Title: Tikka Win. 300 Mag
Post by: TLEVIN40 on January 05, 2016, 09:45:22 AM
Been hunting a few years on and off, was passed down a rifle from my grandpa that is old military rifle converted to 30.06 hunting rifle. the scope on it is cracked and water gets in it and fogs it up. When I have had good opportunities to shoot, haven't had the best of luck.  All that being said I have asked around to a few friends and they recommended Tikka. Any advice? Best place to buy a new gun? I have a Cabelas CC but seems over priced by about $100 compared to other places I have looked on the internet.
Thanks

Is there a Sportsmans Warehouse close to Everett? If so you might try that.

Be aware the Tikka is a light rifle and in a 300 Win Mag recoil may not be pleasant.

You may want to shoot a Tikka first, before you buy, and see if you like it.

Thanks guys, yeah I have shot one once before, wasn't to bad. Appreciate all the advice. Worth looking into a muzzle break?
Scope wise I am looking into Vortex Scope, 4X12 possibly 4X16. Any suggestions?

You don't need a brake in less you plan on melting the barrel  down . I'd grab the wsm and not look back .

:yeah: Way nicer shooting than my .300WM with a brake.  :chuckle:

Andy is a great guy.
I bought all 3 of my Tikkas from him.
300WSM is a good cartridge.
I have a Limbsaver pad on mine but you WILL know when you touch one off.
Big recoil but not punishing.
Never get a brake.

I've dealt with East County Guns a few times, but I'm not sure I'd make the drive from Everett.  :dunno:

www.gungenie.com they beat everybody. The take care of all the taxes, shipping, no transfer fee. Just give them a down payment and your gun shipped to the dealer of your choice and pay the rest to the dealer, paperwork and your done. I use them alot.

Why would you say never get a break? All of my 300 wsm's have brakes and I would never go back because I could shoot them all day long and its like shooting my 243. For my money, the brakes on my rifles are worth every cent I have paid for them.  :twocents:

:yeah: I have a Tikka t3 lite stainless chambered in .300 win mag.  I use it as my "go to" elk rifle.  I would definitely advise putting a Limbsaver pad on as well as replacing the factory rings with something sturdier.  The recoil when shooting Tikka in .300 win mag is manageable but it isn't pleasant.  I do think it's a great set up for an elk rifle (carry it up and down mountains for a week and shoot it once).  Just my  thoughts....

 :yeah:

I also have a tikka 300 win and absolutely love it.  One of the best things that I did was to replace to factory stock with a bell & carlson.  The recoil is much least and it's a pleasure to shoot.  The factory recoil pad sucks.  :twocents:

A muzzle brake is a great idea as long as you're willing to wear ear plugs while hunting. I'm not.
? for that "one shot"?

I agree with range shooting but come on...
One shot from a muzzle braked gun can easily cause permanent hearing damage.

http://www.asha.org/public/hearing/Recreational-Firearm-Noise-Exposure/

Exposure to noise greater than 140 dB can permanently damage hearing. Almost all firearms create noise that is over the 140-dB level. A small .22-caliber rifle can produce noise around 140 dB, while big-bore rifles and pistols can produce sound over 175 dB. Firing guns in a place where sounds can reverberate, or bounce off walls and other structures, can make noises louder and increase the risk of hearing loss. Also, adding muzzle brakes or other modifications can make the firearm louder. People who do not wear hearing protection while shooting can suffer a severe hearing loss with as little as one shot, if the conditions are right. Audiologists see this often, especially during hunting season when hunters and bystanders may be exposed to rapid fire from big-bore rifles, shotguns, or pistols.

I have a t3 super lite in 300wm and it's definitely manageable. I also concur with the addition of the limbsaver. #10011

I'd also save a few bucks and drop a new trigger in when you get it.  I've shot 5 different Tikka rifles and every one of them had garbage triggers.

So this basically supports wearing hearing protection whenever shooting any firearms, even when hunting.  I always use hearing protection on the range and usually try to wear my game ears when hunting. Regardless, I still wouldn't trade my rifles with brakes for any of your guys guns without brakes. :twocents:

I understand.
I have two ragged rotator cuffs and I still wouldn't trade my hearing for less recoil.

To each their own I guess. Most dont wear hearing protection when hunting thus making the argument moot. I have had muzzlebrakes on my rifles for over 15 years and have no hearing loss issues. I have to get tested at work yearly and I am within the upper end of the range for my age, so I will stick with works me.

I've got a tikka 300wsm, tikka 7mm- 08 and a Sako 300wsm all in stainless and would never buy anything but stainless. All great guns - take it outta the box and put a limb saver pad on it before even thinking about shooting it. The factory pads on all of those are joke!
