Title: bobcat traps, what size box trap are you using?
Post by: TeacherMan on January 22, 2009, 10:49:02 PM
I have close to 1500 jaw style traps from back in the day when I use to trap muskrats to beaver to bobcat and everything else in between. I only have a couple box traps that I used on coon in the city when my dad was a control agent. I would say they are 14x14x36. A cat could fit in one if he tried. What traps have you used that have worked on bobcat? Where are you getting them and how much. Thanks...  ;)

The guys having success are using traps that are much taller, like in the 16-18 inch tall range, width is not nearly as important for cats as the height is.

The traps I am using are 12x18x37 I have caught a cat in that size. I also have some that are 16x16x40 i haven't caught any in that size yet. The traps I have I built on www.trapperman.com there's a guy that goes by yancy that sells the right size. The width doesn't really matter but you want the height at least 18.

I have 3 of Yancy's traps.  From inside to outside they are (W x H x L)8"x17"x36" , 10"x18"x36" , 12"x19"x36".  I also like the fact that they slide inside each other.  Take multiple traps in the the same area.  Strap them on a pack board and stash our stuff inside the traps and go.

Those are sweet.  How much do they cost?  Does anyone have plans to build cage traps?

They should start really movinng here pretty soon. Did you ever get a swim through trap yet?

Teacherman,
The ones I use are the Hava-hart Model 1081's. They are 15x15x42 you can pick them up at sportsmans wharehouse for around 65.00. I would stop in at Pacific Hide and Fur if you are in Spokane and check with Roger he might have some, he is usually a couple of bucks cheaper.

I forgot all about Yancy.  I quit trapping when I moved to California quite a few years ago.  If I remember correctly he was in Nor Cal wasnt he.

I really like that 12x19x36 you could get a nice size cat in that trap

This is the site I've been looking at for traps. $150 - $170 a pop is kind of steep for me. If need be I will start to reset up like that.

Yancy sent me an email a couple weeks ago.  He wants $440 for four of them shipped to your door.  They all nest inside each other like Michelle_Nelson posted.  Good looking traps, and they apparently work.  He has some pics on Predator Masters in the trapping section.

I made my own last week, it's sort of big 24X18X48.  The only thing I've got so far is the dog that was getting into my son's dog's food. At least I know it works.  Didn't cost much to put together.

I paid $290 for these 3.  I havn't really caught anything.  Havn't really had the time.

Never got a swim through trap either.  I PMed the guy on TMan a while back and he responded and said he would have pic's and info later and never got back to me.  I didn't push the issue since I probably won't do any real trapping until this coming season.

Not sure I am goin to buy any more traps.  To darn expensive.  BTKR and I are talking about building our own over the summer.  Maybe 40 or so depends on how froggy we feel once we get started building traps, lol.  I guess BTKR has had a couple cats come up to the door or walk right by his traps but they wouldn't commit.  I think he needs taller traps but he had to work with what he could get on short notice.
