Go with a Moultrie D40. Under $100, simple, and worth every penny for what you're doing. If you want to spend a bit more and increase the quality of your rig and photos, see the Homebrew Trailcam thread. For around $150 you can build a very nice set up that will compete with any commercial unit. Lots of guys can help you out, but there's a ton of info already posted.

I would go for the hamemade one if I were you. My friend and I bought some lesser expensive (wildview) and lots of misfires and shots of nothing. The homebrew one I am building is actually easy to do and much more exciting to know you did it yourself.
