When is the best time to look for sheds?

I went today looking for blacktail. I say the sooner the better because if your the first one through you get the shed.  I was going in last year middle of April and this guy was coming out with a nice 6pt bull shed. He had found 10 already by that time and I had just started. Not this year!

Or just run up on your sled and chase the deer/elk around in their wintering range like some clowns do and throw a picture on the forum bragging about your shed.

My pile is big enough I guess.  I just like to give them a break.  I'm watching a huge set of elk antlers from a tribal kill they didn't get. (They shot him in the ass and he died a week later).  I'm waiting to see how long it will take for someone to break the law and go get them.  Lol.

May 1st @ 0600. This year's going to be another bad year for idiots chasing the elk around in the closed areas before they open.

Ah,I remember the good old days when no one cared about sheds. Guy could spend all day in the hills above Eburg and not see a single person. Load up on sheds, whack a few coyotes for beer money and make it back to the Tav in time for happy hour.

Well its not like the good days when you could sit back and watch the deer or a heard of bulls and wait till the all had dropped. Your best bet would be to find some deer or elk and keep watching them till you see that that are starting to drop could be any time from mid November- April for deer and as early as mid march-end or april first cpl weeks of May for elk. Then i would say go in and start looking but always give then distance dont spook them if u can. If i am in the woods early i always treat it as i was hunting the animal keep wind in my favor and advoid chasing them out of the country :twocents:  good luck

I'm an afternoon guy myself. No need to wake up early and I've been marooned in the dark enough times to know better than getting too late a start.  :chuckle:

The best answer is any :chuckle:. Depends on where and what your looking for IMO. For migratory animals, especially elk timing is everything. As they will be easy to spot and picked over quickly especially in the open country. If you have a honey hole its best to wait as late as possible to avoid spooking animals before they shed. In thick cover I go anytime I can, preferably as early as possible while vegetation is at its  lowest point.

I really hate that law. Its a shame that even the rack on an elk or deer must be left to rot.

I guess I understand it, but it sure sucks, and the bottom line is somebody who doesn't care about the law benefits from it, whereas those that follow it.....

Exactly!  I have found so many wolf kills etc... in Idaho.  I found an absolutely huge Moose way back in while elk hunting this fall in Washington.  Probably was killed in July, and this was September, but I had to leave it there.   :bash:  Just another example of Washington creating retarded rules that only hurt the law abiding Sportsmen!
