Title: Best $415 rangefinder ever!
Post by: high country on January 08, 2016, 11:23:26 AM
I just unboxed the sig kilo. I purchased it from savinglots which cost me $414.00 to my door and it was about a week to get here. I pulled it out and stepped outside. I can see a snow pile down the way that is barely visible due to the fog. I click and POW 459 yards...instantly. My leica does not like snow, and it does not like fog. this thing did it instantly. I will be hoping the weather will allow a break and see what the top end is. Many are claiming over 3k yard pings and given the speed of return at 460 yds.....I am hoping it will get close to that.

I have a bushnell conex on the way too, but this thing is small and powerful. worth checking out and a shameless plug for the site I bought it from....I was a bit nervous as the price was 25% below the avg street price....my googlefu showed good standing with the BBB so I risked it. Glad I did!

Bob, I just pinged a stop sign @ 412 yds through the windshield in the fog.

780 on a truck is as far as I can see. If it doesn't have a target, the fog is returning 29-31 yds. Uber impressed.

anxious to hear more about it, can't wait to get one in my hands.

It sounds encouraging. I'm a Leica fan and have ranged large, highly reflective objects over 2K with it but it doesn't do well in fog and rain. I think one of the more important tests is how far it can range game animals under varying conditions.

Every thread I read makes me want to pull the trigger even more. Here is a great thread where a lot of testing has been done with one
http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f18/sig-sauer-kilo-2000-rangefinder-161599/

Only downside I have read, is that the waterproof rating leads one to believe it cannot be submersed. Not like you are ranging underwater, but good to know in case you are in an area where dropping it into a creek is a potential issue.

Thanks for the review, I have a Vortex and it let me down the last two hunts.  Now, I can't seem to range anything over about 30 yards, including houses and cars.  I'll be giving them a call, but not overly impressed with the one I have.

When it cleared off tonight it was quick to ping 2257 yards on a building. I was able to get hits on snow in the sun at 850yds instantly. I'm super impressed.

When I saw your thread title I guessed it would be the Sig Kilo you were talking about. My brother just got one and I've only used it a little, but was very surprised/impressed. Scanning with the rangefinder was very impressive as well, very quick changes and readouts. It picked up the one-mile target first try. I'm jealous I didn't get one for Christmas!

I picked one up a few weeks ago. You wont find a better one for the money. I prefer it over the Leica and its not even close how much better it is than the Vortex and the Leupold. Super fast one tap and scanning is immediate

It has a red LED and works amazing in dark or bright, adjusts automatically

It adjusts for angle from 5 yards out.

I think this is the game changer in range finders. there will be better ones coming soon, but I doubt that you'll find one for the money. the performance vs size is mind numbing.

I've now done a first round of testing, comparing the Sig Kilo 2000 to a Leica 1600 under a variety of conditions. Further testing will be done.

The primary advantage of the Leica is slightly better optics. To me, they are clearer, sharper, and brighter. If I had to carry only one optic being a rangefinder and no binoculars the Leica would have the edge.

Accuracy is virtually identical to the Leica. I was ranging objects in the 1500 yard range, and the differences were within a couple yards.

Ranging distance: the Sig is better. I could easily range reflective objects in the 2300-2500 yard range with the Sig. I've had readings with the Leica in the 1800-2000 yard range, but they're rare.

Speed: the Sig is clearly superior, providing instant readings when the button is depressed and it updates very quickly.

Reading the display: I have no problem with either.  The digits in the Sig are slightly larger and appear to be a bit brighter. There is a brightness setting; I used "auto".

Readings in weather: this was the primary reason I was interested in the Sig. The Sig is better. I was able to range objects in fog further than the Leica, every time. I was also in snow and the Sig ranges better in snow.

There is a caveat: I was testing the Sig in "Best"mode, which provides a reading of the strongest returned signal. There is a "Last" setting, which returns the distance to the further object it receives a returned signal from. I wasn't aware of that setting when I tested this weekend. I quickly tested the "Last" setting this morning in woods behind my house. On "Best" the distance came back as 18 yards: the distance to the closest branch. On "Last" I got 52 yards: the distance through the brush and branches to the house beyond the woods.

In my snow testing with the unit set to "Best" I would get readings that toggled between +/-30 yards and +/-300 yards: 30 to the snow flakes, and 300 to the distant object. I suspect if I had set the rangefinder to "Last" mode in the fog and snow it would outperform the Leica by a greater degree because it would ignore the closer readings off the moisture.

Size and weight: comparable.

