Title: looks like I'm getting a muzzle loader!
Post by: E-Town Hunter on January 23, 2009, 09:14:30 AM
Well, with the proposed changes that would open up smoke pole hunting near the areas I live looks like I need a muzzleloader :IBCOOL:. Any recommendations on what type. Looking to stay under $300.

I'm thinking the same thing. I've been looking at the Knight bighorn. I runs about $330.00 to $350.00 depending on the model. Stainless, camo, etc, etc.

I'm gonna wait till the regs come out though.

I guess I'm old school. I prefer the sidelocks, I have a .54 cal Lyman Trade rifle. I would reccomend the .54 as it has enough power for deer and elk. >50 will do the job but the extra energy from the larger bullet is much better IMO

I'd look for a good used TC Black Diamond XR Stainless. Should find one for what your looking to pay. I like mine. I also have a CVA Elkhorn Magnum I like as well. Neither gun is made new anymore. Not many companies make a WA friendly Muzz. Might have to look used.

I have a Thompson Center.  I would wait until the regs come out though before I bought one.  RIght now the restrictions on what kind of muzzeloader you can use in this state are very restrictive (more restrictive than any other state that I am aware of).  FOr that reason, a LOT of the "good" muzzeloaders in production are not legal for hunting here (because we do not allow covered ignition systems).  I would wait until the regs come out and see if they relax those rules before buying anything.  THey probably won't, but I would wait and see.

Some companies are coming out with "western" versions of inlines. There was one at sportsmans warehouse that was a new model although I can't remember the make. CVA maybe. There's a few to choose from and i'm sure there will be more. I believe SW had 4 washington leagal ML's last time I was there. I like the sidelock ones myself but gonna go inline if I do in fact buy one.

The great thing for me is I have all the weapons already (ML 2 of them, Rifles (many) , and Bows) so I'll wait until the official regs come outbefore I decide.

im looking to buy a muzzleloader because i can hunt with all weapons on a general tag here in idaho, and we have stricter rules than washington but now they are making a lot of inlines that are legal, theyre even making break actions that are legal now they just cut out around the nipple so its exposed

Well I will be waiting for the regs to come out before I purchase one, but I have always wanted to try it, just haven't had any hunts available near where I live for muzzy hunting. If the proposed changes take affect I will be happy to try a different method. As far as the crowds....it can't be worse than rifle hunts where I go. On top of that all my GMU's would be available for all 3 weapons general season hunts with the multi season tag.

I have a Knight in line that is nice but I love my Lyman Hunter. It is a traditional 50 caliber cap rifle with a fast twist barrel. I can shoot ballistic tip sabots if I want and I have a set trigger and the feel and steady hold of a traditional ML rifle. I think it is the best of both worlds. I bought it from cabelas for about $400 bucks. I put a fine front sight and rear peep sight on it and it out shoots my in line.

You got that right. Modern season is getting rediculous. It couldn't be worse than that. If they give more time in 139 I think I'll switch to ML. The Yahoo's down there are getting out of hand.

Winchester X-150 in .45. It's just a fancy CVA but I love mine in .50  Paid $250 at Sportsmans Warehouse on sale 3 years ago. Think I might buy it in the .45 now.

With the economy what it is and retailers having problems getting lines of credit to stock stores, expect fewer muzzleloaders on the shelf. I asked about special orders at my local sports shop and I was told they can't do that anymore. Also, layaway is no longer an option.

Have you had any problems with the ignition system not firing and taking multiple strikes on the caps to fire?

My cousin bought this gun last fall. Ever since the first time he took it out he's had problems. I guess tradition's know's about the problem and will fix it. Apperantly (sp) the hammer was designed for the 209 ignition. All they did to make it legal in wa was to cut the whole in the top and change the ignition. Since the hammer was designed for the 209 it doesn't hit the musket caps right. My cousin missed an opertunity (sp) at a really big doe, broadside at 30 yrds, on the last day of the season because his gun didn't go off.
