Title: 2016 Spring Bear
Post by: X-Force on January 11, 2016, 12:10:23 PM
Its time to apply... but you already know that. Just wondering with the doubling of NE corner permits if more people are switching to those units?

If I could escape work during the spring I would be putting in for huckleberry or 49 degrees just to do a double Turkey/Bear hunt.

went NE and west last year going only west this year

I normally put in for the Blues, even though Sasquatch ate all the Bears after he decimated the Elk population, but my wife is pregnant with our second child and her due date is May 10th, so I will probably just do points this year.

You should add a choice, "I always go to Idaho, no draw and always a spring season".  :)

While that is completely accurate, it doesn't tell the whole story.  Yes, at least in the Panhandle, you can be assured of OTC spring bear (fall bear, too) tags.  And, they are cheap for foreigners like me.  However, because baiting is allowed in Idaho, a drop in hunter like me is at a real disadvantage, in my opinion.  At least in Washington everybody is the same (no baiting).

On the other hand, there just doesn't seem to be much interest amongst 90%+ of Idaho hunters for bears.

Do you agree??

Actually not at all.  There are TONS of bears to be had without baiting in Idaho.  Lots of areas too difficult to bait in and perfect for spot and stalk, if you are physically able.  Some areas get very little pressure.  Idaho has a healthy number of bear hunters, baiting, hounds and just general hunters.

I'm surprised no one has switched to NE corner with a couple hundred more permits. If I don't draw Washington I'm thinking about Idaho this year. Planned a trip last year that fell through.

I will put in for NE corner because it is where I hunt bear, and I feel it is one of the best black bear areas in Washington State.

I drew 49d last year, got two gobblers on opening day and hunted bear the rest of the week. It was a sweet week in the woods.

X-force, nice new pic in your avatar...where was I in it?! You know where I put in. Best of luck to all others. I would love to do a eastern wa hunt for bear for a week or so, but close to home just makes it too easy.

Mmm, spring bear!! Man I wish I could draw this tag ever year, so damn fun!  With only one point this year, I'm screwed.

:yeah:

I changed my mind as I was applying and only applied for North Skagit for the same reason. I would love to do a week of spring Bear and a week of Deer in the NE but that is just not in the cards. Three points this time so "maybe" a chance. Plus I could still buy a second tag for east if I got lucky on the west.

Don't give up man, I only have one point to, but it ya never known. The only time I ever put in for a cow elk tag in Yakima I drew with no points! I also harvested a huge cow on that trip, and was the only one in camp to get an elk that season! :IBCOOL:

How do you build points? I've been thinking of applying for a spring tag for the west side. Snohomish or skagit counties

You build points every year you buy one. Start off with one point, then the next year you put it you'll have two. They square whatever number of points you have for the drawing. 2=4, 3=9, 4=16. This way the longer you put in it works to your advantage. Personally I would rather not have a point system and everyone who puts in has same odds.

If you have kids who hunt I would start putting in for them now! I think it's only 3 dollars for youth.  Then by the time they are 20 they will be drawing moose hunts and everything else.

Just got word that they cancelled the whole thing.  No spring bear in Washington this year,  :sry:

Don't even bother applying, just a waste of money IMHO

Baiting is not allowed in all units in idaho.  Unit 1 for example you can not bait.  I suggest you just hit idaho, and dont bother putting in for washington
