After years of chasing deer I've finally downed my first buck. It's not anything special, first thing I've killed with a compound bow, so it's a day I'll not likely forget. I knew someone would ask for the story couldn't keep my eyes open any longer last night. So here it is, I got invited to hunt on a friends property they don't hunt and have a coyote problem so I just had to shoot any coyotes I saw which ended up being zero they seemed to dissappear the first day of the hunt. The first day I got on a doe and stalked her to about 20 yds could get a shot she kept her vitals behind a tree every time she stopped. Decided to take a day off to let it calm down there and not pressure the deer out of the area. So I went back out Wednesday morning there is usually little to no activity until around noon there so we stood around the coffee pot yakin until 10 and decided to sit in an old tree house. After about a half hour I was getting antsy and the land owners son spotted a deer 100 yds up wind of the stand. So I decided spot and stalk sound better. Climbed down and hiked up the hill and got on a buck, ranged him to 23 yds and took a shot. Missed clean it ran off and I tried to find the arrow. Couldn't see where it went and I knew my lumenok activated so I was pretty frustrated. We backed out for a couple hours grabbed lunch and we're planning to search for the arrow again before sitting the stand again. We ran into the same buck didn't get a shot opportunity my bow was strapped to my pack still. Still haven't found the arrow the lumenok was the only thing I recovered battery was mangled, but I know I hit something and deflected no clue where so I let go to my mind back in the game. So we backed out again and decided to wait for last light thinking they would come in still. 4 pm hits and back up the hill we hiked the same buck I'd seen all day was back again, stalked up on him as he was walking off. He stopped next to another buck so close daylight could not be seen between them. The buck I was stalking was facing away and the one on his left was facing straight on. I got a range at 44 yds and set my pin to 40 and made a couple steps in. Settled my pin on his throat and let it rip. He dropped in his tracks.

Congratulations! you can only get your first one once, It's not all about the size, it's also about the journey and the respect for the animal that is harvested.

Great Job!!!!....First one is the finest trophy you will get

You should never purposefully take a frontal throat shot with a bow, sorry to be that guy but it needs to be said. If you missed a 23 yrd shot.. a 40 yrd throat shot is not a good call. I hope in the future you do not attempt it again. .. you will not enjoy the result 99% of the time.
