the bottom end, it helps on the close ones, tracking a moving coyote through the brush(you can spot a clearing ahead of the coyote and still keep the scope on him) and it is faster to pick up one moving.  Don't overlook a 1-4x20mm, huge field of view and out to 300 yards is a chip shot for a 4x, I have all my combination guns(rifle/shotgun) set up with 1x4's and am very comfortable out to 300 yards with the rifle calibers in 5.6x50R Mag, 5.6x52R and 6.5x58R and on 1x is perfect for the shotgun barrels

The Burris FF-II is a great calling scope plus it has a the Ballistic-plex reticle which would be handy if your shooting heavies out of that 16" barrel.  The Weaver Classic V 2x7 has really decent glass, both of these can be found in the $150. range..  If you can find one in your price range the Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40mm works well, I have one on an open country 22-250.

I'm not  a big fan of bino's on a coyote stand,  all the movement raising and lowering them is a lot of movement to try and conceal. Coyotes are big enough that they can be seen at a pretty long distance, usually farther than I'm willing to take a crack at them over a set of sticks,I set a a limit of 300 yards for myself, too easy to miss and that makes them that much harder to call in the next time.  Many times I've let a long one pass and came back the next day and killed it at short range with a different sound or set up.

Thanks for the advice this is exactly what I was looking for.
