Title: Best Straps for New Binos
Post by: jstone on December 31, 2015, 08:04:46 AM
Ok i bought a new pair of 15 power Vortex Binos. I am looking for a good carry system. On my other Binos i use the Crooked River Straps but they are getting streatched out. I want something that will cover them and NOT get in the way of me shooting my bow. So nothing to bulky. What do you prefer? I was looking at the Tenzing yesterday but before i spend the money i want good ideas. ALSO where can i get an adapter for my spotting scope tripod for the Binos? Thanks

I used the the badlands for years it looks really big but it was never an issue shooting my bow... Would probably work well for your needs as you could store your adapter in it as well.  I switched to the kuiu this year it's really nice and compact.  The biggest size kuiu makes should fit those 15's but would be a pain taking off and on to use on spotter. You can get a bino tripod adapter from vortex for $20. Congrats on the glass 15's would be nice to have

S4 Gear by far. I've got the Badlands and it's too bulky with other equipment and a pack on. I also have the crooked horn but the elastic straps stretched out too fast.

I've used the S4 Gear lockdown the last few years and like them.  I especially like that there is no pull by the straps when you are glassing.   I've seen them on Camofire several times the last few weeks for $35.

I've tried several different binocular carrying systems and, over the years, the best two that I've come up with are the S4 Lockdown System (I've noticed no difference in comfort between the old single strap down the back and the newer "X-style") and the FHF Gear Binocular carrying system. I now own both.

I have a pair of binoculars that I saved long and hard for (they nearly caused my wife apoplexy when she found out what they cost) and I don't want them damaged when I'm out falling or dropping things - which, for me, is a daily part of hunting. What I've found is that, if it's going to be a clear day, the S4 is the rig I use. It's tough, easy to use, comfortable, not bulky, and reasonably priced. It does not, however, completely enclose your binos. Still, they do the job and do it well.

If it's windy (and, hence, dusty), raining, or snowing, I use the FHF system which completely encloses your binos. Again, tough, comfortable, easy to use, not as bulky as others out there, but a bit more expensive (here, remember how much you spent on your binos and just go ahead with your purchase). Note: I'm a bit of a gear addict, so you'd probably only need one of the above systems

As in all things, opinions are like your backside - everyone has one and some of them stink. Other responders will probably point you to other systems and you'll have to decide on your own as to what works best for you and your budget. This will be my 39th year hunting (and trying to find the perfect gear) and these are the two best systems that I've found that can stand up to what I put them through and still work for me.

Hope this helps a bit.

Larry S.

PS...The owner of FHF Gear is a great guy to talk with. It's still a small company and he knows what he's about. Give him a call if need be.

Kuiu or FHF. I use the Kuiu. I used the s4 before. I like the total containment of the Kuiu. Never had a problem with rain getting on my lens. It's quick and easy one hand operation.

The biggest size kuiu makes should fit those 15's but would be a pain taking off and on to use on spotter.

It takes literally two seconds to unclip the bino's from the harness?

Yep it sure does.  probably would be a nonissue but just wouldn't be my first choice for a bino system primarily used on a tripod, being that the binocs themselves are part of the suspension system. It would piss me off to have a strap fall behind my jacket and have to strip a layer to get it back together before I moved.

Alaska guide creations or FHF

After lots of hesitation I went with the AGC and won't be looking back any time soon
With that said I can't help but wonder what it would be like shooting my bow with a pair of 15's in a case strapped to my chest would be like. I'm afraid they'd be huge.

Agreed.  If I ever had 15's they would be going from my pack to my tripod and that's it though.  Too much glass to be riding on the chest for me.

I love the FHF harness, the quality and fit is great. I like that you can add on extra pouches for a GPS etc as well.

I use an Alaska Guide Creations with a set of Swarovski EL 12x50. Its the best chest pack I have ever used. I also keep my phone, gps and range finder in the other pouches. I have the basement model in a Large.

If have both the fhf and agc, both work great but I prefer the fhf, I also have the range finder attachment from fhf and they are a good fit together.

I use three Badlands for my smaller binoculars, but the magnetic one will not fit our 15x56 SLC.  The Kuiu large does.  I like them all just fine, but it looks like others have real world experience with options that may be superior.  What I like about the Badlands is that I can throw the binocular in the back of a Polaris ranger in the summer and I don't have any problem with dust getting in.  They are also pretty well rain proof on the west side.   I clip my range finder on the right strap and so far it has given no problem by getting in the way of shooting my compound or crossbow.

I have had many.  I am now with S4 right now with EL's.   They are the best I have had and they are super quiet.  I can open it up, use the binos with one hand and put them back and restrap it.

You asked about huge sized bino's.   The S4 are not your solution.  Those are huge and should be in a pack with a tripod attachment.

I guess I'm behind the times- I'm still using my Crooked Horn harness that I've had for twenty years.

Until recently I really had no idea there was anything better.

One of the best upgrades I ever did was throwing away my Crooked Horn harness and buying a FHF harness.

I just use the strap that came with my Swarovski EL Binoculars. Works great. When walking they are tucked inside my shirt like I have done for almost 50 years.

I had the Crooked Horn but gout tired of constant readjusting. I went with the Kuiu's and am quite satisfied with them. Like the fact I can go with or without the case.

Agree.  After a little research just ordered kuiu today.  And the price is excellent however I would have paid whatever as I am confident its exactly what will do me.

For me 15's will go from pack to tripod & 10's go for a chest ride  :twocents:

Me too.  That is pretty much the same for me.  I do every once in a while want to take the 15x56 with though, and when I do I like my binocular on my chest.
