Title: Whats a bench leg buck?
Post by: bowhunterforever on January 23, 2009, 12:48:56 AM: I have seen where some of you guys talk about and show pics of bench leg bucks. I have never heard any body say anything about bench leg bucks before i came to this site! So whats a bench leg? :dunno:

Basically most of the deer in Klickitat and western Yakima counties are benchlegs.

Post by: norsepeak on January 23, 2009, 06:56:03 PM: it's very rare to find a "purebred" or even mostly purebred muley west of Yakima anymore. Check out the tail...dead give away, so to speak.

He stood up 10 yards from me. Oct. 31 2008. that day will haunt me the rest of my life. His forks were at least a foot long or better and he was a heavy, wide, black antlered 28 inches wide and very tall.

Double eyeguards look familiar. Is that a general buck. We have shot about 4 bucks about his size maybe not quite as wide though. we seem to get into the old regressed massive bucks that tend to stay at te 20'' mark.

I like the ones that have that red color to the antlers. We hunted true mulies for the first time this year in Idaho and after that I prefer my bench bucks even though they typically dont get as big.

Bone, I do a little taxidermy too. Lots of birds and small game when I was in high school and college. A few years ago I started doing big game a bit. It was, shall we say, a learning process. I made plenty of mistakes on my first one, crooked mouth, ears in the wrong position, etc... I call him Ape-Deer. Second buck was a little better, still a bit bug eyed and the ears aren't quite right... Neanderthall-Deer. Third buck's eyes are a little deep set, ears kind of shaggy,...Cromagnon-Deer. Last one I did looks almost like something you would hang on your wall without having to quickly explain "I am learning taxidermy"... I call him Modern-Deer.
So my game room currently looks like one of those evolutionary charts in a science classroom with the monkey turning into the man.
I need to build a bar in my basement so I can move all the f$#@ed up ones down there were no one will see them sober...

I've seen a bunch of what I thought were true black tails around the Gold Creek Station a few years ago.
