Title: Eastern Washington pheasant hunting report
Post by: Alex4200 on December 02, 2015, 04:13:39 PM: Today conditions were perfect. A couple inches of fresh powder for tracking. No wind. Cool enough to not over heat the dogs but warm enough I had to shed a coat after an hour of walking. Roads weren't too bad with the fresh snow for the trip to and from the hunting grounds. Tracked several birds in the snow. Only saw one rooster that flushed at least a hundred yards out. Saw two hens, one flushed right next to me. Katy the wonder dog tracked a bird for several hundred yards through the sagebrush. I tried jogging to keep up with her. Never did get a look at it. Got into a covey of quail. Brought two home.

I got out today too and it sure was beautiful. I love to hunt fresh snow. I saw more pheasant tracks than birds. Kind of eye opening how many birds I never see but are there or were just there recently.

With some quail, Huns and a grouse in the freezer, I feel fortunate and shock of shock, bird hunting never has been about limits with me anyway. Alone with my Springer in the beauty of the snow covered Palouse satisfies my needs. Anything put in the game bag is a bonus.

I love to see the pictures and don't mind when people are brief, just something struck me about this report and I liked it.

Also, there isn't always much activity in the upland forum so sometimes I like to make sure somebody who makes the effort to post gets some response.

Maybe I shouldn't have complimented him?

The morning was a little frustrating with lots of birds flying wild but the afternoon it settled down and the birds held really well. The dog did very well today working with the wind in his face....man its nice to watch dogs work birds..

BIG bummer of the day...my pup took a face full of porcupine quills near the end of the day. On the hike back with a face full of quills she was still able to point two more times, one being the last rooster of the day. Nice day, bad ending :(

Then started snowing sideways so hard to see when hunting against the wind... BUT as always nice to get away from the pavement of the city and watch the dog worked, he pointed a few hens the roosters were getting up to far out...

Do yourself and your dog a favor and carry a multi tool or some hemostats so you can do a quill extraction in the field. I haven't had a situation yet where I couldn't get all of the quills out myself. Your dog will feel better and so will your wallet.

Post by: merkelman on December 20, 2015, 06:49:06 PM: My vet mentioned that the quills pose no threat other than some discomfort. But, that if one gets under the skin you should get it removed depending on the size and location.

Post by: GoBeavs85 on December 20, 2015, 07:53:58 PM: Took her to the vet immediately when the one quill broke off under the skin. I was worried about infection and the quill working its way deeper and into a bad spot. It's right on the end of her snout, just barely below her nostrils.

Unfortunately the Vet sedated her, cut her open a little, and COULDN'T get the quill out. She said it would do more damage than good to keep cutting and digging. So she left it in there and said its in an OK location and should work itself out eventually. Seems odd to me. It is just a little piece of the quill but I'm still uneasy. She is on an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory to help fight of infection and pain. She seems to be her normal self tonight after recovering from the anesthesia from yesterday. We'll keep a close eye on her and keep out of field for awhile.

The snow makes them hold rather than run, run, run…Also, the snow aids in locating birds via their tracks.

Yes, always better in the snow.

Post by: Labs07 on December 28, 2015, 08:08:17 AM: I hunted birds on the 25th and 27th of Dec. Boy the snow sure has helped the birds hold in better. It was cold both days I hunted and the wind was pretty calm. The birds have been in the bushes along the streams I hunt and are concentrated there. On Xmas day I filled my limit by 1100 and on the 27th we got two. I love watching the dog work the birds...he certainly was a laser both days.

GoBeaves should not be so humble he shot most of the birds of the day pluse he bagged a coyote and porcupine. Not bad for a mix bag!! Looking forward to getting out the week, it snowed a little yesterday and it is staying cold. Hoping the birds hold good. Good luck to any others chasing birds this week!!!!

Post by: Labs07 on January 11, 2016, 01:07:41 PM: Well the bird season is in the books for me! Went out yesterday....what a difference a week makes. The snow had a nice little cover of ice on top which made walking a real chore in 8 in of snow. Dogs feet faired pretty well but still had some bleeding around the nails. The birds were not holding all that well but we did get two of those birds that did hold. They were still holding tight in the trees but getting up on them was difficult with the snow the way it was. The wind was slight but good enough for the dog to work the birds. Have a great rest of the season all!