I am speculating, but my guess is that the Leica is programmed more conservatively. If it does not receive a strong signal from a certain distance, it won't provide a reading. It errs on the side of caution. It may also be that Leica deliberately limits distant readings by modifying the program to accept certain distances. I truly believe that the 800, 900, 1200, and 1600 had virtually identical components, but were programmed with limitations as "planned obsolescence" to prod people to buy the newer products as they came out. When the Leica 2000 comes out, we'll see.  :chuckle:

Settings: I tested in "AMR" mode: "Angle Modification Range". This is the horizontal distance to an object. There is a "LOS" setting which provides the actual Line Of Sight distance. I'm a rifle hunter so the advantage of using angle modified readings is of little value to me, but why not use it.

Conclusion: the Leica has slightly better optics, but not enough better to justify it over the Sig. I have not found any other advantage to the Leica. The Sig clearly outperforms the Leica in ranging capabilities.  For $415, it's a steal.

Update. I've done a bit more testing, and the results continue to please me.

Distance: it is routine to get readings in the 2000 - 2200 yard range. Tonight I got a reading of 2682 off trees on Squak Mountain. I ranged a jet over Seattle yesterday at around 2250, and a ferry on Puget Sound at 2300. The jet and the ferry were done in the rain. That part alone is a real big improvement over the Leicas I've used which have difficulty in weather conditions.

Angle compensation: I stood an arm's length away from a multi story building and took a reading off the highest floor. The reading was 1.5 yards which is correct since it measures horizontal distance in AMR (Angle Modified Range) mode.

The displays adjusts nicely to ambient light conditions and is easy to read in both dim and bright light.

I've yet to find anything I don't like about it.

Yes. The optics aren't as good as a Leica but good enough for me to see what I am ranging.

How did you find it worked in low light?  Some range finders gather a lot more light than others.
Ya can't range something if ya cant see it.

I don't have a definitive answer to that, other than to say I believe the image is as bright as I could see without optics: no more, no less. The exit pupil is approximately 3.5 mm.

I did a bit more testing of light gathering ability this evening. Nothing scientific, but I can confirm that the image in the rangefinder is brighter than the image with a naked eye. If you can see it with a naked eye, you can definitely see it better with the rangefinder.

I like most Vortex products but think you made the right call.  Vortex had buttons I didn't like and the light gathering was fair to poor in the one I looked at.

Having owned and used both, my Leica still beats the Sig hands down. Better optics, better display read out, more accurate laser. I couldnt get the Sig to range a 6" steel target at 438 yards even mounted to my tripod. The laser in it isnt accurate enough on small targets. It kept reading the backdrop at 532 yards. I put my Leica 1600-B on the tripod and it ranged the steel 6 times in a row at 438 yards. If you look through both, you'll notice the aiming circle on the Sig is much bigger than the square of the Leica. It might perform fine on large objects (trees, big rocks, etc), but I wouldnt want to rely on it for small targets at any decent distance.

Yes, its $250 cheaper than the Leica. So everyone looking for "value" will like it. If you're expecting a lot out of your rangefinder, I might consider trying a different one.

I feel quite differently about my Leica that I just sold. Did it range accurately most of the time? Yes it it did,  under near perfect conditions.  The HUGE downfall to the Leica in my opinion is that the Leica will not operate in freezing conditions.  Mine failed me on a moose hunt this year in Alberta. Unless it is next to your body, inside your jacket, it will not operate under roughly 35*. I was not happy and looked it up when I got home and it states that in the manual but,  says 32* is the threshold.  Personally for myself, what good is a top of the line rangefinder that won't work in freezing temps? Don't we hunt in sub freezing temps frequently?   I decided then and there it was going down the road.  Does it have great glass? Yes.  Does it work good most all of the time, Yes. But, having animals in front of me with no idea of the range in big country really soured my opinion of my Leica. My hunting partner ranged my moose with his 399.00 Leupold that day because mine failed at twice the price.  :twocents:

That's interesting. My experience with both had been entirely opposite. The Sig is my preferred rangefinder while the Leica is the backup. My choice has nothing to do with "value".

2492 yards off my front porch with my KILO 2000.

I can range trees, through my levelors, in an instant. No searching around at all.. The close stuff is instant and when you're panning, it's reading all the various yardages with no problem.

My one time range at 2492 only happened once. Mine seems to be having trouble out past 1000 yards. It ranges everything fast when panning at 20 - 7-800yards. It will not range trees at any long distance as claimed.

Is anybody else having trouble with long range distances over 1000 yards ?

