Finally got a few traps out on Saturday I only got 3 out but in good areas up high in deep snow (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F27%2F893521fd9ab3c5873d681c500bad9726.jpg&hash=8dd89cfdfa8683a90f8acc180ee01b94172ae354)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F27%2F99e41b322533ab372ae123d67c035cfc.jpg&hash=daf5183b28982f97aed7a0b57d6bc94dd789363c)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F27%2Fed21f8cead65640573b7e37f6a227d72.jpg&hash=f882b202b07c1291c09d8f299fcc72d1c6366d6e)(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F27%2F69bd170ba22bbe7978e3579083e6ca36.jpg&hash=aea3271270f30e0301d4cb3bc0073a13818d7a98)

Got a late start and had to check them by headlamp and snowshoes a nice female and she broke the triggers so I pulled this trap to fix (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F28%2F8d66b123218ae828748bc2050a54c81a.jpg&hash=c0b1e5ef590c1cdd047f7d3e14301330f9a96a8a)

And of course the truck pic (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F12%2F28%2Fed9ac5b7f5b90a9ab03600f0ee49f1e7.jpg&hash=45449a03848ba4e5ad6ee4a5b8c99a5be6db1500)

.22 short either right through the ears or if they won't cooperate I will go between the eyes and get it to go down their neck so there's no exit hole the .22 shorts I get are the low velocity I think 720 fps

Ended getting off work late and didn't get up there until way after dark had some things come up this week and wouldn't be able to check them plus nothing hitting the cages except weasels they are just stripping the bait from me so I pulled them and I'll start a new drainage in a different area on Friday

  Good luck everyone!

What have you seen about bobcats being forced down to lower areas by deep snow?  Will they just hunker down where they are for a few days if there is a big dump and wait for the snow to get hard so they can travel or are you catching them as they come down because the snow is too deep above?
Title: Re: Jakelands 2015/16 cat line
Post by: JakeLand on January 01, 2016, 10:12:57 AM
It's all based on food . I've. Caught cats way up high in 4' + snow they will stay in their core area they just get easier to catch as the winter gets longer they will concentrate in thicker more dense terrain where there's less snow on the ground and more rabbits and rodents I stay up high all year

I have some CBEE .22 LR 740 fps if you want them next time you come.

I bought them for something that didn't work out.

One of my other cages had cat tracks all around it and it was dumping snow !!!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160112/196287136ae03540fd49ea2097f5d34a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160112/6adfcc30fa050ccd96967900bbd35a6a.jpg)

Title: Re: Jakelands 2015/16 cat line

Big chunk of beaver and some castor ( from said beaver ) above the cage  a little eye attractor like a wing or something that flutters in the breeze even a CD  if you look close in a pic you'll see a plastic grocery bag that had the bait in it hanging from a limb above just shred it and let it do its work

NO! But I've caught a couple in this drainage already and her coloring wasn't the best she was really orange and not a lot of spotting so I figure I would rather let her go and breed and keep me trapping in the future in that area it might not make sense to some but it does me . When I start marten trapping next month all females are released no matter what same thought on them too

When I don't have beaver meat duck carcass is my 2nd choice, I'll agree that fish doesn't work.

Well first is just looking at the cat you can tell if they're older they are just bigger and beefier when it's a tom.You can just tell this cat was a female she was tricky and she was not happy so it's kinda of a cat and mouse game picking up the cage and getting them to back up against the cage with their tail in a position to see if there is some berries or not

I've never used duck I tried grouse that I had boned out the breasts and used the scraps but I always go to the beaver meat it's got a strong smell and nice and bloody

Don't get me wrong I MISS conventional traps but I think cages have there place too ! I got buddies that water trap and they get a lot of animals and they will get several rats in one trap . But setting cages for cats takes a little longer and the right spot where with foot holds or snares I can cover a lot of area and not have to have a perfect spot but it's fun and addicting

ya I know my toilet paper trick usually works but only if they come in on the same path ( after you walk in 50 feet put a couple wads of toilet paper right so it looks like that's all you were doing and they won't go past it)
Kinda surprised because it snowed enough where my tracks were gone . I think the dog found it first .
I guess this is part of trapping now days or I guess just life that you gotta lock everything up so it doesn't walk away

I've had several stolen, I even had one stolen that had a cat in it. I had one area that had  4 traps in it maybe 2 or 3 miles apart and any where from 20 ft to 100 yds off the road. Found them all in the middle of the main road standing on end . A dog found them for his owner I'm guessing

Anyone try to lock their traps down?  I was thinking a couple earth anchors would reduce the chances of a box trap from walking off.

There was a guy in one of my areas who I suspect was/is illegally hunting cats with one or two dogs.  I've seen him and his dogs.  The dogs are hounds on the big size and have the typical orange collars with the brass tags riveted to them.  I'm pretty sure his dogs find my cages and bark 'treed' or something and he throws my cages around to vent his frustration.  I see the footprints and found one of my cages UPHILL from the set.  Somebody got one of my cats out of a cage on my property a while ago. The cage was about 150 yards down a steep finger from the road.  So I know he didn't see it from the road.
