Unless it passes in every state this will make it cheaper to buy online from a state without the tax :yike:
-
Does it say anything about transporting ammo across state line?

THANK YOU

Just talk to a heavy smoker. When they go to Idaho to get a few cartons of cigarettes, give them some money to get you a case of 5.56. Problem solved.

Might as well pick up a jug too.

The problem will be for people who are reloaders- primers and powder are already too expensive to buy online due to the additional haz mat fees charged. So that stuff I always buy locally.
But how much would the actual tax be according to the way this bill is written? I don't know. If it's a nickel per container of powder, that's nothing. But what would it be for primers? A nickel for each primer? :yike:
Or a nickel per box of 100?
-
I followed up and sent in a letter and received responses that my reps weren't going to vote for it. That's just 2 but keep sending them in until we get the biggest % on board. They just keep trying to screw us, don't they?
-
ya that sucks. If its not per container/box this can really be horrible
-
I sent my comment in:
This bill is an attack on gun owners - plain and simple.
The very first line is sophomoric at best - of course we have to have guns to have gun violence. The biggest link with gun violence has been proven time and again - areas that maintain a stricter gun control tend to experience a higher volume of gun violence. It's not the average gun owner who is at fault for creating gun violence, it is the legislation that makes it more difficult for the average gun owner to defend himself from thugs.
Punishing law abiding citizens because they happen to have a different hobby or lifestyle than your own is against everything that we as Americans stand for.

I understand what you're saying about components. I've moved away from store bought bullets for the most part and cast my own. For the reloader that buys everything in the state of Washington (I think they might be able to still tax Internet Sales on this to) it'd be pretty painful. They would tax you 3 times (4 if you need brass) every time you restocked your powder, primers, and bullets. It's a stupid bill and just a money grab on a group that's easy to target with this states politics.
-
Can the tribes sell ammo without this tax (and a few others)? I'm thinking they can.
-
I let em have it in my comments too that I emailed.
For shame on these people.
-
So would this be only for retail?
Adding 5 cents per round per sale could make this expensive.
If this was to pass, I would never buy another round in this state again.
-
Thank god they cant tax you for what you already have.

Pretty sure that is the goal.

A primer or bullet is not a round.
"There is levied and collected a fee upon the retail sale of all ammunition in an amount equal to five cents per round of ammunition. The fee imposed under this section must be paid by the buyer."

I agree but someone posted that the bill also includes reloading components.
-
As used in this section, "ammunition" means cartridge cases, primers, bullets, or propellant powder designed for use in any firearm.

Ooops. You're right. I just saw that. Thanks for the correction.

Look on the bright side at least I'm not discriminating against you because of your gender, race, creed or religion. Just the fact that by looking at the numbers, along with your geographical location, you and/or your neighbors will vote for these sort of Hillary 2016'esq sort of bills. I know we will lose a few good people but I'm willing to sacrifice you guys.

The reply I received from Ed Orcutt
My estimate of the impact of this bill is that if twelve billion rounds are sold in the US annually and we estimate that Washington is approximately 2% of the population, then we would expect approximately 240 million rounds to be sold in our state. At a $0.05 tax (let's call this what it really is: a tax -- not a "fee"), then we would expect it to raise $12,000,000 per year. If we divide that just by the 39 counties in our state, each would get an average of $308,000/year -- that would be enough for 3 more officers in each county (assuming $100,000 in pay, benefits, etc per officer). If we divide that among the 39 counties AND 281 cities and towns, it would average $37,500/ municipality -- that may be enough to enable some municipalities to hire an additional officer but only if they had enough of their own money to fund 2/3 of an officer, but not enough for most to hire an additional officer.
So, that is what it would raise -- assuming that customers in areas adjacent to Oregon or Idaho would still buy ammunition in Washington rather than crossing to another state to purchase it, but, I expect many would cross the border to buy (they cross to avoid sales tax, liquor tax, cigarette tax, gas tax, etc. so it is reasonable to expect they would cross to avoid this tax as well).
But, is this a fair tax? I suggest not. Even with the burden put on law enforcement by those who use guns irresponsibly, we do not need law enforcement to regulate those who use guns and ammunition responsibly. Furthermore, there are a huge number of crimes committed or police calls made that are unrelated to guns which would not be taxed. So, this appears to be a tax that unfairly singles out a certain sector of our society.
Furthermore, if law enforcement is so important (which it is) then it should be funded from existing revenue -- not be reliant on a new tax. I believe that we must prioritize our current revenue and provide services within existing revenues. And, I certainly oppose infringement on our 2nd amendment rights by targeting ammunition to pay for law enforcement to respond to all types of calls -- even those where no gun has been used.
I will not be supporting this bill and will work to defeat it.