I have to agree with this to a point. The Sig seems like the Vortex PST of rangefinders in that it offers a ton of features, great performance and a good value in nice package. I haven't played with the Sig rangefinder that much, just for a few hours, but I thought it was an excellent product at that price point. However, I wasn't able to get consistent, accurate and repeatable ranges on small targets at extended ranges. I was able to get good hits on larger targets like tree lines, dirt banks and hillsides or a solitary object like a single power pole against the skyline. Where the Sig failed and the Leica beat it is ranging a single rock on a hillside, a specific tree in a stand of timber, or a gong hanging in front of a back drop. The Leica did it better but at a significantly higher cost. That doesn't take anything away from the fact that the Sig rangefinder is going to dominate anything in it's price bracket.

I think this is similar to the comparing the Leica/Swaro rangefinders to the Vectronix line since the relative price points are similar. The Leica and Swaro rangefinders are very good and give accurate and consistent ranges well beyond what most of the less expensive units can do. Plus they typically do it with more consistency and precision (in my experience) than the other units. When I sit down and range side by side with a Leica and my Terrapin, the Leica performs well, but still comes up short on smaller targets at longer ranges. Likewise, my Terrapin gets smoked at extended range next to a pair of Vectronix Vector 21s.

Today I ranged some targets at known and measured distances with the Kilo, at 1000 yds it was within 1 yd , at 300 yds, about 0.6 yds.  To give it a bit of realism I put out a Rinehart 3D deer target at the above ranges to check distances.  I would guess the 3D target may be a bit more reflective than an actual deer, but this target is not new and has been outside most of the year.
I also did some ranging at dawn, on a cloudy day.  The Kilo gave me a clearer object than I could see with the naked eye on targets in the shadows and ranged effectively to 100 yds  It was still dark enough that I couldn't see much beyond 100 yds.  Had fog about a week ago and it surpassed my expectations in that condition as well.  My old range finder would not function at all in the fog.  Very pleased with the Kilo thus far.
Time will tell how well it holds up in the long run.

As far as warranties go, the best ones are the ones you never have to use.  If a lot of folks are bragging up a companies warranty and how good said company took care of their issues, it indicates to me that their products may have some problems.

I use it more for planning a stalk or marking a waypoint on my GPS. If that animal is 1800 yards away, and that ridge is 1500 then when I get there I will be 300 yards away. I'll mark the 1500 yard ridge on my GPS, and now I can get there going blind.

Well mine is in the mail and I'm stoked to check it out - if it's always consistent to 1000yrds I'm happy! Pretty sure none of us are shooting deer at 2000-3000 yrds! :dunno:

mine pings 1k yards so fast you wonder if it is a joke.

Got my sig kilo today. First impression was good. Stepped out the front and pinged the neighbors house at 1825 instantly. Tree line at 1110 was instant as well. Pinged my 733 yard plate(10" x10") which is back in side the trees a bit also instantly.  Quite impressed so far

I found it for 388$ but hesitant to pull the trigger with the mixed thoughts on it, I own a 1600b

It's nice that the Kilo gives you a number out at 3000+ yds the question is, is the number accurate.
I know mine is accurate to 1000 yds because I ranged to a known and measured distance.  But I have not attemped farther.
While I like the unit, I would be hesitant to be confident in it's measurement at 2 or 3 times that distance without first testing against a actual measured distance.

To each his own.

I believe the Manuel says +/-5 after 1000 yards. I'll double check it when I get home

My range finder doesn't range perfectly at 4823 yards.  It was off by 42.037 feet!!  What a piece of junk!!
Does anyone know if their warranty is a good one?   :hello:

Got one of these the other day.  I ranged once at 2352 in low light.

My interest was in a rangefinder that would be lights out to 1000ish yards and I got it.  Seriously, I aim and tap the button and in half a second it's reading 1248.7 yards  :yike:

Just grabbed one of these off a snipershide vendor. Charged me $420 shipped for it and was wondering why he was cheaper but he delivered in a brand new unopened box for me. This was the farthest I could range from my job site in Bellevue. Pinged it real quick. Now just to see how far I can get it to range and match it to my shooting dope. Pretty impressive for the little package it came in. Only negative I have heard for the price is battery life. I guess they should've planned to put two of the batteries instead of one.

Anyone checked the accuracy at short distances? Is this a unit that will work well for archery and rifle hunting?

Yes it is great at short distance. I am currently experiencing an issue...the display is very blurry. Not the optic but the reading. I will keep you all informed of the fix.

Try playing with the diopter focus adjustment at the base of the eyepiece. Check out your manual page 3 for a picture. Hope it fixes your problem.

I figured it was that but it isn't. I will have it perfect one second and the next time i pick it up it is just a faint red glow.
