I have seen where some of you guys talk about and show pics of bench leg bucks. I have never heard any body say anything about bench leg bucks before i came to this site! So whats a bench leg? :dunno:
-
Mule Deer / Blacktail cross.
-
Mule Deer / Blacktail cross.
:yeah:
Basically most of the deer in Klickitat and western Yakima counties are benchlegs.
-
it's very rare to find a "purebred" or even mostly purebred muley west of Yakima anymore. Check out the tail...dead give away, so to speak.
-
In the Washington state record books, they are called Cascade Blacktails. Boone and Crocket does not recognize them and cannot be entered in their book. It's too bad too, there are some whopper benchlegs out there.
-
Seen two of them in the Methow, which is new for me.

Looks like the whitetails and blacktails are gona take over the Muley areas. :'(
-
I shot a 3x3 Blacktail/Mulie cross this year and I have heard of them in the past also called "Pacific Deer". This was my first cross Buck as I usually hunt in pretty much Blacktail areas.........Les
-
I don't think a benchleg will ever score that high in the muley record books, but I think they are the coolest looking deer there are.
-
i saw one this year that most definitely would without a problem. He was a monster. The huge ones are few and far between but they do exist.

How big do you think he was?
-
You've seen my big one haven't you 270.
-
i am being very conservative here but an easy 190+. I have never seen a buck this big before. I almost had a heart attack. He stood up 10 yards from me. Oct. 31 2008. that day will haunt me the rest of my life. His forks were at least a foot long or better and he was a heavy, wide, black antlered 28 inches wide and very tall.

I don't think so.

ya i am still doing that :yike: I see him everynight I try to close my eyes
-
Well mine ain't nearly that big :yike:
-
you can bet that I will going hard for him this next year. Although chances are slim since this area is very thick and hard to hunt but I will give her hell. Lets see your bench bone. I have heard you talk about it before but I have not seen a pic yet.
-
Ya would love to see a pic if you have one bone. I really like the mass on red dawg's buck too.
-
I'll try to find it. Hes on here.

-
Nice buck bone what is he 170 class? Love that cape he's got. ;)
-
wow that is a real nice buck bone. I have seen a few that are about that size. I have not seen one like that with the cheaters though. Double eyeguards look familiar. Is that a general buck. We have shot about 4 bucks about his size maybe not quite as wide though. we seem to get into the old regressed massive bucks that tend to stay at te 20'' mark.
-
Shot him in the general (rifle) with my bow.
-
whoooo even better. To bad that the heards arent doing so great these days, they will come back.
-
Not so bad around our neck of the woods. I've seen nicer bucks down here lately than I have elsewhere in the state. Most don't measure up,but I like big ole bucks with mass, and thats what these big benchlegs like yours have.
-
ya they are my fave. They do get some of the coolest racks around. I have seen quite a few whopper 3 points. I like the ones that have that red color to the antlers. We hunted true mulies for the first time this year in Idaho and after that I prefer my bench bucks even though they typically dont get as big.
-
I saw more deer this year west of yakima than I have ever seen. Granted I have only been deer hunting for 4 years. Saw one big buck but he was in the oak trees and was gone before I got a good look at him. :bash:
-
Great buck Bone. I dig that cape with the double throat patch too. You do some of your own taxidermy, don't you?
-
heres a good example of a bench leg buck
-
Nice buck henry. 8)
-
Nice buck Henry. Yes Pathfinder I do it all
-
ya good buck
-
Nice Benchleg Henry!
Bone, I do a little taxidermy too. Lots of birds and small game when I was in high school and college. A few years ago I started doing big game a bit. It was, shall we say, a learning process. I made plenty of mistakes on my first one, crooked mouth, ears in the wrong position, etc... I call him Ape-Deer. Second buck was a little better, still a bit bug eyed and the ears aren't quite right... Neanderthall-Deer. Third buck's eyes are a little deep set, ears kind of shaggy,...Cromagnon-Deer. Last one I did looks almost like something you would hang on your wall without having to quickly explain "I am learning taxidermy"... I call him Modern-Deer.
So my game room currently looks like one of those evolutionary charts in a science classroom with the monkey turning into the man.
I need to build a bar in my basement so I can move all the f$#@ed up ones down there were no one will see them sober...
-
Nice buck Pathfinder...beauty cape on him.
-
Not mine Coastal... if you are talking about the head mount, that's Boneaddict's.
-
Meant Hunter Henry....my apologies.
-
:chuckle: Yep....sounds familiar Path
-
Nice bench bucks guys!
-
Here’s a klickitat bench legger.
-
Dang Boss! That's a great buck. I had a small basket whitetail in one of the harvest threads years ago and some called a it a whitetail/mule cross.
I've seen a bunch of what I thought were true black tails around the Gold Creek Station a few years ago.
-
Here’s a klickitat bench legger.
Yeah I've noticed those older age class benchlegs will throw a bunch of points without much length. Thats a beauty!
-
Is this a Benchleg buck?
-
Is this a Benchleg buck?
Depends on location really.
-
Better picture of just the antlers.
-
About 15 miles down the north side of Blewett pass.
-
Yes. If it's got a black strip down the tail, it's got some degree of blacktail in it. :twocents:
-
Amazing! I've looked at these pictures of that buck a hundred times. I've never once, looked at the tail.
-
Yes. If it's got a black strip down the tail, it's got some degree of blacktail in it. :twocents:
That and his location , plus lots of mass, not a typical wide rack of a mule deer for his age class.
-
Better picture of just the antlers.
Whatever he is, he's a masher!!!!
-
Is this a Benchleg buck?
100% bench leg. This is also a bench leg
-
The old thread comes back to life. Here’s a Bench leg buck, short wide black tail. Shot near the pct. Goes 154
-
THis is a benchleg.

-
Bone if that is benchtail(which I believe you) that's essentially the holy grail right there.
-
Amen to that and if he survives until next year, has CRAZY potential, especially for mass. (younger buck)

Got any tail picks, plus what’s the general area?
-
I have an ass shot of him on here somewhere. I cant see pics on my work firewall. Probably in the FB thread. I took 2000 photos of him so I am sure I have one. East slope of cascades where there are Benchlegs, especially wintertime.
-
Here’s his arse
